I loved this song and played the hell out of it.. I just loved all their songs but this one was special . It's a catchy song and being 16 it was wild...Still love it today.

THE 1971 POPPY SEEDS ALBUM WAS WAY COOL AND WAS IN STEREO, BUT I CAN'T EVEN FIND THAT IT CHARTED OUTSIDE CANADA. FROM THAT LP, THE 'B' SIDE OF WHERE EVIL GROWS, I WAS WONDERING, CHARTED AT 100 U.S. CANNOT FIND A HISTORICAL EXPLANATION FOR THAT SEEMING LACK OF PROMOTION FOR A TALENTED GROUP AND WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A DOUBLE SIDED HIT. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS SONG! DAVEDJ
@gogunn My first record that I bought was a 45...it was 'Layla' by Derek & the Dominoes!!! That is so cool that you still have that record, mojofilter! I wound up gifting all my records to a friend who has a collection. She promised me that they would all be handled with TLC. My record player's diamond needle broke, and since my dad had had such a hard time finding one I decided that I wouldn't have much luck finding one myself...
@TheLadyanwyn I sometimes really miss my collection and wish I could get them back but the trouble I'd have to go through to get a turntable & needle probably wouldn't be worth it in the long run. I had 33s, 45s, and 78s, many of which I'd grown up with that were in my parents' collection. One that I miss a bit is an autographed LP of Tom Powers, 'Live and Learn'. My late ex had been roomies with him when Tom was a 'starving artist.' Ah, the memories.I bought my 45s with my allowance money.
@TheLadyanwyn Never give up on revisiting your records... I plan on buying a turntable and playing those vinyl albums.. when the bands behind the vinlyl... became our heroes... a place we could find our voice... great music and such great memories...Never give up and never surrender... what gifts you have ... those hours we spent pouring over our records... signing each ohter album coves. and hoping we would read them again.. 25 years later.. well here we are
I remember hearing this song in a movie....the scene was one of some dimly lit club with a chick singing it backed by a guitar playing the guitar. I really liked that version. Anyone got any clue which movie?
Haven't heard this song in such a long time! I was only 14 when it first heard it on the radio. A small snipet of this song was played in a Melrose Place promo back in '96.
@nanlisa No kidding, about the same thing here, that's way back. They never played it as much...ha, they used to play Witchey Woman all the time instead...but I used to dig it. First time I've heard it since. The POPPY Family, shee-it, I never would've guessed that!
CKLW ( The big 8) 800 on the AM dial was located in Windsor, Canada and broke many great Canadian singles in it's time as well as many Motown classics too.
Check out a brilliant short story called "details" by sci fi author China Mieville.
"A boy, charged with caring for a mysterious old woman, discovers that strange and frightening forces live hidden in the lines, cracks and creases of our world."
WOW! I haven't heard this song in a looong time! First heard it on CKLW in Windsor and ran out and bought it the same day! Thanks for bringing back the memories!
I read a piece by Terry Jacks, he said the inspiration for this song was the Canadian logging industry, and the Canadian government's attitude (money over environment) about them.
then Terry did a good thing! us humans are but a bunch of greedy people, arent we? greed is such a bad attitude, i hope the canadian government were not too pissed about it, cause in the end out of their greed a beautiful song was created!
Just got back from seeing Susan and band playing Woodstock celebration in Vancouver. Her version of this song was wonderful. Wish I could say the same about her slick country sound.for most of the rest of the songs.
@jymnmer Terry Jacks steered the group into a country direction after the first album. I saw the concert too and I loved it. She sang her hits as well as many of the Poppy Family hits.
The riff in the middle was stolen by Kurt Cobain for the song 'Rape Me'. Kurt was a huge fan of the Poppy Family and especially Terry Jacks guitar style.
I remember an interview with Terry, and he wanted the group to be called Susan Jacks and the Poppy Family (or something like that) so that Susan's career would be established if the Poppy Family ever broke up. Which it did when they divorced.
Do you have "Anna [or Anne] Marie" by Susan? I'd love to hear it.
@keikocat2001 Susan's career was already being established before she and Terry started the Poppy Family. She had been doing regular television shows as well as stage performances since she was 15.
thumbs up if your listening to this in 2012!

What's that? Nobody else noticed one of the most famous riffs of the 90's at the 1:34 mark? ;)

@edapSnoJ You talking about Nirvana?? Ya, they borrowed a few riffs. I don't begrudge them though. Brilliant!
You can actually You tube some footage of them covering Terry Jack's Seasons in the sun. Spooky.
