I'm currently reading this book. According to my ereader app I'm about sixty percent through it. lol. I have to take breaks, though, 'cause it's so very bleak and depressing.
A lot of folks like to sling around "instant classic" and other labels to every half-decent book or film that comes out, but I honestly think - love it or hate it - that 'The Road' is one of the very few worthy of the claim. I seriously think this deserves to be looked back on as the 'Moby Dick' of its era in years to come.
I think its a great idea to make a book where there is virtually no plot. It makes it a masterpiece. We aren't supposed to understand parts of it, because its being told from reality's point of view. Its almost as if the author is trying to give out some sort of subliminal message and in reality we wouldn't have detailed explanations about what is happening, thats what makes it a must read!
I have a few questions. 1 (I know it is geek++ but..) Has anyone put forth a comprehensive explanation for the appocalypse? BTW I know there are many options - nuclear winter, global warming, a nanotechnological disaster, a combination of the above. 2 Does the book fail in conveying suitable reasons for the mother to commit suicide? Also is she literally blind? 3 Does the book fail in its soft ending? Does it fail to give us a sense of what is to come? I would love to read your thoughts.
I read this book, Im not the fastest reader, nor do I have the time, but I finished it in one a couple of days, maybe weeks, but im going to read thin again.
@TehPhatGuy I read this book for school I am 13 the book sucked really because there is no plot almost no characters except for 5 people really I mean is this literature because I hate it so much NO PLOT WHATSOEVER HOW the HECK did this book BE TURNED INTO A MOVIE
@Vyourtchenko64 I understand... The book isnt really supposed to have a plot, its like a really big diary entry. As for the characters, i think that was the intended thing by the author, to give you a lonely, helpless feeling when you read it.
I wrote an essay for my English class and my teacher suggested I read this book. I started the other day and so far it definitely seems like it's about godlessness and hopelessness, which I went into depth somewhat with my essay. I'm looking forward to the movie too.
@Vyourtchenko64 You have no sense of appreciation for the elements in the book/film. Perhaps you cannot fathom the loneliness and devastation depicted in the book. You need to go watch some cartoons or something. This book is not for young kids.
I really didn't care for this book. There wasn't enough character development and I didn't really feel any sympathy for them. I liked the juxtaposing of the man vs. the boy vs. the environment vs. the rest of the humans. Unfortunatley there really isn't a whole lot of plot drive to this book. The best parts are when the two encounter other people and that happens far too little and too briefly. Still if you liked the bleak, yet very human tones of McCarthy's other work give this a read.
I think if there would've been a lot of character development, it would have overshadowed the depth of the relationship between the man and boy to much.
just finished the book today. Took me a month to get through the first 100 pages then a week to finish the rest of 170 pgs. yeah it is hard to get into at first then just takes you in rip at your heart and wait on baited breath for the father and son to make it in this ruinious earth
@hogan1955 Thanks for being honest. I'm tired of seeing guys at Youtube who want's to be Reader of the Month. "I read this book in 2 hours." or "I read this book one night". No one reads a book in 5, 6, 7 hours. Not of this length. And if you do, you miss the whole plot, you just fast read to get over and say you read it in 2 hours. Even this guy had to read it in 2, 3 days as he says. 7 hours? 2 hours? bullshit.
I am in the process of reading this book and it is just gripping. There is actually a movie coming out on Nov. 14th, 2008 based on the movie and from the production photos it looks quite close to the setting described in this amazing novel.

I really liked this book. If I remember correctly, the book does describe something about cities being on fire. That suggests to me nukes.
Good review.
