Yes, the best ever. Even the great Callas comes second to Caballe on this one. She sings it even better on the album with the great Ingvar Vixell as Scarpia. That diminuendo at the end is so difficult and she just hits it out of the park!! God bless Monserrat.
Caballe has higher and more prolonged notes than either callas or Sutherland. She puts in as much if not more emotions than the other two. She has to be the best ever followed by either callas or Sutherland.
The great Caballe. How can such an otherwise voice sweeter than honey manage, so effortlessly, to change direction to convey such pathos! Bravo and bravo again!
SOMEBODY SPANK ME AND SEND ME TO BED ALREADY!!! I continue to DROOL with desperate delight at the art of this fine, wholesome, ABUNDANT lady!!!! For out of her bosoms drip the sweet honey of the finest samarkand! Sounds that shame the rich red colour of pomegranate! VIVA, LA SUPERBA!!!! *GASP!*
I love her, but it annoys me that she will often dismiss some of the words at either high notes or end of the aria...is this to make it easier on her? I would think that of anyone, she`d be the one who would not have a need to do something like that, with that impressive breath capability and control.
the technique is not flawless and the glissandi in the opening lines (and most of the lines...) a bit over the top... but the sound is undeniably gorgeous and -what the heck- that is what we love her for...
I heard her live many times and have happily joined in the usual hysteria of applause beyond criticism.
However, keeping a clean head nonetheless never harmed anybody...
One of the most beautiful voices we heard, not always faithful to the composer of the work, but what a voice and beauty! And personality! The only other soprano giving (and better than here) the diminuendo from the B Flat, in just one breath, is Adelaida Negri, I just heard it here in youtube.
love :) i dislike the 17 dislike's but it is understandable, opera is not for some people. Thank you Montserrat Cabellefor having the most beautiful voice

Please people. Vocally way too much of a show-off to be considered a great Tosca because the key to the role and especially this aria lies in the surrender to the drama & emotion. And what the hell is up with connecting the climactic Bflat with the phrase right after? That's quite plainly ideotic. Again just to show off. Yes, she was a fabulous singer, but do not overlook her faults.
Galina Wishnevskaya the best Tosca ? ? ? ? ? Galina W. was a good Russian soprano with an awful diction and a horrible Italian pronunciation. She had no idea what singing in Italian means. The best Tosca was Maria Callas, followed by R. Tebaldi, M. Olivero and M. Caniglia.

I'm sorry, but I don't agree with Montserrat's fans. She's great, but by all means not as Tosca. Although I dislike such comparisons in comment boxes, I suggest you seek for a stunning performance by Daniela Dessi (Teatro Real, Madrid), available on YouTube.
there will be beautiful statement, one will do in vain, nothing done there, it was and will remain for a long time the most beautiful voice of all times.
One must have heard and seen several Floria Toscas to see how extraordinary this performance is. As beautiful in terms of tone as any lyric soprano, (Freni etc), as powerful as any dramatic soprano (Nilsson etc) and as passionately acted as Callas. Yet all in One Woman. Forgive her the last word, this was divine!
I like her Tosca and was surprise how good she was in it. But somewhat this Tosca`s only solo aria dissapoints me quite a lot and I consider it the weakest part of her Tosca. Strange.
you're true when you talk about this song being a disappointment. Her pitch was all over the place...don't understand it...but her acting seems really passionate.

I don't know why she should disappoint: Caballe was about producing beautiful sounds that gave the "effect" of the sentiment without necessarily pronouncing words. I've heard her go pages without pronouncing a word...
Spectacular. But I dislike it when they sing sitting (or kneeling) down.......I love the pianissimos, truly breathtaking.........the ending phrase, perche me ne rimunerei cosi" she didn't pronounce the "cosi" properly, but
OK, I take it back (Why did I have to speak too soon before I had heard it all? lol). The end where she does "Si-O!" (with an audible clunky change of vowel)instead of "Signor!", and then "co-o" instead of "cosi" is really disappointing. Oh well. I still like her anyways.
