  • I was lucky enough to be around when these guys were at their best....Fillmore shows and Stony Brook and numerous other places....just so amazing these guys were....i am still stuck in the 70s and early 80s for sure...

  • i cant believe how sweet the guitars sound nothing like this today thank god for you tube or i never would see all the extraordinairy performances like this

  • Dig the spirograph

  • cool video thanks for sharing it

  • Watkins glen 1973 great show berry and Duane were there in spirit ask the 700000 fans their still talking about to this day

  • Barry Oakley never gets enough credit for his wonderful ability to play base, complemtary to his brother, Duane. Not related? In spirit and soul they are. Yes, I know, his brother is also Greg.

  • His name was Berry, not Barry. I remember hearing the news of his untimely death. His technique was way ahead of the times. Very few bassists were playing chords in 1970. Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke, but they were only known in jazz circles. Jon Camp (bassist for Renaissance) was also doing this kind of stuff in the early 70's. But no one followed the lead guitar player like Berry. Listen carefully to his bass lines especially the live stuff and you'll hear what I'm talkinng about.

  • Dicky Betts is a brilliant song writer and penned many of the Allman Bros. biggest hits including this one. He was also the pertect muse to Duane. They differed both in tone and style, but complemented each other like no other guitar tandem in rock.

  • wow what a treat thanx for the upload anythg with the original line-up is a treasure for me... of course anythg w/ Duane is also equally exciting.. i heard hey jude w/ Duane on Wilson Picketts version for the 1st time i was smilin' & grinin' ear to ear

i had heard alot about Duanes studio legendary tracks & that was one of them..

  • Truckstop, I'm just curious if you know the date of this show...?

I'm looking to download the show and I can't find it anywhere.

    Thanks!

  • @JeHa227

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, this was recorded on Aug 26, 1971 in New York City

  • @TrucksStop

Thanks so much! I actually found the show in it's entirety available for download on sugarmegs. Its called,

A & R Studios, NYC - 8.26.1971. Great performance! Also a good one to check out is, Stonybrook 9.19.71.

The precious few shows that were played before Duane passed were certainly the best. I've got about 60 live, Duane era shows!

  • @JeHa227

The sugarmegs in a great tip, I'm sure lots of Duane fans will appreciate it!

  • @TrucksStop The Fillmore closed June 27 of that year;it may be that show since the Brothers closed with Jake Geils.

  • Nobody but nobody can make a guitar sing like Skydog! RIP Duane.

  • Hi sorry about this really stupid question but can anyone tell me the name of this song and what album I can get this live version from? Its freaking amazing...sends me to a different place lol...Sorry if I piss anyone off lol. I'm only 16 dont shoot me T_T.

  • @iMakeY0Ucrazy

This song is: "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" This is only about one third of the song, and this particular version is from a live radio show. The classic recording of this is on the amazing "The Allman Brothers at Fillmore East" -- that's a must own CD if you like Duane's playing.

The (Deluxe Edition) of the Allman Brothers "Eat a Peach" (Deluxe is very important, it has additional tracks) has another great version. Caution, can be habit forming.

  • @iMakeY0Ucrazy when i was 16, i first head this song. must've been '93. blew my mind. these guys were great to see in the 90s with dicky betts and warren haynes. great times.

  • @iMakeY0Ucrazy 16?! That's when I REALLY got into them and I'm only 24. Get the Live At Fillmore East album. There's few, old, live albums at store you can get, look for the deluxe editions!!! please explore your curiosity. I have never found so much joy in life as I have in their music. at ypour age, everybody is getting influenced by shit that record co.s are selling. your generation and mine is falling into a pop/hip-hop vaccum. save yourself and get into this band!!!

  • point of all the stupid graphics might be that the video does not match the audio. some kind of joke--look at duane, he is playing a different tune!!! very strange video....

  • yeah, duane is left-handed. almost all left-handed people who play a bowed instrument--and this is a huge number of people--all play their instruments ''backwards''. in my life i only have seen one person play a violin bowing with their left hand. my point: same thing for guitarist, left-handed people very often learn picking with their right hand, not their left.

  • Sweet sound!!!

  • what was the point of adding all of those stupid fucking graphics to this video?!

  • @tominlax

As I wrote to a similar comment a year ago: If only I really had video of Duane playing during this performance. All the visual effects that bother you simply cover up the fact that playing doesn't fit the video. The original video, with original audio, is on youtube, enjoy it.

This was just an attempt to share a bit of magic, even though no video exist

  • mark knopfler is a lefty too.he says he thinks having his dominate hand doing the fret work helps him to sound how he does.

  • H*ll Ye*H

  • damn, was that a flash back I just had? Gotta lay off those shrooms.

  • badass!

  • You have to wonder how much more great music Duane would have created if he hadn't suffered such an untimely death. I'm ready for heaven if Duane and Stevie Ray are jamming there.

  • Wish there were more Great music like this in the world instead of this Jonas Brothers and whoever else is out there Whoring themselves for some quik cash!!!

  • Great post! Many thanks.

  • I think this comes from the WPLJ radio broadcast. I have a download of it.

  • Perhaps the title shouldnt be taken literally, but Duane never played in Europe with the ABB did he? I never knew Duane was a leftie, that's a new one to me.

  • Duane and Greggs were lefty, but they learned to play right handed guitar.

And yes, the ABB never toured on Europe.

  • Hmmm, I could tell alot of the song was based on elizabeth reid, but I hadn't heard that part/version before, thanks loborome.

  • As all you warped lefty guitar players know, you are all nuts from having to live in a right handed world. Although I think it has really pushed bluesmaster14701 over the edge into the deep end of the pool. Who cares if he is left handed or right, he plays great!

  • Anyone know what song the solo he plays from 0:10 through at least 0:30 is?

  • From 0:00 to 4:29,the whole song is "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"

  • just one of the jams in Liz Reed

  • I'm a lefty and I play guitar right-handed. Lefties can have an advantage playing guitar right-handed due to the fact that their fret hand is their dominant hand and thus, they can fret easier and more efficiently. Righties have their dominant hand strumming.

In fact, lefties are historically known to be better at just about everything than righties. That's because we have to learn in a right-handed world.

  • I'm lefty and started learning it like a righty, but it was soon before i asked my teacher to change the strings. I couldnt even strum a chord properly and when i switched it was so much easier. Only bad thing is that there are almost NO guitars for lefties in the normal music stores. Seriously, only crappy guitars.

  • Mike Bloomfield was also a lefty who played right-handed. Check out my Blues Rock - Hall of Fame video. At least 4 of the top 10 are left handed!!

  • @TrucksStop Steve Morse (who is a big Duane fan) also a lefty who plays right handed

  • @TrucksStop - then we need more lefties playing right-handed!

  • Greg and Duane was both lefty. I am lefty too but play guitar right handed. I play the drums righty as well.

  • :) They sure were. I'm also a lefty who plays righty!

  • Folks ,it's not that hard to figure out . When this was recorded on cellolose or whatever film was made of , you could easily put the film in backwards on the video player ,or when processing the film . Like holding a negative up to the light

  • the thng with allman contrary to the other left handers, was that he was playing exactly a right handed guitar upside down, with the strings set up for a right handed guitar.

  • What? When, where? I've never seen a single photo of such a description. Can you provide one, or, a link? Thanks ~

  • It is much more commone for left-handers to play guitar right-handed. Mark Knopfler is another. Hendrix could play a right-handed guitar normally, he could turn it upside down and play left-handed on a right handed guitar. In fact, Jimi's father Al would smack him around for playing left-handed.

  • most of the time people that are left handed and are wanting to play the guitar are told to just learn it right handed, easier to find a right handed guitar probably even more so then

  • Nothing is better than Dickey & Duane together!!!!!!!!

  • Nice job with the video !

  • Listen closely to the drumming. especially about 1:38 in, very nicely done!

  • Duane was a lefty. Some people say because of this, he was able to play a right handed guitar more precisely. I dont know.. i know is still ramains the best. Derek is good, realy good with "Duanes spririt but Im not so fond of the Eastern Influences he throws into his solos. 09 beacon run was amazing.

  • Those are what makes him better than Duane.

  • music isn't contest to see whos better

  • @Danjd1 Stravinski: " Competitions are for horses!"

  • Your opinion is worthless if you think Derek is better than Duane.

  • look, duane died very young. who knows where he would have gone. Derek on the other hand, who was hevily influenced by Duane, has had so much music absorbed. plus he just has amazing guitar skills, he NEVER misses a note.

  • "Duane was a lefty" what?

  • Yes and Gregg Allman too.

  • Hi: I'm not sure what your message may be referring to. Is it the "Duane Allman lefty" question? If so, what is your source of information? I've followed Duane Allman for decades and have never heard of or seen him playing guitar left-handed. Do you have any actual photos or information from a reliable source stating he was ambidextrous? (a lefty as well as right-handed). Cheers ~

  • You're correct, he didn't play left-handed , but he was left-handed. Go to the ABB forum and search for "left handed" in the Duane category - this is common knowledge. (Makes him all the more amazing IMHO)

  • Interesting. All these years and I've never heard any mention of it. Do you know if he wrote left-handed? That's odd for someone who's left-handed to, for whatever reason, play an instrument the opposite hand. Have you ever read or heard any other sources making this claim about him being a lefty? Cheers ~

  • Sure, read "Skydog" or "Midnight Riders" it's mentioned there, but like I wrote, over on the ABB site there is lots of discussion about it.

  • Great. Thanks for the tip. ~

  • I saw a picture of Duane eating and he had his fork in his left hand.

  • Nobody bends strings like Duane . . . his using his dominant hand to do it is probably a factor . . .

  • it ain't weird, i'm a lefty and i play right handed for this reason:

when i go to my music store i actually wanna play a guitar, and 99% of em are right handed

  • @kevinneslund

  • Duane wasn't a lefty???????

  • Simply stunning! Thanks for the videos and interviews! Duane Allman is the worlds best guitarist, living or dead! Amen!

  • cool video truckstop, i like your style

  • thats really FAR OUT...

  • This is taken from the A&R Studios,NY 8-26-71 recording. This set also included a near 20 minute version of 'You Don't Love Me' with a tribute to the then recent death of sax legend King Curtis. They spontaneously cut into 'Soul Serenade' about 8mins into the song with Duane taking the lead. Just shows how emotionally fired up and creative Duane was at the time. Wail on Skydog!

  • This is INCREDIBLE. To finally be able to see footage of Duane. I was born 4-17-71 I'd love to see more footage of Duane, if you have any. LOVE "you don't love me". That right is pure bliss.

  • Cool version. Its a little less frenetic than they sometimes played w/ Duane. Thanks!

  • Thanks for a fantastic post! I just wish the 3 hours or so of video footage out there with Duane could be released. In the meantime, we can still track down bootlegs.
