Not a huge fan of aftermarket sunroof, it'll never come out like the factory. Also, don't like the frame around the hole, I like the tapered look of of the factory ones.
OK, I have a question. I love cars and know a lot about performance philosophies but I am not a mechanical person. I just bought a 2011 Speed3 and want a roof put it. My question is, if it effects the structural integrity of the car, can the uni body bend and get out of shape or is it strictly a performance thing?

Mazda didn't offer a sunroof because the torsional rigidity would be compromised, but I guess the average driver wouldn't notice a difference... did you notice any difference in the stiffness of the car?
@andavid or...an experienced driver wouldn't either. There are lots of people who claim there were structural issues as to why Mazda wouldn't offer a sunroof but frankly they're all just assumptions. I still own the car, it's been through many autocross races, and I can tell you as an experienced autocross driver the sunroof presents no "torsional rigidity" issues... Car handles just fine, and 4+ years later there are still no leaks or structural issues with the car.
@jbarlocher consistently got positive comments from my dealership about my car - even with my other mods (FMIC, Sway bars, Downpipe, CAI) they loved seeing it come in. They never questioned the sunroof ironically, i expected it to be the first thing they said "wtf" about.
To everyone who says that this weakens the cars roof.....BS......I install sunroofs for a living....Factory or aftermarket, a sunroof has no impact on structural rigidity. Sheet metal does a good job of keeping you dry, and that's about it. The "braces" that are removed to install a sunroof are there to keep the sheet metal from fluttering at speed, not to protect you in ANY way. They are way to thin to provide any kind of struture. Have a sunroof installed, professionally, and enjoy it!!!
@greg12m3 ....If you cut the headers on the side of the car (the Can't rails their called) then yes, absolutely, you impact the structure of the car.....The sheet metal on top after the sunroof installation is stiffer that it was before, and there is a big "RSR" structure bonded into the car....Try it.....Run your wash mit over a speed 3 with no sunroof, and you feel the sheet metal flex under the force of your hand, with a sunroof.....You don't....
looks very nice and very clean install i will pray for you that you dont roll it or have an accident at over 15mph. as the a rollover will probly crush you and a minor accident will now tweak the body from the frame. will say it is very nice, i have an 08 an thought of this but after research dont think its the right way to go for me, i use it on the track once and a while and cant afford to loose the rigid stability the car comes with without the sunroof but im still jealous none the less
Hi I just but a 2008 mazdaspeed3 two days ago, but I don't know how to use the iPod conection it has the axs but it thoes not want to work? Or maybe I'm not doing it right could some one healp me??
I asked mazda why no speed 3 comes with a moon roof?! The dealer said that the car produces too much torque and has a high chance of making the center support weaker and possibly twisting the frame under all that torque. Good luck with the new hole.
love it ! I have an ms3 too, what an AWESOME car. I'm installing a 52 inch panoramic sunroof... Hopefully they'll do just as good of a job as with your car :) I'm also installing two tone leather. Thanks for the post !
The headliner looks OEM, go look at a reg. mazda3 and it has the same looking lines, its how a sunroos is installed, you can't install one and have it NOT take up space in the car.
Nice sunroof, the line in the roof would bug me..I'm planning on having my Mazda dealer here install one in my MS3, they said about $900 with installation so maybe since its Mazda doing it they will be able to avoid the line in the roof.
sun roof looks clean, if looks is what your looking for then sun roof is a plus...is there any high performance car with a sun roof?...well over all nice sun roof but damn the music sucks!!!
Are BMW's not high performance cars? In any case the MS3 isn't really what I consider a high performance car, it's fast for what it is, but I definitley don't consider it in factory form to be a monster.
And...it's not about looks its pure comfort, little t hings in life :)
You lost the escence of the MS3. If you wanted to go OEM it was better to replace the roof with one from an SP5 and thats would be OEM. Just my opinion. Good luck with your project.
There is a support beam that goes across the roofs sheet metal but is replaced by the sunroof frame which is prob ten times stronger thus actually adding structural integrity. If your really interested I'll send you pics of what I mean.
I dont like the rubber seal that is used around the perimeter to hide the cut metal.. What about drains? Can you say RUST?
I would also be worried about the structural problems as well. ANd I agree, want a sunroof and poo poo accessories? Go buy a regular 3. I have always had sunroofs in my cars and I use them maybe twice a year. Big whoopee
it doesnt matter how often YOU use it. wat matters is how often he uses it. i think it looks badass. structurally on the other hand i would be worried about it. but it wont rust dude thats why you use ::ding ding:: weatherstripping!!!
Actually, the hole is already in the roof. Which is why it was a cheap install. Therefore, the no sunroof option is merely a tactic by Mazda to keep the price down. Others are using the same tactic (WRX) So, there will be no structural issues.
not true at all. there is no hole "roughed in" for aftermarket sunroof. and WRX has a support brace in there that is larger than no other roof ive ever seen!! those cars should NOT be getting after market installed, i would say that support is there for a reason.
Looks nice, but in theory, that car has WAY too much torque for a hatchback AND a sunroof. I'd be concerned about progressively warping the frame due to the load put on it by that awesome engine.
I have a Webasto power sunroof on my 4x4 Ford Ranger and love it. These are great sunroofs; especially the auto close feature when you turn of the ignition.
I just wish the mazdaspeed 3 came with AWD it's really nice to have... Maybe later on Mazda will decide to make it AWD like the MS6. If the Mazda had AWD than it would be the king watch out EVO AND STI Ouch LoL
Hey listen you can spend money upgradeding all of those speed parts on the 2008 WRX to win over a Mazdaspeed 3# that's cool but all you have to do to get 300 Horse Power From A Mazdaspeed 3 0-60 = 5.4 SECONDS
Is just add a CP-E bolt on and a cold air intake you be stomping the WRX all day long trust me watch you tube video called { mazdaspeed 3 cpe stand back installed } MS3 is the best enough said.
You know, I'm gonna go ahead and have to say that if the engineers believed there was a substantial enough risk of body cracking or warping due to lack of rigidity with a sunroof installed, I'm gonna stay away from installing an aftermarket sunroof on my car.
