oh my! they are so cute... God's little miracle... a truly wonderful creature that needs to be loved and protected... :) thumbs up for these kind hearted volunteers... :) keep it up... :)
Because we don't know how loud sounds would affect the hatching. We try to minimize the impact of the humans (spectators and volunteers) who are present on the hatchlings.
I really have no idea what that noise was. It wasn't the turtles, that's for sure. It sounds like it might have been someone getting up from a beach chair nearby. We were all trying very hard to be quiet.
I truly hope those that are priviledged or blessed enough to witness such an inspirational and moving example of nature, understands just how blessed and priviledged they really are.
Yes. Occasionally there are stragglers which is why we excavate the nests 3 days after it hatches. We also collect data on the number of hatche and unhatched eggs.
No. Since these are a species protected by the US Federal Govt., it is illegal for any individual to be in the possession of a sea turtle, dead or alive, or its parts.
Mother Nature told them! They instinctively go to to light reflecting off the water. Street lights, porch lights, etc. can confuse them and cause them to crawl into the dunes or elsewhere where they would probably be eaten by predators or die due to exposure.

It has been estimated that one hatchling in between 2000 and 5000 make it to reproductive age (apx. 20 years ?).

Are you asking how long the nest was there before it hatched? Nests generally hatch 55 to 65 days after they are laid at Carolina Beach.

I wanna go see this for real one day. This is amazing, its sad that only a few out of these 130 sea turtles survive in the wild.

Excavate means to very carefully dig up.
ndorow 2 years ago
So they just all happen to hatch at the very same time? Aren't any of them late hatchers?
kiwipink08 2 years ago
Yes. Occasionally there are stragglers which is why we excavate the nests 3 days after it hatches. We also collect data on the number of hatche and unhatched eggs.
ndorow 2 years ago
umm... I don't know what excavate means?

is it legal somewhere to have a sea turtle as a pet? like in a huge aquarium in your house or something?
ripxmyxjeansxx 2 years ago
No. Since these are a species protected by the US Federal Govt., it is illegal for any individual to be in the possession of a sea turtle, dead or alive, or its parts.

Unfortunately, that would be difficult to see at night with an infared camera. My infared light is limited in range and field to about 6-8 feet.
