This is the only version I've heard with a 2nd verse that's different from the 1st. (The other versions just repeat the 1st verse.) And this is clearly a different version from the Korgis' original release. I like Beck's too. Dark, smoky vocal. Lovely tune. Rare to find something so simple, with so many ways to interpret it. July 1980. I was 18 and yet it seems yesterday to me! I danced with my girlfriend on this music at the local disco of my birthplace in Brittany, France. Funny. It was the time I realised I 'd prefer dance with my sailing friend and realised I am gay. This song has "haunted" me since I was a Sophomore in high school in 1980. I have always thought about it in my mind. I couldn't remember the name of the song (funny huh?) and the artist. Finally found it and I can't stop playing it.. So far about 20 consecutive times now. The lyrics are so basic so simple yet such deep, sad, and love evoking emotions are pulled deep within me.
