It can be funny or sad. Calm or action packed.

Story? Well there's sometimes serious arcs and less serious arcs but when there's a serious arc I guarantee you, It shall be epic. Though some times serious arcs can have parodies or references from other stuff.
When it's not an arc it's sort of like a filler type episodes or sometimes just one epic episode.
The Main characters don;t get a power-up moments, in fact they don't have special skills.

I got thoroughly disinterested after the first episode too and ceased watching for a few years... until my friend showed me the beginning of the Benizakura blah blah movie intro and I realised how retardedly GENIUS it is. Gintama is definitely for the mature crowd. At the end of the day, everyone is human and imperfect. This often leads to a moral dilemma in which neither side is right or wrong (and believe me, there's a lot to be learned even within some of the most ridiculous episodes). Overall, there is no anime that quite captures the human experience like Gintama. But then, what would children know about that? This isn't Bleach or Naruto, where people constantly fight for a long forgotten purpose and power

@Menegoth There is something that almost about everyone can appreciate about Gintama. One may not love it to a large extent but I somehow think its quite impossible to truly hate it. I think what he was trying to say was probably that compared to other animes, this never fails to carry a good plot and even the draggy parts are intentionally hilarious - thus deserving better appreciation and in my opinion, much more recognition.

To all who gave up on this anime after watching the first episode, I IMPLORE you to continue. You won't be disappointed. I got thoroughly disinterested after the first episode too and ceased watching for a few years... until my friend showed me the beginning of the Benizakura blah blah movie intro and I realised how retardedly GENIUS it is. And it does not have annoying girl characters - how much more can you ask for?

if anyone wants to get a start of watch Gintama，you need to remember rather than watch it from start you should watch it randomly and you'll found it's more funnier when you watch it that way because Gintama only have very small links between each eps。

@Dwish305 it continues from the original so dont worry, the reason why it took a one year break was it caught up with the manga so sorachi senpai wanted to make a one year break which was really smart and now gintama is back with more humour :)

Gintama is definitely for the mature crowd. At the end of the day, everyone is human and imperfect. This often leads to a moral dilemma in which neither side is right or wrong (and believe me, there's a lot to be learned even within some of the most ridiculous episodes). Overall, there is no anime that quite captures the human experience like Gintama. But then, what would children know about that? This isn't Bleach or Naruto, where people constantly fight for a long forgotten purpose and power

gintama is one of the best animes ever .i m a bigggg fan of naruto ,bleach and fairy tail too.....but gintama is diffrent because i never get bored WATCHING GINTAMA ...whenever gintama gets serious its more awesome than any other anime..and when its funny like usuall its tooo much fun to watche .....its a master piece and the LOSSERS who r bad mouthing gintama go to mothers and cry there why r showing of your stupidity here

@ljuc if u r talking about gintama 2011 you wont understand a thing from the first episode and if not the GINTAMA's real serious ark starts in the benijakura arc in the 2nd season and there r many good serious episodes in the 1st season too.....who the hell says a anime is not special after watching 1 episode ......GIVE IT SOME TIME dude it has over 200 episdoes

@Menegoth There is something that almost about everyone can appreciate about Gintama. One may not love it to a large extent but I somehow think its quite impossible to truly hate it. I think what he was trying to say was probably that compared to other animes, this never fails to carry a good plot and even the draggy parts are intentionally hilarious - thus deserving better appreciation and in my opinion, much more recognition.
