The inimitable Jaco, why oh why do we lose these talents so early. I had a dear friend, the best bass player I have ever played together with. Gone to cancer two years now, makes my heart ache to think of it. He loved Jaco, turned me a guitar player on to him, and like Jaco he always strived to stretch the limits of what could be done within the context of the music style he happened to be playing at the time. R.I.P. my Brothers.
In the Dutch Language, there's a great saying: "Over smaak valt niet te twisten".
Translated it means something like "You can't argue about personal taste (of food, of music, etc.)". I think that should be a message to all the haters trying to convince us to like another genre of music or another artist: "Over smaak valt niet te twisten." So don't waste your time trying.
i don't think zawinul has enough keyboards, jaco enough groove in the world to run through, shorter anymore soul to display, and erskine any more erskine to be... fantastic all around
If you liked this, then buy the live album '8:30'. I've got a really nice vinyl copy!
I was talking with a friend last night, and we both seem to think that the main melody (from the studio version) was used as a tv theme. Maybe a sitcom. Can someone shed some light on this?
Also; Jaco's one of my favourite bass players- in fact I'm in the process of converting a cheap fender-jazz copy to a fretless!
I feel like the magic moments of music happened before these days.
I Would easily swap hybrid engines, Facebook, 100MBit Internet and electric cigarettes for Wishbone Ash, Jaco Pastorius, Creedence and a genuiene meeting with actual musicianship. I've not quite reached 20 years btw...
hey guys, do you think you all could watch my bass vids and drop some comments on em? id appreciate hearing your thoughts. ill be posting some more vids, so you can subscribe if you want. ill return the favor. thanks!
Jaco was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1988, one of only four bassists to be so honored. He is regarded as one of the most influential bass players of all time.
Weater Report or the Beatles is like ............air and water although there is air in water it the hydrogin that made Jaco what he was but you need to take the hydro away and all he had was a love for gin............sorry about his luck. My band will do a Weather Report tune and the crowd looks at you like WHATS THAT do a Beatles tune and they ALL know it. Jaco WAS great and Paul still IS great. To the dude saying Paul is no better then a 12 year old..........what planet are you from???
Especially true since Jaco always listed Paul McCartny as one of his influences. Jaco was great, but people often forget what he stood for. In his own words, "keep an open mind man, as long as its good, who, cares." Jaco played in a variety of genre's including rock, country and western, jazz, funk, salsa, and classical.
Wow, I think some of you guys are missing the point. How can you say that Jaco is "better" than Paul? More technical? More musical? They were two completely different players playing with completely different groups in different times.
Paul's strength was in his songwriting, Jaco's strength was his improvisation. Jaco was an instrumentalist; Paul was a composer, player and vocalist. It's comparing apples to oranges!
Music is not about competition. Music is about personal preference.
While Jaco always listed Paul McCartny as one of his influences, I think you should know that Jaco also composed a plethora of Jazz tunes. No, there is no comparison between genre's. Paul was Paul, and Jaco was Jaco, but Jaco was also a very accomplished composer.
Haha... it's hilarious to read the name "McCartney" and listening to the music of this god at the same time... McCartney is not better than a 12 year old garage band player... Jaco, in the other hand is uncomparable, he was and will be the best, forever.-
of course mccartney was great, and a huge influence on the bass world... but as time goes by someone comes along and takes it farther than it has been taken before... and that person was mr. pastorius...
You like McCartney more? That is great, go listen to his page, just don't come here and start depreciating this music with your wars of who is better.
No matter how hard you try you can never change someone's opinion.
We get the message, Texasradio73, you don't like Jaco. Thanks for imposing your continuing campaign against someone widely regarded as one of the greats in a good number of Jaco clips. You don't like jazz is the deal, you can't deny Jaco's completely in the pocket here in every way. If you teach bass, I pity your students.

and i only found about this guy about 3 weeks ago. now, hes like my idol. i cant believe you think this is boring. u must be a shit teacher.. id have to say he is amazing
do mean the organ bass riff or the harmonics? :D if you mean the high notes that jaco plays, they are called harmonics. there are many ways to play them, i personally play them with pressing my right thumb against the string while plucking with my finger.
Woa. when ever i play harmonics, they sound a lot more like portraits for tracy, and not quite so harsh. I mean there not even false and he can control they're length so well. Truly amazing. :)
Thats because he is playing an artificial harmonic, a fretted note that is dampened with the plucking hand. He can control the length because its just like a normal note, its all in the plucking hand. Sick Stuff, Jaco, Thank You!!! RIP...
Gotta disagree. Musician's will be creative, regardless of what is coursing through the bloodstream - it's in their nature. RIP Jaco, and more recently, RIP Joe Zawinul.
thejohnofsteel, you realize that jaco was completely straight and refused to even drink until after he composed his debut album and played with early weather report for awhile. It was just him.
erratic behavior, as well all know by now, was started by bipolar disorder. plus, his sharpness with the time justs reeks of complete soberness. def not high.
Hmmm-think I'm there with u. I don't care wot he's on or if ain't got clothes or nothin', 'cos he don't need it. Wayne Shorter - root yer boot. Zawinul... excuse me while I have an orgasm! Is that Alex Acuna? Gimme a break...
I've never said this before because it's usually not warranted, but how can you dislike this?!
