That is Funkhouse band playing behind Betty Davis. Fred'Funki"Mills,(of Chops)on keyboards; Carlton Morales, guitar(of Julian Lennon 'Vallotte",and The Mighty Majors), Nikki Neal (of The Mighty Majors), and Larry Johnson,( Betty's cousin)on Bass. Disco great Tracy Weber,"Sure Shot" and Kevan Tynes"You Can Never Go Back", sung with Funkhouse when Betty Davis was off on tour in Europe.

I love betty davis. where is she at today?? so that's larry grahm on the bass? i hear he played on all of her stuff. whip him with my purple chain. I hear she was talking about hendrix on that tune.
"Nasty Gal" was one of the best LP's of the 70's, if not the best funk LP of all time. I miss her greatly. Larry Johnson on the bass was a monster. Love it.

Nice photo montage! Betty was/is cool. Sounds like a rolled-up wet ol' lady who chews tobacco and wears combat boots, looks like a supermodel. One hot mamma, fo sho.
I love the FUNK in all its forms. Even tha Funk that was really treble influenced, just right for AM radio in the early 70s. Stuff with a lot of Fender Rhodes,Clavinets,Guitars and Hard Vocals.
Even the Deep Warm Groove Bass oriented FM radio stuff like Flashlight,More Bounce, Rapper Dapper Snapper.
this girl i s naming all the blakc rockers, isaac hayes is really rock and roll, bill preston is really rock and roll, curtis mayfield is really rock and roll, amazing lady
Incase no one else responded...Betty was written up when her CD's were re-released ah...either early this year or last year. DOesn't have a lot of dough...she got out of the biz a long time ago. Anyway, I remember an article saying she was kind of a homebody....
This young slip of a thing, blows everyone away! Oww, me likes! How the hell have I not come across her for before. Like going through life without Stevie or Tina. Amazing! This has got to be heard, where do I pick up the CD. I'm blown away.
I had the "album" when it came out, this is the UNDISPUTED queen of funk rock! w/ cats like Larry Graham, Hershall Happiness (GCS)Buddy Miles, Neal Schon (Santana, Journey)The Pointer Sisters, Sylvester, Gregg Errico (Sly & Fam Stone) and even hubby Miles, yall missed it! I saw her live once, awesome! still huntin' for LIVE videos, anybody holdin"? oh yeah, also on that BD show was a new band, The Commodores and brother Gil Scott-Heron!
I love "hard 70's funk" particularly Funkadelic. You know "tougher" than alot of the "synth nice stuff" which isn't all bad but doesn't have the same "guts".
I am familiar with the "major players". Anyone see some rare stuff on here that is "hard"

Yeah, Tina was standing next to Ike in the full photo, who seemed to be telling her something to do in a recording studio. That would explain it. I used it because she looks like a badass.
It came from the always excellent MOJO Magazine, which must be the best Rock mag ever made. All of you out there should check it out for the deep articles and the best photos!
It's time to bring back the Funk in Black Music again because it's gotten to slick with this bling bling Beyonce and R.Kellys of the world. We need the raw shit again.

Nice presentation. What is Betty up to today. I am a huge Davis fan, grooved to her funk back n da day, saw her once open for GCS (Larry Graham), she rocked the place. Betty was way a head of her time. I still have orginal Lp's and updated with import cd's.
Be sure to check out the NEW video, "HE WAS A BIG FREAK", too! It seems to be escaping YouTube's radar and isn't appearing with the other Betty videos. Hit "More from this user" to your right and scroll down...
I actually saw Betty LIVE in Virginia at Carter Baron Ampitheatre opening for Grand Central Station in 73. She was raw and rauching. Dressed just like her photos. I was a HUGE fan. The funkiest chic EVER. Thanks for finally posting this. Amazing!!!!
Not wanting to step on your funk. But the carter Baron Ampitheatre is in Washington DC. I'm also a big fan and I went to every show she played in the DC area. Iether just to see her or Other acts she shared the bill with. She was restrained at Carter Baron Ampitheatre. But she let her freak out at the Capital Center. I shot her whole show on super 8. If consumer video was out then, you would be enjoying it here on youtube.
My bad! and I'm actually from DC, LOL! You are right, her show there wasn't as crazy as I'd hoped but still made my night. If you have great footage can you somehow transfer & upload it. That you be great!
Betty Mabry aka Betty Davis was light years ahead of her time. She was more than a Nasty Gal. She had the vision to expose her then husband Miles Davis to a new world. He began to listen to Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. This was the period he recorded Bitches Brew and went into fusion. Betty's music and face has resurfaced after a long absence. Betty has chosen to live in anonymity over the years. But her music has found a new audience. I hope Betty has solace with her new found popularity.
Thanks for the comments; it's becoming clear how much many of us care about her, and new folks are catching on, too. Tell any of your friends about the videos so we can spread the love!
This song got me in to funk in the first place. Still after so many years this is an incredible track!

You may be thinking of "Bold Soul Sister", a 1970 song that Ike & Tina Turner did. (The riff is a variation on Sly's "Sing a Simple Song").
