I really enjoyed your video. I love spam and I have a friend that lives in HI (I'm in Houston, Texas) that mentioned this to me so naturally I searched for some information on it and found your tutorial. I love how you used the spam can to make the mold. I'm going to have to try this soon!
instead of frying the spam, try boiling it in a pot with half and half water n shoyu (soy sauce), and lots of sugar for a about 10 minutes. The spam will be a lot better.
OMG!! I love your tutorial!! So simple and easy to understand!! :D :D :D
I am going to make this for my friend on her birthday!! My only problem is that I don't know how to make sticky rice. -____- I only know how to make regular rice. Dx
@x3linhvuonggg I used a non-stick skillet and with SPAM, it gives off enough fat. But if you want you can put just a tad, like half a tablespoon. I wouldn't put a lot.
Easier just to roll the rice and spam in the nori sushi-roll style then cut in half. Holds together better that way too and makes a nice portable snack.
ty. good instructions. I was brought up to cook Polish and Russian food. My son-in-law's family have a house in hawaii and while I visit, we eat spam different ways. I am lucky to be able to join and eat turkey spam because i cannot tolerate pork. Today, I was looking for a video to make the rice shiny. I am trying to use sugar and vinegar method. However from you, I appreciate the idea to put water into the mold. That I will do today. ありがとう
lol i broke my can opener cutting bottom out and the jaged edges sliced me when i was makeing it but other then that hell yeah it was amazing omg with a little soy sauce to dip it in mmmmmmmm
@casualthug07 Spam is already seasoned, hence the name spiced ham, so you really shouldn't a garlic salt. Also, you don't need oil, even in a nonstick pan, because spam already has a lot of fat and oil in it and unless you cook it too long it won't stick. If you're going to comment about something, you should know what you're talking about.
@weirdjaja I keep it in the refrigerator although it can be kept outside for a day. When I want to eat it, I bring it out of frig and let it get to room temperature. Nori gets soft with the moisture of the heat of the rice, so sometimes to keep it crispy I wait till the rice cools or I wrap it at the last minute before I eat it.
Mmm that looks really neat and yummy! Thanks for the molding tip. :) my spam musubi I use oyster sauce and teriyaki sauce while frying it in a pan with a bit of oil so it wouldn't be too dry and then I sprinkle a bit of sesame seeds mixed with tiny bits of seaweed and then I wrap it :)
you can use a sharp chef's knife or a cleaver to cut the bottom of the can off in a fell swoop. its soft steel and won't damage your blade at all. poke the tip in and pull hard all the way around. bottom of the can will be SHARP, tho.
@timjo13 why would you? Is it hard to find Spam where you are? It's sold in almost every supermarket in the United States in the canned meats section. I don't think you'd want to make it your own. Then it wouldn't be SPAM.
@wackyruss It's delicious and it's because people here couldn't get a hold of better meat during WW2, I believe? Or something like that. But hey, it tastes good so....
haha, "Spam, America's favorite lunchmeat!" right...I'm American, and I can't say I've ever had spam before...and I don't know anyone who likes it...just sayin'.
@illinifan512 I guess that would work. A toaster oven would be more like broiling the spam, which will still get some of the fat to caramelize. I just can't get past eating Spam straight out of the can.
@MrRoydizzleable I used a non-stick pan so didn't really need oil. Sometimes I might but a little bit just to get it started, like maybe a teaspoon of oil. Otherwise, the Spam has oil that comes out and creates the caramlization when rendering some of the fat out. I wouldn't use a lot of oil, if any.
@ripstikgod I know what you mean. I had a hard time too. But the thing is the can is pretty light weight, so if you use a hand-held can opener and make that first puncture, then it's not too bad from there on. Patience is the key.
Just a note about the rice: When making any sort of Japanese-style dish, I use Calrose Rice (Botan Brand). Wash the rice until the water runs clear. I do this in the insert that goes in my rice maker, but use a separate bowl if you are going to cook the rice in a pot. The rice comes out best when I use 1 and 1/2 cups rice and 2 cups water. When it finishes cooking, I add 1/4 a cup of rice wine vinegar.
6 parts of rice to 8 parts water and 1 part of Rice Wine Vinegar is the correct proportion.
Yeah, the traditional recipe is just plain rice as far as I know. But I like to spice the rice up a tiny bit when making musubi since the Spam can take it. Boy, now I'm hungry!
I've never heard of sushi. I put rice vinegar, which people complain about because they say that's more for making sushi and not a musubi. They say musubi rice should just be seasoned with a pinch of salt.

good video! i prefer the spam sandwiched between 2 layers of rice instead of on top, spam fried in teriyaki sauce, with a nori sheet wrapped around the full length of the musubi. lol crazy tasty!
Oh, that's kind of hard to explain if you're making it for the first time. I have a rice cooker so it's super easy just adding the rice and the amount of water noted on the cooker. But if you don't have one, you'll just need a pot and sushi-grade rice (short grain) and the old trick is to put in the rice and then fill water so it covers about a quarter inch layer over the rice. Then bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer and let it simmer until it's cooked. About 30 minutes for a cup.
@singleguychef easier way to cook rice, short grain rice, is 1 cup of water for 1 cup of uncooked rice. So if you have 3 cups of rice, it needs 3 cups of water. put that in the rice cooker and your rice comes out perfect every time.
Oh god. I love spam! *drools* Hell yeah, go to dollar general and fill up a cart with that stuff. Good thing is most dollar generals have some snazzy stuff to make even more food ( both spam and non-spam alike )
using the spam can is a brilliant idea. thanks for the tip! btw, don't you have to apply some eel sauce between the spam and rice for better taste? i was surprised you didn't use any sauce..
he by didn't past out the fumes when opening can?.

One of my roommates in college was from hawaii and his mom used to send mosubi in care packages. mmmmmmmmmmmm, good!
He also introduced me to the joys of a rice cooker.
Thanks for showing the trick of using the can to shape it.
I always wondered how his mom got the shape so perfect.
Hers weren't cooked of course.
But we used to constantly cook whatever cheap, greasy, meat-type-product the local supermarket would provide to eat with our rice.
Makes my mouth water to think about it.

How do I make the rice? I'm asking here before I google.

Groovy, thanks.

@singleguychef easier way to cook rice, short grain rice, is 1 cup of water for 1 cup of uncooked rice. So if you have 3 cups of rice, it needs 3 cups of water. put that in the rice cooker and your rice comes out perfect every time.

I am going to try this today. I don't know though, that seems like a whole lot of rice to eat with my spam :b

Yeah, his was a little on the thicker side, lol. But it's all good.
