  • I've never said this before because it's usually not warranted, but how can you dislike this?!

  • The inimitable Jaco, why oh why do we lose these talents so early. I had a dear friend, the best bass player I have ever played together with. Gone to cancer two years now, makes my heart ache to think of it. He loved Jaco, turned me a guitar player on to him, and like Jaco he always strived to stretch the limits of what could be done within the context of the music style he happened to be playing at the time. R.I.P. my Brothers.

  • saw them live in NYC, back in the day, 4th row orchestra seats, WOW!

  • Dude, I love when Jaco sings, it's funny!

  • Y'all should check out the University of South Carolina's version of this song.

    Absolutely awesome.

  • In the Dutch Language, there's a great saying: "Over smaak valt niet te twisten".

Translated it means something like "You can't argue about personal taste (of food, of music, etc.)". I think that should be a message to all the haters trying to convince us to like another genre of music or another artist: "Over smaak valt niet te twisten." So don't waste your time trying.

  • kick ass! sorry it took me so long : (

  • thx to my history of jazz teacher, love this song <3

  • <3 Jaco...

  • Has to be one of the most amazing group of musicians to make music together... ever. Absolute magic.

  • My jazz band does this

  • i don't think zawinul has enough keyboards, jaco enough groove in the world to run through, shorter anymore soul to display, and erskine any more erskine to be... fantastic all around

  • RIP Josef Zawinul.

  • A supremely talented band of musicians.

If you liked this, then buy the live album '8:30'. I've got a really nice vinyl copy!

I was talking with a friend last night, and we both seem to think that the main melody (from the studio version) was used as a tv theme. Maybe a sitcom. Can someone shed some light on this?

Also; Jaco's one of my favourite bass players- in fact I'm in the process of converting a cheap fender-jazz copy to a fretless!

    Thanks Guys!

  • man, his nipples are as small as mine

  • @ZOMBIELANDakaUSA i love your username so much

  • @papavb

it fits like a glove...the reference, lol

  • Words can not express how great weather report was and its music still is. Really...it's beyond word!

  • @calangodoido JACO: oggi sono 24 anni che non ci sei più! Hai lasciato un vutoto incolmabile!!!

  • not sure is that wane shorter on the sax

  • @repsac371 Only Wayne Shorter sounds like that, but yes, that's what he looks like as well. He's an angel btw. peace

  • idiots !!! dislike isn't button for replay !!!!

  • wow. This is being swung. wtf :D

  • Best part (outro Joe Zawinul))

  • lo mejor de weather report!!!!!

  • I was born too late!

    ...again!

I feel like the magic moments of music happened before these days.

I Would easily swap hybrid engines, Facebook, 100MBit Internet and electric cigarettes for Wishbone Ash, Jaco Pastorius, Creedence and a genuiene meeting with actual musicianship. I've not quite reached 20 years btw...

  • @Account3of7 true i wish i was born earlier for all the good music so i could it live

  • oops, i meant drums.

  • OMG IT'S RON JEREMY ON DRUGS! HOLY SHEET! haha jk it's peter erskine.

  • @TheAlmightyBassist not on drugs, just on a diet. Strong call. separated at birth?

  • Jaco was not the focus of the group, but his voice was so unique, that it stood out to be noticed!

He was the most recognizably different player of his day, and I loved all of the players from that era, not just Jaco!

Clarke, Squire, Jamerson, babbit, kay, Meeks, Mims, et al!

  • the best ever , he inspired us all

  • NO SHIRT

    NO SHOES

    JUST GROOVE

  • love this song. SCI does a really good version too, does plenty of justice too the masters

  • best recording of birdland ever

  • Lol at the way he stares at him at 6:26

WTF u duin there screamin like that yo

    LOL

  • Jaco....the best bass player

  • I've never heard a shuffle version of Birdland. Wow. Nice.

  • To the persons that hit the "Don't like button" I say: kiss my bass.

  • @FuckinSeriousBusines as much as i appreciate the sentiment, that pun (?) was physically painful to read.

  • Classic!

  • Visite my channel for some great bassworks! Jaco forever! Love his soloing...

  • God do I ever love YouTube!!!

  • Jaco <3

  • This is got to be one the best songs ive ever heard and listen to all the time

  • Legends never die!

  • My favourite song!...I love it!...thanks Jaco, thanks Zawinul!!

  • Incredible!!!! and i wrote this 51 seconds into the video...

  • Jaco was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1988, one of only four bassists to be so honored. He is regarded as one of the most influential bass players of all time.

  • The drummer is a caveman lol.

  • @RLHubner The drummer is the world famous Peter Erskine, who first recognized and supported Dave Weckl as a great talent, as Erskine himself is.

  • @RLHubner haha, i honestly thought he was wearing a shirt at first!

  • honestly, i'm not diggin this song at all. Jaco is a dope bass player tho.

  • its the drummer from the dairy milk advert!

    :D

    joke!!!

top tune! please dont fight over bass players, there is NO better!

each bass player plays their own thing.

  • Could Jaco ever pull his pants even higher?! LOL

    just joking. respect.

  • Weater Report or the Beatles is like ............air and water although there is air in water it the hydrogin that made Jaco what he was but you need to take the hydro away and all he had was a love for gin............sorry about his luck. My band will do a Weather Report tune and the crowd looks at you like WHATS THAT do a Beatles tune and they ALL know it. Jaco WAS great and Paul still IS great. To the dude saying Paul is no better then a 12 year old..........what planet are you from???

  • Especially true since Jaco always listed Paul McCartny as one of his influences. Jaco was great, but people often forget what he stood for. In his own words, "keep an open mind man, as long as its good, who, cares." Jaco played in a variety of genre's including rock, country and western, jazz, funk, salsa, and classical.

  • Wow, I think some of you guys are missing the point. How can you say that Jaco is "better" than Paul? More technical? More musical? They were two completely different players playing with completely different groups in different times.

Paul's strength was in his songwriting, Jaco's strength was his improvisation. Jaco was an instrumentalist; Paul was a composer, player and vocalist. It's comparing apples to oranges!

Music is not about competition. Music is about personal preference.

  • I totally agree with this one. Jaco was the better bassist but paul is the better songwriter composer. They are both equal musically.

  • While Jaco always listed Paul McCartny as one of his influences, I think you should know that Jaco also composed a plethora of Jazz tunes. No, there is no comparison between genre's. Paul was Paul, and Jaco was Jaco, but Jaco was also a very accomplished composer.

  • ジャコパストリアスはいつになくセクシーである

  • Really miss "Weather Report" What a beautiful version of "Birdland" and the best bass player the world has ever seen, Jaco P... R.I.P.

  • @trojanluck88 god bless jaco im shure the world loved him

  • @trojanluck88 this is the original verison so it better be beautiful

  • @trojanluck88

Zawinul (the gent with the wool hat on playing the keyboards) wrote Birdland. This IS the original :)

  • that setup joe has is crazy

  • Haha... it's hilarious to read the name "McCartney" and listening to the music of this god at the same time... McCartney is not better than a 12 year old garage band player... Jaco, in the other hand is uncomparable, he was and will be the best, forever.-

  • NO ME CANSO DE ESCUCHAR ESTE TEMA

JACO ES EL MEJOR DEJENCE DE Mccartney

  • omg this song is amazing, jaco pastorious is the god of the bass =D

  • of course mccartney was great, and a huge influence on the bass world... but as time goes by someone comes along and takes it farther than it has been taken before... and that person was mr. pastorius...

  • Jaco is better than Paul by FAR. This isn't even worth debating. It's plain fact that Jaco is a better bass player than McCartney

  • Paul was a great song writer with a great voice, not a bass player...brilliant.

    Right place/right time.

Jaco was pure natural self taught genius

A jazz bassist he stand alone.

Oh yeah and one messed up dude, manic depressive/bypolar whatever.

In the end,Wrong place wrong time...

  • McCartney and Pastorius? I've read many crazy things here but this? C'mon.

  • Jaco was a unique individual...You really need to keep track of those guys.............

  • Why start flame wars?

You like McCartney more? That is great, go listen to his page, just don't come here and start depreciating this music with your wars of who is better.

No matter how hard you try you can never change someone's opinion.

So just sit back, relax, and listen.

  • i really hate wootens name alot i dont know why i hate it so much

  • i must paul really is not that great of a bassist

  • what has paul mc cartney done for the bass world, are you serious ?? sorry i wont bother with you, that is the most pathetic comment i have read....

  • THIS SONG IS AWESOME!!! i wish i could play that good..:(

  • Are you practicing?!!!!!

  • wonderfulll,very intersanttttttttttttttttt,jaco !!!!!!

  • We get the message, Texasradio73, you don't like Jaco. Thanks for imposing your continuing campaign against someone widely regarded as one of the greats in a good number of Jaco clips. You don't like jazz is the deal, you can't deny Jaco's completely in the pocket here in every way. If you teach bass, I pity your students.

  • nah , i just think its funny shit stirring people on here

  • yeh texasradio73.

your a bit of a spaz.

im 15. i listen to metal (most the time) an play bass yeh?

and i only found about this guy about 3 weeks ago. now, hes like my idol. i cant believe you think this is boring. u must be a shit teacher.. id have to say he is amazing

  • what kinda metal?

not all that nu crap right?

  • VOS SOS UN SALAME

  • no i dont eat salame

  • no no YOU YOU ARE a saleme gil

  • your on drugs

  • How does he get that sound for the part at the beggining, I think it's the intro?

  • do mean the organ bass riff or the harmonics? :D if you mean the high notes that jaco plays, they are called harmonics. there are many ways to play them, i personally play them with pressing my right thumb against the string while plucking with my finger.

  • Woa. when ever i play harmonics, they sound a lot more like portraits for tracy, and not quite so harsh. I mean there not even false and he can control they're length so well. Truly amazing. :)

  • Thats because he is playing an artificial harmonic, a fretted note that is dampened with the plucking hand. He can control the length because its just like a normal note, its all in the plucking hand. Sick Stuff, Jaco, Thank You!!! RIP...

  • i started as a guitar player, so i do false by using my index finger to set the note and pluck with my thumb.

  • haha

that was my problem i came from guitar to the 6 string was a hard transition for my right hand haha

  • this song rocks. so does jaco.

  • joeyyyyyyy!!!!! thank belsebud those dudes met!

  • Jaco!

  • Jaco is nailing it on this performance!!

  • Zawinul, Shorter, Pastorius......it just doesn't GET any better than this!! Thanks for posting!

  • Jaco is the only bassist that would wear no shirt during a jazz concert, Jaco was crazy... but i love him.

  • protip for all those stating drugs: he suffered bipolar disorder which can increase creativity substantially

  • Best part: Jaco's singing

  • omg^^ such a fast version :D

  • geniusssss

  • Saxofone=Wayne Shorter.

  • u want saxophone?

  • Enough cannot be said about Jaco and his bass playing. I'm always finding a new depth of appreciation for what he did.

  • Joe Zawinul, Jaco Pastorius & Miles Davis... That's going to be my "reception committee" when I get there...

  • great bassist jaco

  • The Master at work!! 21 Years Jaco, 21 Years. We Miss You.

  • Jaco is simply the best, RIP.

  • awesome, I like it. ^^

  • jaco RIP you god

  • Great shirt on Peter Erskine. Is that real ape hair? Real class!

  • una grande perdita per il mondo del basso.. RIP Jaco

a big lose for the bass world RIP Jaco

  • GOD BLESS YOU JACO :)

  • Brilliant Brilliant Brillaint

  • To bad they hit the drugs

  • if it wasn't for the drugs this song probably would have never been written.

  • Gotta disagree. Musician's will be creative, regardless of what is coursing through the bloodstream - it's in their nature. RIP Jaco, and more recently, RIP Joe Zawinul.

  • thejohnofsteel, you realize that jaco was completely straight and refused to even drink until after he composed his debut album and played with early weather report for awhile. It was just him.

  • erratic behavior, as well all know by now, was started by bipolar disorder. plus, his sharpness with the time justs reeks of complete soberness. def not high.

  • q banda mas mutante aguante los x-men

  • amazing musician jaco pasturias RIP

  • What a Great band!

    Thanx for sharing

    Amedeo & Belinda

  • Perhaps Jaco was a to fine carcter for this world. If you see his appearings on videos you find him as a very nice and humble person.

  • This could be the best live version of Birdland ,

    with the original line up.

Looks like Jaco's having a great time , or maybe 'high' on something?

May you rest in peace, bassmeister...

  • This isn't the original lineup for Birdland. They're missing Manolo Badrena, and Peter Erskine has replaced Alex Acuna.

And I doubt Jaco was high on anything other than music here, although his erratic behavior was starting to show up around this time

  • Yeah he was more crazy than an addict. Anyway it was a great shame that he died so young, he was an incredible talent.

  • Hmmm-think I'm there with u. I don't care wot he's on or if ain't got clothes or nothin', 'cos he don't need it. Wayne Shorter - root yer boot. Zawinul... excuse me while I have an orgasm! Is that Alex Acuna? Gimme a break...

  • Awesome! Fuck the bass, Jaco should have been a singer! lol

  • Naaah! He was a bassist so us singers could know wot to go for...as for Joe Z, no sleeping here! Talk about chromatic excellence in the extreme!
