  • He has a rare gift. He plays with his heart. The rest just play, but nothing really emotional is coming out.

  • Yes I agree fully with the earlier listener. This is really good . A musician with high compentence and musicality.

  • Ultimate violin and conductor moment 6:07. Just look at the conductor's hand

  • Amazing, Just amazing. He is so skilled. <3

  • I love at 5:51 how Zubin Metha just smiles at Shlomo's awesomeness.

  • i think i'm in love with him

  • Chuladas de pieza e interpretación.

  • Love it so much!! The best interpretation and bow technique!!

  • If you ever remove this video I will cry like a little girl, which I am not.

  • Gorgeous, heartfelt, timeless. His playing brings tears to my eyes. Bravo.

  • I love his bowing at the big string crossing bit at 1:56 he slurs it all in so his bow looks like ~~~~ or a big wave!

  • Bravo

  • He really "plays" with the violin and the masterpiece, skillfully !!! Very talented !!! Very enjoyable watching and listening. Thanks so much for posting an owesome artwork that is filled with character !!!

  • maravilloso, grande, genial y elegante

  • 6:30 "THAT'S RIGHT. BI*CH."

  • this is so beautiful...thanks for sharing.

  • I AM CHILD IN PLAYING VIOLIN AFTER HEARING THIS ...INCREDIBLE

  • This Guy is the Biz.

  • i love this piece and how everyone who plays it has a different style such as the way that Mr. Pearlman plays it <3 music and <3 <3 mendelssohn im playing this for all state this year i think

  • The best bow technic of the world

  • Good performance and the public were very enthusiastic. For me I felt there was too much vibrato generally. I had the impression he had trouble making enough sound. The violin maybe not up to it.

  • This is as good as any of Issac Stern's solo performances. That's why and how the two doubled to play happily a Bach concerto which many consider perfect. Precious recordings.

  • this is perfect.

  • Es realmente, esencial el buen movimiento del juego de muñeca de la mano derecha siento su sonido que le falta fluides...

  • He played with my orchestra today!!! Tchaikovksy!! in Caracas. And as encore he played a Paganini Capriccio I don't know which number (am bassoonist). Tchaikovsky third movement at lightning speed! uhuu! ^_^

  • Does anyone know where I could get an easy listening synthesiser version of this?

    Only joking!!

  • 0:38

    lol

  • mamma mia....

  • @aaron1640 just get private lessons. i wouldn't go online for lessons.

  • I own Mendelssohn Octet on LDR vinyl with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmoic. It's my most prized record.

  • thanks for suggesting

  • I LOVE the ending! Right before he plays the last note, he spreads his arms out; I never noticed that until now! He is truly an amazing violinist.

  • Fantastic!

  • the cough is hilarious!

  • My God, why do all the directors ignore clarinet solos? :-/

  • @subkontrabasklarinet Cuz they suck! jk

  • I'm beginning to appreciate that cough from the conductor, it adds something to the music! i'm almost diappointed that I don't hear it on other versions....

  • I LOVE this man! His bowing is GENUIS. I just got finished stealing it, with any luck I'll be able to exocute it even CLOSE to the way he does. It is brilliant. His tone is brilliant, his phrasing is brilliant. HE IS JUST BRILLIANT! Can't wait until I can see him live.

  • Yes!!! I'd commented on that in the past, I've never seen anyone with bowing like Mintz! I agree-- genius!

  • 4:27 ¿A quién no le gustaria tocar esas notas?

  • Schlomo Mintz? That has to be the most jewish name I have ever heard!!

  • i worship his bow control.

  • HE CHEATED -.- I heard harmonics......bad boy....

  • whats wrong with that ??

  • theres nothing wrong with that

  • I have the great privilege of being able to say that SM is a close friend of mine. He once told me (both being totally wasted) that on stage he felt it was not him playing. (sorry bro for telling this to the world) I do it only because when one listens to your playing, one can only believe in God.

  • i feel totally the same way , i always pray before a performance or rehearsal hence , it is not me who is playing

  • @cbalmori He played with my orchestra today!!! And when he entered the rehearsal room everyone just went silent haha... He didn't speak much but you feel such warmth emanating from him. Amazing man. You're very lucky.

  • incredible movement from an incredible concerto

  • incredible I love his playing.

  • Der Kreisler der Moderne. Einmalig, einzigartig, unglaublich. Besser kann niemand dieses Konzert spielen. Shlomo, der liebe Gott hat Dir mitgegeben, was ein Musikant außer Genie noch braucht: Seele.

  • if any of you young violinists out there are interested in learning from shlomo, visit the Keshet Eilon webpage. He teaches every summer in a Violin Mastercourse in Israel.. It's a fantastic time~

  • Really appreciate you posting this as I enjoyed watching and listening so very much..THANKS!

  • Ya know the head movements annoyed me too, but I gotta tell you, I shrunk the screen down, and just listened.... The guy is good. Very well played

  • good violist and also nice and humble orchestra

  • he's good but his head shakes like he has turets or sumthin and its both making me crack up

and annoying the shit outta me

    good tho

  • guy*

  • there is no doubt that there's a simbiosis between jewish spirit and the violin!!!

  • the best vibrato ever!

  • Muy bueno necesitamos tener mas.

  • wow cool bow action at round 1:57 looks like a continuous mexican wave!!

  • his vibrato is great

  • I have to agree with Emusic18... he plays very easily. It looks like nothing when he plays it. I also thought the bowing he took at 1:55 was really interesting... looks really hard! he plays the phrase using almost the whole bow and then plays it again with the same dynamic and power in almost no bow! I wish I were half as good as him!!!!!!!!

  • Yes! I'd commented on that beautiful "flip" of the bow sometime ago. The arpeggios are almost always played downbow across the 4 strings ascending, then upbow descending. The phrase repeats 8 times; he plays both ascendind and descending with downbow on the first and third, then upbow on the second and fourth. It's EXTREMELY difficult, and it flows so smoothly!

  • Great observation Ulfen Daddy-I agree. He has remarkable control over his bow. He is able to create texture with a stroke moreso than any violinist I have seen, changing from extreme pressure to absolute silk in an instant. Not only does one hear the music but you feel it crawl up and down your spine with the flick of his bow--it's great!

  • Espec. considering how active his whole body is in playing- a lot more body movement than many violinists. I was able many years ago to attend rehearsals of the Detroit S.O. with Isaac Stern preparing this piece. Watching I sort-of unfocussed my eyes and noticed that as Stern played, he had a great deal of body movement, but the position of his violin in reference to the floor never changed: he moved AROUND it! Mintz doesn't worry about that at all! But yes, his bowing is most impressive.

  • You were SO fortunate to get to attend that rehearsal! I think I would almost rather attend the rehearsal than the concert if given the choice. I really enjoyed your observations and insight :)

  • He plays it very suave and with elegance. Not an easy thing to do. He's the violinist with one of the best techniques.

  • I've seen videos of Farrakhan playing Mendelssohn and he is not good at all. He was horribly out of tune. It was definitely not the best rendition. Most college music students sound better than what I heard.

  • Has nothing to do with his race. I'm an actual violinist who knows music well. Maybe you are just tone deaf.

  • One of my teachers was in Leopold Auer's studio with Farrakhan when they were kids. He had a studio picture it was interesting to see.

  • is the vedio available on youtube?

  • I've heard of this guy before, but why did it take me so long to look him up on youtube? His playing is beautiful!

  • Yeah, chear, bravo... :) He performs often in the Netherlands. Good violinist!

  • Excellent, excellent, excellent!

  • the most elegant violinist ever

  • the peak of excellence as a classical musician,

yet a failure as a human being, completely. this is the cost of being the best, its quite sad indeed.

  • why a failure as a human being?

    fill me in

  • he is a funny guy

  • What a great performace of eveyone's favourite Violin Concerto! But did you noticed this INTERESTING bowing Mintz takes at 1:55-2:01? Dang! It's the same phrase 8 times, across 4 strings, but he shifts from mid-bow downstroke to Frog position UPBOW on the 2nd and 4th phrases, I've never seen anything like it!

Then taking the ultra-high E with his 3rd finger at 6:10 (uses #4 every other time that note occurs) is simply showing off; and MORE POWER TO HIM!

I'd like to know what instrument he has

  • have you even played this concerto?

i have and those two spots (1:55 and 2:01) are not the same thing. it only makes sense that he wouldn't do the same bowing at those places. at 1:55, he does the first string crossing up and down in one bow two times and then the next two times he does the up string crossing in one bow and the down in another because he wants more emphasis, it's not just because he decided to do it on a whim. learn the piece before you critique

  • I'm a violist, no I've not played the solo part. I've CONDUCTED it 3 times, and performed it on Piano once (violinist injured in an accident on the way to concert.)

The point I was making is, it's FAR from a whim. The phrase is played across all 4 strings, usually down then up-bow, 8 times; he does something unique and EXTREMELY difficult on the second and fourth phrases; then returns to 'usual' bowing. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear on that, but I think you are rude in any case.

  • BTW: Compare the section in question in Itzhak Perlman's performace (also posted in the Tube.) He plays the phrase 7 times as I'd always seen it done, then shifts to that up-bow only on that last! Very cool too, and interesting to compare the two. Regards.

  • i don't see that ultra high anywhere else in this piece...if you play that note with a 4th finger there is almost no more sound coming out of the violin (at least mine), hence the third finger; calling it showing off is not the correct description for me-i rather call it choice of interpretation. i can see some lefthand difference in fingering with perlmann as well

  • It is E natural, 2 octaves above the open string. It occurs at 1:43, 4:29, 6:10 (in question) and at 6:31. It is not used in the first 2 movements. In all instances but 6:10 he takes it with 4th finger, you cannot see his hand at 4:29 but both times I heard him play it live he used 4th finger. Yes it is a matter of interpretation, tone, technique, etc. So I stand by my original statement- Mintz is well aware of the power of flair and "showmanship" in his concerts, and uses it beautifully here.

  • in 1:43 and 4:29 no time to prepare a third finger (almost impossible) after all the 1/16 notes-did you notice in 6:10 the preceding note has half duration-that is the only reason why he does it only in 6:10-it is well known you can't get as much vibrato out of 4th finger as from a third so if you can fora long climax note you should play 3 by all means-by the way exactly in 1:43 perlmann climbs very differently from mintz (but kogan remains the best haha)

  • Yes, it's how it falls under the hand most naturally for him. You're very right about the volume of tone in regard to 3rd vs 4th finger, but I've not seen other players use 3rd in that instance. (When I conducted it, I had the musicians count the measure 5 beats long-- not rubato, but the high note was held 3 full beats for fun!)

Perlmann often has very creative, INTERESTING finger system; I watched him lead a master class for violas once, unique indeed.

  • I thought this fingering detail was very sharp and interesting, as I love Mintz' playing always. What I found truly fascinating though (if you know violin technique as you seem to,) is his bowing in the figures at 1:56-2:01. The phrase in 16ths ascends and descends 8 times; he take the second and fourth repetitions on UP BOW, at the frog, it's wild!!! Compare to Henrik Szering, a performance from the 60's, he does something similar but only on the last phrase. Regards!

  • VERY nice bowing technique indeed

  • also for the bowing there is a simple reason behind this (fantastic)interpretation:the bowing of the partition in these phrases ends up being upstroke for starting the climb at 2:02 which is very unnatural-probably also the reason why szering modified slightly the original bowing-only to perlmann it doesn't seem to bother in his performance who rigourously follows the written partition-but in all cases they all sound great and that's why they are virtuoses!

  • Great performer, stunning work by Mendelssohn.

    Perhaps the greatest composer ever.

  • Great, brilliant, and most awesome!

    one of the best player!

    bravissimo :)

  • Mintz is such a pleasure to watch. He is so graceful & elegant and his tone is always beautiful and bristling with life.

  • Shlomo Mintz est israelien, comme beaucoup des grands violonistes et musiciens de l'actualite: Perlman, Kramer, Zukerman, etc.

  • Beautiful sound all the way through and wonderful finish. He really is sensational to watch.

  • qui est en fait ce violiniste , chez qui il a travaille, d ou il vient ? Il joue vraiment bien !!!

  • please, if you have the next concerto of bach, please add it! I'd love to hear Stern and Mintz together.

  • awsome!

  • ppppssssssss!! we want the first movement!!! please!!

  • He has a beautiful tone

  • LOVE HIM! Fabulous!

  • wow..I really love this.reminds me of Sarah Chang's version (I don't know why). his sound is amazing

  • Because they shared the same teacher...

  • oh, really?..nice. no wonder their technique, sound and style is the same.even their bow-grip!thanks for your response.

  • this video is amazing... shlomo mintz definitely is a genious... I don't know why he is not so popular as others violinist, this clean technique... sound, everything is magnifique jejeje...

  • Wow....definitive live performance

  • pppsssssssss,

please, add the first movement of this video and szeryng's tchaikovsky 1st. mvt.

    i am begging you !

  • thanks for this video

  • Watching him play in all these videos, I always get the sense that he's in a violin competition and is trying to win over the judges. Nevertheless, I've always enjoyed watching AND listening to him play.
