Yes jobs have been shipped to other countries like China and Mexico but there are plenty of factories that used to be in places like Detroit and Toledo that have decided to shutdown and ship their businesses to places as close as Indiana. With lower utility costs, lower worker's compensation rates and lower corporate taxes to include less red tape to start a business in the state of Indiana (vs MI or OH), it is a no-brainer for the business owners.

Actually the 1962 6% City Income Tax killed Detroit. Everybody with a job moved to the suburbs where property taxes were lower. The race riots were a symptom, not the underlying disease.

The actions of these mayors (with well documented ties to organized crime, the KKK, illicit drugs, and rigged elections) led to the sequence of events which eventually spawned both the race riots AND the city income tax. There was nearly half a century of events that chased people (the ones who could afford it) out of the city..

Adding to my previous comment, the reason unions are inefficient is because they thwart the market in assigning the true cost of labor. Market forces are very good at determining proper expenditures for labor. Teachers can thank unions and the lack of proper competition for their supposed low income - teachers have brought it upon themselves.

I would say it does not have everything to do with it. Part of the problem is cultural, to be sure. As a nation the US has come to devalue intellectual achievement. However, I think it is difficult to argue that paying teachers a higher salary, to use only one example, will attract and keep more and better teachers. Compared to the many countries that out-educate the US we pay our teachers a pittance.
The schools today don't need more money. They need more competition. If we introduce market forces into the school system, we will see quality go up, and prices go down. Vouchers ladies and gentleman. At the moment the teachers unions coddled by this bureaucratic monopoly protects incompetence, and ignores excellence. It's like a little socialist state.

For all of you that believe that the fault lies with the unions are totally misinformed. The unions were not promoting laziness but, were promoting equal rights and fairness. It is because of collective bargaining agreements that they took pride in not only building but,also owning the vehicles they made. Yes jobs have been shipped to other countries like China and Mexico but there are plenty of factories that used to be in places like Detroit and Toledo that have decided to shutdown and ship their businesses to places as close as Indiana. With lower utility costs, lower worker's compensation rates and lower corporate taxes to include less red tape to start a business in the state of Indiana (vs MI or OH), it is a no-brainer for the business owners.

Actually the 1962 6% City Income Tax killed Detroit. Everybody with a job moved to the suburbs where property taxes were lower. The race riots were a symptom, not the underlying disease.

Actually, the fall of Detroit stems from the gang violence started during the Prohibition Era. Think Purple Gang, Joseph Martin, John Lodge, John Smith, Charles Bowles. The actions of these mayors (with well documented ties to organized crime, the KKK, illicit drugs, and rigged elections) led to the sequence of events which eventually spawned both the race riots AND the city income tax. There was nearly half a century of events that chased people (the ones who could afford it) out of the city..

The Liberals are to blame for Detroits collapse. Coleman Young in particular! How long was he Mayor of Detroit? Too long. Then you have crooks like Kwamme Kilpatrik who destroy it even more. Newt represented Georgia's sixth district for a very long time, and during that time his district received the most federal subsidy of any suburban county outside DC, so it's hypocritical of him to talk free markets when he never practiced laissez faire. Adding to my previous comment, the reason unions are inefficient is because they thwart the market in assigning the true cost of labor. Market forces are very good at determining proper expenditures for labor. Teachers can thank unions and the lack of proper competition for their supposed low income - teachers have brought it upon themselves.

I would say it does not have everything to do with it. Part of the problem is cultural, to be sure. As a nation the US has come to devalue intellectual achievement. However, I think it is difficult to argue that paying teachers a higher salary, to use only one example, will attract and keep more and better teachers. Compared to the many countries that out-educate the US we pay our teachers a pittance.

I'm liberal, but Newt Gingrich is eerily right on this issue. Black people don't seem to be able to sustain a great city, state, or country anywhere in the world in which they're a majority.

I live in Toledo Ohio and I know well about whats going on Detroit(its about an hour north of me). In Toledo, we have Similar problems. Obama and McCain need to go to Detroit and need to come to Toledo to understand what is going on.

Look at NYC as a whole this is happening in Brooklyn, Harlem and the Lower east side. Neighborhoods once infested with drugs and property values in the ground have been over taken by "investors" and now the communities that once were have been pushed out AFTER the beautify it? Why isn't money thrust into those communities to give these people the proper educational system and opportunities so that they can get a chance at a better life? This is a JOKE by this clown

I know people that have come from all over the country to come to NYC and help in this effort. The mere fact that your insinuating that the people "ruined" these neighborhoods is the furthest thing from the truth. The truth is that the City and Federal government slight them by not funding their school system properly and they are also poorly policed. Its more too it that what you just asserted, so don't feed me soup.

How is it not the people who live there that make a place a community?Commerce,Education,Duty...all these things start from the ground up,you cant blame the goverment for a particular areas decline (there are exceptions)...It the money and more importantly effort that make communities prosper.

So long standing communities with a poor education system and area with rampant drugs that has NOTHING to do with the the governments responsibilities? Listen, if an area is flooded with Drugs, its not the communities responsibility to arrest and stop the influx of drugs. Further more the public education system is to be funded properly so that the ROOTS of said community will enrich its youth and leaders for that community. Ok, poor neighborhood, drug infested, you have those that want to learn and those that want the drug game.. So Im a hard working student but the drug dealers don't like me and since the cops don't give a damn, they don't make many arrests. I get jumped and cut every now and again until I can't take it anymore and finally kill one of them or beat some one up and they eventually kill me. So... do you see how this works? But I guess you never grew up in the hood so u don't have a clue do you?

I find this to be laughable how this guy wants to grand stand on the fact that the government is subsidizing areas in America that are not invested in other than entitlement programs. Why not invest in the educational system and programs that will enrich the city? This charter school b.s. is a wash, thats exactly what is happening in Brooklyn. The property is cheap, let me develop it starting with charter schools THEN we'll snatch up the property for less and gentrification will start. WOW

I was born in Detroit and it was a great city until Colman Young became the mayor. Newt may have driven a car built in Detriot but I do not think he realy has any real experance of Detroit or it's real problem and needs. We are all upset about New Orl. and the after math of the storm but my home town was hit by a man made storm and is still dying forom it!

Poverty does not breed violence. There are plenty of poor countries with low incidence of violent crime. IGNORANCE causes violence, a bankrupt inner city culture is steeped in violence, lack of fathers in the home raising emotionally secure MEN creates instead physically grown children with a continual need to prove themselves.

Not quite,most poor people i know are pretty non-violent and i know plenty of people with money who are.Poverty mad lead to crime,but not necisarily violent crime.Trust me,i grew up poor.There are many ways to make money without being violent.And even if that was the case,so what? Being poor doesnt give you a built in excuse to act like an animal.Many factors lead to being poor as well,ineptitute and lazyness being a couple of them.

Everything Smittysniper has said is right, I worked for Ford for 7 years until the offered a buyout. I got the hell out of there, the Union is a joke. People were making $35 doing jack shit. We had a relief job that all you did was give people 30 min breaks. Everyone would give up their breaks and the relief guy would just go home! lol. I'll admit I loved abusing the system, what job could you leave for 4 hours and get wasted, come back and finish the night off. Mgt didn't even care lol.

For all of you that believe that the fault lies with the unions are totally misinformed. The unions were not promoting laziness but, were promoting equal rights and fairness. It is because of collective bargaining agreements that they took pride in not only building but,also owning the vehicles they made. Why does it always seems to be the fault of the Union when all decisions are made by the "SUITS". Who's to blame when a laborer can't afford to buy a product that he builds every day?

Every contract renewal, the union would shut down plants if they didn't get what they wanted. Unions NEVER give anything back and their greed has now cost Detroit and America one of the greatest industries. There are many good auto workers, but believe me, there were plenty of lazy ones too, white and black. Now we have Kwame to deal with. What city would ever elect a 31 year old. That says it all about the current collective mind of Detroit.
