If you notice, the melody of Viet folk music usually sounds very sad and sorrowful. This is a contrast to the Chinese music, which seems to have more cheerful melodies. I guess it's b/c the Viet country has been through so many war in its history. Generations after generations, the men went to the frontier, the women stayed behind waiting, waiting, only to find out that their loved ones would never come back. This produced a folk music melody that usually sounds very sad.
