Camera is very useful, but the Mac software is a waste of disk space. Veho acknowledged that there is a problem, over a year ago, saying that they would soon fix it.
No; they haven't, and any attempts to contact them result in an 'I'm on holiday message.
Photo Booth works, up to a point; only one preview size available.
Does anyone know of any other software which will work with this microscope?
When the screen is blank, there is broken (cut off) cable in the USB cable-white cable. Usually this happens near the USB connector. Check with a multimeter and repair. You can also add an new USB cable!
I wonder if those complaining about low magnification like me did not find the high magnification setting. To illustrate this, take off the cap and place tightly down on e.g. print. It should focus at about "30x". Then turn the wheel almost all the way to about "400x" and you will see the image come into focus again (this time you have to adjust very carefully or you'll overshoot). Looks pretty good - you can easily the ink dots in the character.
hi can someone help, my microcapture software doesnt let me go into preferences, when i click it nothing happens, i need to go in and change the size of the video capture please help :(
I can't get it to work on 10.6, I just get a black screen. Still looking for a solution, but for the time being I am taking pictures by using Photo Booth, and choosing the microscope from the 'Camera' menu.
I have the same problem but the good news is that Photo Booth drives the microscope. It may perhaps have extra features in the original software, and Photo Booth reverses the image. But I have successfully taken photos and video using Photo Booth.
It *does* appear to be a fairly low-magnfication webcam. But fun anyway for the kids for whom it was bought. And me.
Did as suggested with the download files, plugged the microscope in, opened MicroCapture and just get a black screen. Any suggestions gratefully received.
Hi Andy, i have the vms-101, when i set it up to my comp it worked perfectly but now the screen is blank!? have you any idea how this is and what i could do to get it working again? everyhting seems t be fine but im just not getting any picture!?!?!??
The latest Microcapture from the Veho site launches fine on 10.5.7 here - do you get any errors in the console? If you can't get it to work on the PC either, it sounds like there's a bit of an issue :-( you say 400x, do you mean the VMS-001 or another model?
Not sure... sounds like there's a problem with the device node being created in OS X... but I'm not sure and there isn't enough information in that message for me to be able to work out what the device file should be. Did you contact Veho already?
I was REALLY thinking about getting one, but I kinda need the last info on it :)
Is it possible to get clean and clear shots when at 200x ?
What I mean is that I would find it boring if it was just an expensive webcam-like thing i bought which gets completely blurred at 200x (which is where the fun really begins when you examine things).
No not found any drivers for vista 64 so far. Veho UK don't respond to support emails either which is not helpful. Pritty piss poor on the support side.:(
I've had a long chat with Veho and it turns out that they have had some serious problems with their site and have lost some support emails - they haven't deliberately been ignoring customers. It might be worth trying again when the site comes back up.
I would try using some other webcam software first to confirm that there's no issue with reading from the camera in general (I sent you some links to some free / free-to-test examples) - but you could move to Leopard if you like.
I have now got OS X 10.5, and the camera started up straight away, so you were 100% correct - my 9 yr old has just spent the last hour examining various bits of his body! brilliant, thanks so much, and happy new year.
Goodness there's a whole new sub-world opening up to me, my log says; and I cut and paste here, dyld: Symbol not found: _IKImageBrowserQTMoviePathRepresentationType Referenced from: /Library/Frameworks/EWSMac.framework/Versions/A/MicroCapture.app/Contents/MacOS/MicroCapture Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Versions/A/Quartz this is after it has crashed a number of times
I note that I do have this 'A' file deep in the library. You are very helpful, many thanks again
Well first thing to say here is that I'm no expert, even if I sound like one at the moment!
I did a quick search and it looks like IKImageBrowserQTMoviePathRepresentationType is only available in OS X 10.5 and upwards. So it could be that the Microcapture application is not compatible with 10.4.11 - the screenshots in the PDF are certainly all from a Leopard machine. Annoyingly I cannot see anything which makes this clear on their website or in the documentation :-(
Many thanks for your quick reply! - yes it does show up in the hardware - same as yours - (thanks for the instructions where to look!) - I have contacted veho, but I think they must be closed for Christmas - I'll keep trying to launch it, many thanks again, keep up the good work!
Hmm, weird huh. I think they might be closed, yeah, I contacted them last week about my suggestions for improvements to the software and haven't heard back yet.
One other thing that might help you track it down - go to Applications -> Utilities -> Console and search for "micro" in your log files. There might be some clue in any messages that are being reported. Apart from that I'd be stumped, sorry :-/
Hi Andy, Many thanks for your very useful clip. I have bought this camera for my 9 yr old but can not get it to launch. I unpack it as instructed, and the microcapture icon appears, the camera is plugged in, and the sonix part is in the quicktime folder in the library. The icon appears for a couple of flashes in the toolbar but that's it. I am using an Imac G5, with OS 10.4.11, where am I going wrong? -
Hi, not sure what could be going on there. I'm using an Intel Mac, but it does look like the Microcapture software is a Universal binary, so it should work. Does the camera show up in the computer's Hardware (Apple icon -> About this Mac -> More info... -> Hardware -> USB) - on mine it shows as USB20 Camera. I guess you might need to contact Veho for support :-/
Hi Michael. I used ScreenFlow for the middle section of the video with the screen + iSight capture. It's an awesome tool. I also recommend iGlasses for adjusting the iSight properties.
Thank you

so i got the 400x version. First of all the mini DV obviously doesnt fit into an Imac, and then secondly, after downloading the drivers it wont work.
halp?

@stickhrk
You need to go in the "Options" to select the window size for pictures and videos.

Andy, I have got the mini cd with drivers and the application "MICROCAPTURE", it is simply great!
I am going to post a small video in a short time.

@thelegendsaretrue cool! was that with the driver on the CD, or did you have to download anything from the Veho website?

I have just got my new veho discovery 200x and it works nicely and smoothly under Mac Os x Snow Leopard!

does it work with MacOs 10.6 (Snow Leopard)?
Thanks, great review

btw mine is the 400x version.

No, I don't think it will work in Snow Leopard as the software is PPC and SL is Intel only (I think). It's annoying.

Anyway andypiperuk, thanks for this great review, it was very helpful.

PC or Mac? what version? have you installed any other software recently?
You should really check with Veho as I don't work for them and don't know the internals of the product :-/

The software for the 400x doesn't launch in 10.5.7 either. I didn't get it to work on my PC either. I can get an image, but no control.

Hi Andy, Thanks for your help. It's the VMS-004. It shows up in the hardware. When I try to launch, Console says "permission denied." (detail below)
Any ideas? Thanks!
Console gave me this info: Jul 15 13:46:29 MacPro2008 com.apple.launchd[130] ([0x0-0x40e40e].MicroCapture[11009]): posix_spawnp("/Applications/MicroCapture.app/Contents/MacOS/MicroCapture", ...): Permission denied

That sucks! Well you should definitely contact Veho, their site does not make it clear, it just says "Vista".

Yes, the Preferences menu option is grayed out on the Mac... There's an "Options" menu instead. Another sign that the Mac software needs some work.
