  • yes little richard always acknowledged marion williams for that high note . i saw him on the kennedy honors telling her that in tribute to her

  • Oh hallelu!! Yas praise him sisters!

  • wait, is this Marion on lead or Clara?

  • ms. ward had a tremendous influence on aretha franklin's life.

  • another amazing post. Marion was such an annointed singer with those Heaven shaking notes....why is it that there are so few left who sing it old school? This song keeps my feet a tappin' and makes my heart feel light....I am packin' up and I am ready to go...amen....

  • the legacy continues check out their little cousin LaShawna Moore.

  • And not only are the women in white carrying their pursie books, the women seated have their hats on their heads and their pursie books in their laps. PRAISE GOD!!

  • Little Richard stated on numerous shows TV, concerts, radio, etc. the Queen Mahalia Jackson was his ultimate idol. He absolutely adored her and studied her.

  • @Linelia

A lotta singers don't credit the singer that they actually copied the most, you know, to hide the Real Source.

Janis Joplion used to say Bessie Smith when she sounded more like Etta or Maybelle.

Nancy Wilson says Jimmy Smith when she's obiviosly doin Dinah; Joni Mitchell says Miles Davis when she clearly copied Joan Baez.

  • I would have gone to their church, just for the music. R&R and R&B owes a lot to this stuff! Excellent.

  • thank you for this post

  • They are singing this song lord have mercy

  • I absolutely love this picture.. concertgoers in their church attire obviously anticipating a great concert in a packed house...the performers making their way to the stage to the delight of the audience...this affair could have been anywhere!!!!

  • Having seen All and I do mean ALL of the gospel greats perform from James Cleveland, Alex Bradford, The Davis Sisters, The Caravans, The Harmonettes, The Ward Singers, The Stars of Faith,The Raspberry Singers,Andrae Crouch, Walter Hawkins, Bobby Jones, Richard Smallwood, The Winans, BeBe & CeCe.and virtually all of the quartets, Clara Ward was #1 when it came to performing.

  • @geoedgrav

I wish you had video for all of these live events!

  • I love this version! Awesome!

  • Henrietta, Kitty, and Marion were Packin' up and ready to go away from Clara and Gertrude.

  • LOL!!!!

  • Well, this is certainly the version I know.

I got to read these comments about the purses getting snatched.

    Ya'll done tickled me.

  • Love the photo you used. The song plus the photo made me feel I was really going back in time - before I was born. lol

    Very evocative.

  • Clara always made such good studio recordings that had that "live" feel to them, when Marion would sing this live, she would basically try to copy this studio recording~~and of course, grab a woman's purse and run down the aisle with it packing it like a suitcase!

  • Thankyou: Love these post .Great stuff -but have to say -LITTLE RICHARD got his HIGH NOTES from here.......

  • thanks so much, glad you enjoyed, and yes, Little Richard got it from Marion..lol!

  • @DaSourcespr06 This is the "Famous Ward Sound" at its best! this line up featured Mother Wards best singers ever.

  • If you ever heard the one Clara did before she starts you can her is she singing lead lol it is funny.

  • she would take anything she could get her hands on and be hitting high notes all over the church for about a whole minute and when I say hit every note right my Lord

  • Amen! This is a gospel music classic!

  • Man I had missed that one. It's awesome, JUST GREAT !!

  • Can you use a better choice of words. This is a GOSPEL song

  • Thanks, tallbaby40. You know some of us have acquiesced to the degeneration of the wicked day!!!

  • One of our choir directors used to play for them and he said when they started singing about packin up they broke out with suitcases.

  • LOL

  • They sho' did, and one time I saw Marion takin' folks coats and purses.

  • LOL !She took purses huh? Our minister of music said she wasnt gettin paid her fair share.lol

  • Unfortunately that is true! Gert was lining her own pockets, but died poor.

  • That's the same thing he told me.

  • Love it! This is classic, and no one does it like the Ward singers!

  • I LOVE how they are carryin their purses in this pic....every1 in church aint saved....

  • and u would be correct!

  • @DaSourcespr06 to answer ktpdfan in those days the centers and buildings blacks rented to have revivals and such, they couldn't use coat rooms or the other facilities that were extended to white patrons so everything you brought in with you , you also had to carry in hand.if you had noticed that was not a church.SORRY- ONE WHO KNOWS

  • @ktpdfan LOL

  • @ktpdfan And those purses would give that ol' Devil a good whack too!!!

  • @ktpdfan A Holy woman is never without her Bible and pocketbook, Just incase she gotz to beat some demons out of someone or somewhere! LOL
