  • Real nice job! glad to see something other than a heat motor just spinning a flywheel. it is a step foward no doubt. i dont know because i dont have one but it looks like these motors just like to spin, and not do any work. kind of a radiometer of sorts. so why not use the flywheel motion to be more like a wimherst machine. and then find a way to charge batteries with that energy? just a thought, and thankyou for the video.

  • It is very good and it MIGHT help solve the problems of the world! I have an experimental tracking system that can focus the energy from 9 or 10 sq ft on a stirling engine. Thats about 45 times the power of your working water pump! Or you could go bigger it you wanted.

    The idea is about 5 months old and so far i just have it at model stage.

    Anyone can try it, it is a free idea, it is open source and available at appropedia.

    Combined with stirling engines, perhaps it can change the world.

  • Most people make them in their garage with a few machine tools (a lathe and a milling machine), but you sometimes see them on e-bay.

  • The power cylinder is 3/4" bore and stroke. The displacer is 3/4" bore and 1 1/8" stroke. As the power piston is never at top dead centre when the displacer is at bottom centre, the two can overlap by about 3/16", giving a slight improvement to the compression ratio, which is very small at the best of times.

  • Annular gap is about 15 thou.

  • Great video! I am making a stirling with a single cylinder finned barrel now and it should turn an alternator. Stainless water bottles make great displacers I have found if you can tig weld with some skill.

  • Just wondering if you have played with the gear ratio? Would the sterling engine turn a larger diameter pulley mounted to it and a smaller one to the pump?

  • -The gear ratio was already fixed but I tried to get the most out of the set-up by pumping the water from as low as possible and if I put the bottle on the floor it would not run at all. I had to raise the bottle on the bucket so as to reduce the load, I had tried various other heights first and that seemed to get the best result. The engine was designed to run on a candle, when it runs much faster.

  • Well if one were constructed of a greater size and of much more durable materials, it could be that very village pump.

    Certainly easier to repair in the event of damage than a solar cell would be too for acceptable results.

  • your ideas are sound but what we are trying to do is reduce power costs so a lager lens used on a hydro powerstation with a pump action moving water back up could help aslo the placement of a globe with the lens central can get sunlight to hit the chamber at any angle ;) my copyright diectional focused sunlight from any angle.then it depends how big you want to go for free power.if we had 10000 power stations in the deserts we could supply the worlds power dont think small think epic.

    As laurdy mentioned, perhaps you could get the water to flow around the cold cylinder to improve the performance?

  • The vertical green tube contains cooling water but on solar power it doesn't get very warm. The engine was built to run on a candle where it gave 0.9 watts and the water got a little bit warm. It likes that better because the already thin oil gets thinner and reduces friction.

  • This is the best example of a stirling engine on youtube. Can you tell me how the pump works this is the only example of a small simple pump ive seen.

  • The suction pipe comes up through a hole in the table into the bottom of the pump where there is a valve which consists of a 6mm ball from a ball bearing on a 4mm hole at the top of the pipe. The piston rises up and draws the water through the valve and discharges water already above the piston out of the little pipe. The piston then comes down and the water in the cylinder flows through a second valve in the piston, from where it will be discharged when the piston next rises.

  • The Coke can type of engine will work well enough, but the power developed is very low because the temperature difference is too small between the hot and cold ends. You don't have to be an engineer.....but it helps!

  • I'm in love. I really want to learn how to make one of these! I tried to start out slow today with a coke can Stirling from a japanese site's plans, but to no avail :^\

    Does one need an engineer's education to tinker with these?

  • If you used the pumped water to cool the cold end of the engine you could get a few more rpms out of it.
