way better than mine...i get between 14 city and 21 hwy.....jeeps suck when it comes to fuel economy....on he other hand they are very capable off-road machines
hi im 15 and am looking into jeep grand cherokees as a first car. the only thing im worried about is the MPG? im going to be driving to school and back which is about 2 miles everyday and other things life friends house, the gym, work, you know... is it a bad idea? because i dont like sedans cuz i feel small in em. i like small SUV's (: please reply!
@Stuntman69ish This 06 Jeep was my first vehicle when I was 16 and it is my baby. I love my jeep and it has not let me down. I live in Pennsylvania, and in the winter months it has done me very well in the snow. If you can find a nice used one, I would say go for it; I believe it's a good starter vehicle, and who knows, you might end up keeping it for a long time. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any more questions.
@Stuntman69ish oh yea as far as the MPG, just like with any other vehicle, it all depends how you run it. Dont accelerate too hard, cuz that burns fuel like crazy. I have about 61,000 miles on mine, and my menu MPG is at an average 17.4 MPG.
@MrRalumari I would not recommend a Jeep for the city, especially if it is stop-go traffic all the time. The constant acceleration and stop will just kill your MPG.
nice man I wish I got that with my 2010 3.7l grand cherokee. They are supposed to get 15 in the city. This is not true, unless I were to drive as slow as a grandma and accelerate very very slowly. On the highway its alright. Have not gone on a long trip with it yet so the best I have seen it is about 18.5. Are you doing something special or is it on fuel saver like the whole time?
@The415guy Not doing anything special, I just had to experiment at which speeds I would get the best mileage on, and then find a semi that was doing the same, and cruise right behind him. I have since stopped this fuel saver however, dont have the patience.
@The415guy Here is how i get 20 mpg CITY in this Jeep:
1. on mile roads, accelerate normally(don't speed) and get to normal speed limit so that you catch as many green lights as posible.
2. you see a red light ahead TAKS YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS!!!!! Coast to the red light. The jeep is equipped with whats is called deceleration fuel cutoff (DFCO) and what this does is it cuts off fuel completlly when you coast. I usually coast anywhere from 600-1300 feet depending on trafic.
3. Do not brake unless your life depends upon it (lol). Coast as much as you can before braking. Coasting gives you infinite mpg.
4. Don't tailgate. That causes unnecesarry bracking and accelerating which will destroy your mpg.
5. Try to keep a constant speed.
6. Do not keep your car idling while you wait in a parking lot. When i do that i use .2 galons/hour on my 1.6L civic...so you probablly use like half a gallon/hour with the 3.7L.
@aaabball415 yea I don't do that anymore, I do not have the pateince to stick behind a semi...plus I bought new tires and wheels, so the MPG has gone down. thanks for viewing :)
@aaabball415 depends on how you run it. I have not been this efficient on the highway anymore, don't have the patience. I also got new wheels and tires, so my MPG has dropped a bit as well.
@greeksta111 Yea so in the mud or on trails and some deeper water. Mostly stock just Cold Air Intake and magnaflow with maybe all terrain tires. How would it do?
@aaabball415 should be good.Mine is all stock (for now) I have not done anything too extreme, no deep water or deep mud, just some off road dirt trails. I have BF Goodrich All Terrain Tires on mine, and have not had any trouble.
Love the tractor trailer following! I've done the same to make it to the next Shell station in my Durango R/T. Normally I'd be hard pressed to get 16-17mpg at 60mph, but I averaged 20mpg overall with staying behind a few tractor trailers for 1/3 of my journey. I was impressed, but not something I'd do often without a CB radio.
@greeksta111 The 3.7L is rated at 20mpg highway, which really is still decent on its own without following truck trailers. At 70-72mph my 5.9L Durango R/T JUST manages 15.9mpg not towing. With the 27' TT it gets about 11mpg at 65mph. I hit 14mpg when towing once - following a transport, but it's not safe by any means.
the reason the mpg is so good is because you are driving behind a tractor trailer, it makes the aerodynamics better because there is not as much wind resistance, mythbusters made an episode about that.
@LarryDavidFreak ....yes that was my intial intent. I needed to find a tractor trailer that was going the speed I needed to go, and that it would cruise at that speed. It took a while, but I eventually found one at my speed.
when you press the STEP button on the instrument panel under the radio, you eventually come to your average MPG, when you are there, press RESET, and it resets the MPG. that is how i got my results.
the only way i got mine to get this good of economy, is because i had reset my gauge once i was at cruising speed, then it settled into its MPG. I get anywhere from 17-18 MPG overall average on mine right now.
My car does 82 MPG but different kind of vehicle i guess. I don't understand why American cars have these very old fashioned green 80's style displays, they look dreadful like an old calculator, don't you think?
yea i agree, Americans are so fused into their large vehicles, the only reason i have an SUV is in the chance i ever get into an accident, I'd like to have a chance against the larger vehicles. But 82 MPG is insane! There is no such thing as 82 MPG in the states (except on Scooters) haha
Well it sounds like a false sense of security to me, here in Europe safety standards are just as high, higher in fact than in America so even the smallest cars must be able to withstand an impact from a larger vehicle (type Smart car Vs S-Class) The American cars don't score that well here. Guess the high fuel prices and carbon based taxes have forced Euro manufactures to produce such economical cars. The emission standards here are so tight (I'm sure smoking was banned for emission reasons!)
Nice (:-) .... noticed your traction control / anti skid light was on ... one side effect of using the cruise control all of the time is that your electrical braking system computer may fail after 130,000 km. The cruise control won't work once the electrical braking system computer fails. Your ABS and Traction control / Anti-skid lights may then be on permanently until the computer is replaced ... or at least that's what they're telling me (:-(
05 Laredo ... I get 14 city at best 16 highway

This guy is doing everything right. Driving 100 ft behind a semi at 60 mph should give him about 10-15% increase in mpg.
cdog9991 8 months ago
Also, why is your traction control off? You only want to turn it off when off road.
