  • thumbs up if your listening to this in 2012!

  • I love this song! Hard to believe Terry sang Seasons in the Sun. Everyone makes catastrophic mistakes once in awhile. Huge thumbs up on this one.

  • I still like their music. Are they in the Canadian Hall of Music,if not they should be.

  • What's that? Nobody else noticed one of the most famous riffs of the 90's at the 1:34 mark? ;)

  • @edapSnoJ You talking about Nirvana?? Ya, they borrowed a few riffs. I don't begrudge them though. Brilliant!

You can actually You tube some footage of them covering Terry Jack's Seasons in the sun. Spooky.

  • Big thumbs up on this one! I like the harmony with Terrry and Susan.

  • first record i bought was wild thing by the troggs in 65

  • Yeah, that Susan was a hottie, very easy on the eyes and the ears!

  • I loved this song and played the hell out of it.. I just loved all their songs but this one was special . It's a catchy song and being 16 it was wild...Still love it today.

  • this song is proof there is intelligent life in the universe!

  • First 45: Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields...not too shabby.

First LP: Ram/McCartney...also a totally amazing album.

  • Okay, another new fave for me. : )

  • My producer sampled this and we've made an awesome song! check it out guys :)

  • im tryin to shroom out to this album...goin to be a bomb ass summer with this on my turntables

  • Hard to believe this is now 40 years old......

  • And now everybody knows where evil grows

  • this IS THE song i have been trying to find that I ALWAYS hear on the radio at work and your radio at your place<3

  • OMG this is the best thing I've heard this week!

  • THE 1971 POPPY SEEDS ALBUM WAS WAY COOL AND WAS IN STEREO, BUT I CAN'T EVEN FIND THAT IT CHARTED OUTSIDE CANADA. FROM THAT LP, THE 'B' SIDE OF WHERE EVIL GROWS, I WAS WONDERING, CHARTED AT 100 U.S. CANNOT FIND A HISTORICAL EXPLANATION FOR THAT SEEMING LACK OF PROMOTION FOR A TALENTED GROUP AND WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A DOUBLE SIDED HIT. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS SONG! DAVEDJ

  • Pretty groovy.

  • this band is fucking quality. check out 13th Floor Elevators for more

  • @Mr00mofo

    I love them!!!!

  • They played this during the battle between Ricky and Death in Kids In The Hall: Death Comes To Town

  • How was this not a huge hit in the US? Great song!!

  • original version always the best...

  • What was the first record you ever bought? Had to save my money from selling flower seeds door to door to get this one.

  • @gogunn

The first record in my collection was "Walk Right In" by The Rooftop Singers. I still have it, too!

  • @gogunn My first record that I bought was a 45...it was 'Layla' by Derek & the Dominoes!!! That is so cool that you still have that record, mojofilter! I wound up gifting all my records to a friend who has a collection. She promised me that they would all be handled with TLC. My record player's diamond needle broke, and since my dad had had such a hard time finding one I decided that I wouldn't have much luck finding one myself...

  • @TheLadyanwyn I sometimes really miss my collection and wish I could get them back but the trouble I'd have to go through to get a turntable & needle probably wouldn't be worth it in the long run. I had 33s, 45s, and 78s, many of which I'd grown up with that were in my parents' collection. One that I miss a bit is an autographed LP of Tom Powers, 'Live and Learn'. My late ex had been roomies with him when Tom was a 'starving artist.' Ah, the memories.I bought my 45s with my allowance money.

  • @TheLadyanwyn Never give up on revisiting your records... I plan on buying a turntable and playing those vinyl albums.. when the bands behind the vinlyl... became our heroes... a place we could find our voice... great music and such great memories...Never give up and never surrender... what gifts you have ... those hours we spent pouring over our records... signing each ohter album coves. and hoping we would read them again.. 25 years later.. well here we are

  • @gogunn me and my 3 brothers all chipped in to come up with 60cents to buy George Harrisons "What is Life?"

  • @Syzygy60 flip side was "Apple Scruffs"

not sure if was plural,I believe it's at my parents house i may have it,here

  • @gogunn been there done that also lol

  • This is one of my all-time favorite songs.

  • Good tune.

  • Kurt Cobain of all people loved this band

  • Wow, I had never heard this. Great song! Blame Canada! ;-)

  • very cool sound

  • just perfect to my early summer ambiance!

  • I remember hearing this song in a movie....the scene was one of some dimly lit club with a chick singing it backed by a guitar playing the guitar. I really liked that version. Anyone got any clue which movie?

  • @ringosatyarr

the movies is "Things Behind The Sun"..i really like that version also, unfortunately can't find it anywhere, no soundtrack released from the movie

  • @gguggenheim : danke dude, i'll see if i can get my hands on that movie somehow.

  • @ringosatyarr

    you're welcome..it's on Netflix

  • @ringosatyarr it's "things behind the sun" & i adore that movie :)

you can find it here on imdb

  • Sweet collection of posters n' such...great sound too.

  • great song!!!!

  • I used to pick up CKLW here in Philadelphia at night. That's where I also first heard the Dennis Coffey song Scorpio.

  • So nice, but any print on deezer :s

  • Translation on aisle five!

  • Haven't heard this song in such a long time! I was only 14 when it first heard it on the radio. A small snipet of this song was played in a Melrose Place promo back in '96.

    I love this song!

  • @nanlisa No kidding, about the same thing here, that's way back. They never played it as much...ha, they used to play Witchey Woman all the time instead...but I used to dig it. First time I've heard it since. The POPPY Family, shee-it, I never would've guessed that!

  • Very nice..

  • I used to have this 45 in my jukebox - thanks for the memories!

  • Boy, it sure brings back memories. Thanks for posting!

  • Yes CKLW in Windsor , Ont - I think they called it, the Big 8 ( memories )

  • One of my all-time favourites!

    Great stuff!

  • CKLW in Windsor, also CHLO out of St Thomas , listened to them both...in Ingersoll back in the day

  • Remember hearing this on CKLW in Detroit.. Definitely had some impact.

  • CKLW ( The big 8) 800 on the AM dial was located in Windsor, Canada and broke many great Canadian singles in it's time as well as many Motown classics too.

  • Check out a brilliant short story called "details" by sci fi author China Mieville.

"A boy, charged with caring for a mysterious old woman, discovers that strange and frightening forces live hidden in the lines, cracks and creases of our world."

Reminded me of this classic song.

  • I remember my mom and my old man

used to play this song on the old record player!!. Brings back some memories

  • WOW! I haven't heard this song in a looong time! First heard it on CKLW in Windsor and ran out and bought it the same day! Thanks for bringing back the memories!

  • evil grows in many places, very inspiring song! never knew of this band before... damn...

  • I read a piece by Terry Jacks, he said the inspiration for this song was the Canadian logging industry, and the Canadian government's attitude (money over environment) about them.

    FWIW

  • then Terry did a good thing! us humans are but a bunch of greedy people, arent we? greed is such a bad attitude, i hope the canadian government were not too pissed about it, cause in the end out of their greed a beautiful song was created!

  • Great studio production on this song.

The acoustics, harmonies, and that bass! One of my faves.

Thanks very much for posting good quality sound!

  • At the 1 30 mark listen carefully and you will hear where Kurt Cobain stole music for his smells like teen spirit song

  • a little but Kurt still did his own twist to make that song his own

  • I've never heard this one before. Really good!

  • Just heard this on CKOC in hamilton for the first time. What a great song i'm gonna learn this on keyboard it seems fun to play.

  • Just got back from seeing Susan and band playing Woodstock celebration in Vancouver. Her version of this song was wonderful. Wish I could say the same about her slick country sound.for most of the rest of the songs.

  • @jymnmer Terry Jacks steered the group into a country direction after the first album. I saw the concert too and I loved it. She sang her hits as well as many of the Poppy Family hits.

  • The riff in the middle was stolen by Kurt Cobain for the song 'Rape Me'. Kurt was a huge fan of the Poppy Family and especially Terry Jacks guitar style.

  • what a cool song

  • great tune. thanks for posting

  • this was the first 45 I ever bought, at Eaton's record barn, shall we say it's been a few years but I still love it, Thanks, Lori

  • one of my fav 45s from the early 70s-A CLASSIC.

  • My friend and I had this great song on 45 and we wore out the grooves from playing it so much!

  • Thanks for this, great song.

  • the original " Blondie "

  • D.O.A. did a cover version of this with Terry Jacks as a guest. It's featured on an album called "Murder".

  • Really? I'll bet that's an interesting version!

  • @mojofilter02 it's great! It was hard to find for years, but it has to be on youtube. Good old Joey Shithead!

  • @mojofilter02: Theirs was a denouement of the Alberta government, if I recall.

  • CANADIAN ! YEAH ! How Come I Never Knew Terry & Susan Jacks Are/Were (?) Canadian..well..I was only 13 and..it's a LONG story..LoL..

  • Everyone knew somone that was so classic to this tune,.

  • That's what I call a bassline.... It is a very catchy tune and the harmonies seem to blend to perfection....

(and OK guys Susan is a hottie I have to allow you that!)

  • I am discovering a wealth of information thanks to all the fine research you have done.

Your songs are being enjoyed by many people too. Susan Jacks looks utterly ravishing.

  • Thank you for the kind words. And I agree - Susan is a babe. A babe with a voice like an angel.

  • I remember an interview with Terry, and he wanted the group to be called Susan Jacks and the Poppy Family (or something like that) so that Susan's career would be established if the Poppy Family ever broke up. Which it did when they divorced.

Do you have "Anna [or Anne] Marie" by Susan? I'd love to hear it.

  • @keikocat2001 Susan's career was already being established before she and Terry started the Poppy Family. She had been doing regular television shows as well as stage performances since she was 15.
