This song, in my opinion, is about a boy who gets a girl to fall in love with him. At first, the boy did it for the conquest, but then he fell in love with the girl by accident. Years later though, he finds himself still getting women to fall inlove with him, and they all lose their innocence to him, but he always remembers the girl he fell in love with. It's a sad song, and I think that that is why it is inappropriate for children.
@TiggleMe kids don't kno the difference. they hear the melody instead. kids r kids. and billy is the absolute best/ my fav. ever. he has integrity, talent, intelligence and depth.
@TiggleMe First you ask us to accept your pathetic understanding of the song and THEN you decide for the rest of us that the song is innappropriate for kids? Your are an idiot on so many levels! The lyrics are poetry moron. They don't have to have a literal meaning like the comic books you read. There is no secret meaning here. It's just a fun song full of nonsense. There is a lot of music like that. You dont have to explain it or understand it. You've missed the point entirely. Stifle.
I've read the lyrics to this song a few times and I don't quite get it. And you talk about it not being suitable for kids? So, I gotta ask, what is it really about?
I don't see anything wrong with letting a child listen to these lyrics, it isn't the full version and even if it was, I would still let my child listen to it, and if he was curious about the lyrics we would discuss it. As for the lobster, he is a character on CBC Kids which is where this is from. I don't see anything wrong with him "bobbing" his head to the music.
@MEBRGIRL I haven't seen any other comments on this video talking about this song being played to kids or it being wrong, but I will say this song was really popular the year my little brother was born, my mother has Mermaid Avenue on CD, and my brother has heard this song heaps of times during his life, especially when he was a tiny little toddler back in 2000, so he knows this song. I remember a few years ago my brother and I were playing around with Mum's laptop and I played this song to him
Thanks for posting this! I had to provide the link to disbelieving friends who thought I was totally makin' it up about seeing Billy Bragg on CBC kids.

Is this from the album Talking to the Taxman (about whatever it takes to pay the rent)?

@FrankChickens No, it's from the collection of Woody Guthrie songs (recorded with Wilco) called Mermaid Avenue.

Yay! Left out the part about Momma's cutting the switch from a cherry tree. Good idea, considering it's a kiddie show.

Definitely not American television... I wish we could get away with having Tom Gabel or Justin Sane on The Wiggles.
