My only problem with Nicolas Cage being considered for the role was that he is too well-known. Every new Superman character must be played by an unknown actor so the audience will see him as who he is and not some big hit wearing blue tights and the red cape. Richard Donner was smart enough to realize that when he had Robert Redford replaced with Christopher Reeve who was an unknown at the time. That also was the only right thing Bryan Singer did having Brandon Routh cast to play Superman.

It is better for the Man of Steel to be played by one who is not as recognizable because he needs to be seen as the character developed for a live-action film and not the actor in the outfit. Other superheroes can be played by well-known actors because they wear masks or transform into things that do not have their actual faces (like Ghost Rider and the Hulk). Superman always has his face.

It is also okay for a well-known guy like Robert Downey, Jr. to play Tony Stark because he wears a helmet when he is Iron Man. A well-known guy can also play Dr. Bruce Banner because he transforms into a giant green monster. But Clark Kent needs to be played by a lesser known actor because his face is still showing when he becomes Superman.

I figure that probably had something to do with producer Jon Peters not wanting the Man of Steel wearing his traditional blue and red nor him being able to fly. Actually in the script, it starts off with his normal costume until he dies. When hes resurected he's in a black armoured suit which is plain with no symbol or cape. Then the eradicator, in his final moments morphs a part of his body into an s-shield and puts it on his chest. Finally supes flys by his grave which has a superman cape as a flag, and he puts it on creating a new suit.
