I have this original 45 record from my Moms collection..I believe this is about 1956 and it just may be the first example of guitar overdubs and the speeding up of the tape ...this is pretty rare and you don't hear many references to this tune..still today it comes off as a really cool song..
Fortunately I was sitting when I saw this video ... how can a man in the 50's be the creator of the shred with sweeping technic + creator of Les Paul guitars ? must be an alien :( what am I doing now ? burning my stratocaster ?
In this day and age when every man and his dog has a signature version of their main/fav axe you can see the vision Gibson had in creating a guitar with the genuis's name on it, not a signature version but a whole new guitar that has stood the test of time across all genres of playing.
@heavymetalbushwalker In fact Gibson was pretty reluctunt to have him make the Les Paul under their name since their "core business" was archtop and acoustic guitars and there was no real demand for a solid body electric guitar. Epiphone actually allowed him to make his prototype "the log" in the early 40s and when he went to Gibson with that they turned him down. It took almost ten years for them to see that there was a market for that and call him back and we had the first LP's in 1952 or so.
Hey, here's an idea...why not comment on the music playing on the screen and how good it is regardless of the era. Instead, we're treated to comments by idiots who can't talk or write without dropping hate and F-bombs. Bunch of idiots. Save your stupid politics for the right venue. This isn't it! Great video, great inventor and would put anyone current to shame if put alongside in his prime. Too bad some people below just do not get it.
@313curt Look man... the first comment I said was basically how much I like this tune, then that BigBossCockSucker starts talking shit to me. And yes I can fight I box twice a week. I can get along with anybody which is how I think everyone should be... I bet if we were at at bar and had a couple of drinks, then shot some pool you would see that we could become friends.
@videostunad: If you Google people you find out all sorts of things. She was born as Iris Coleen Summer and came from a musical/performing and preaching family. She sang and performed on guitar and was introduced to Les Paul by Gene Autry. When they decided to have a go of it, she chose "Mary Ford" out of the phone book as it was almost as short a name as his.
@rocknarchangell: No not really. That "timbre" of the guitar is what it sounds like when sped up. Early 1/4" reel to reel tape machines usually had 1-7/8th's inches per second, 3-3/4" and up to 7-1/2" per second speeds. If Les recorded his playing something at the slower speeds but played it back at a higher speed that while playing along in real time, this is the sound that would result. Mary was no slouch on the guitar either. Gene Autry introduced them to each other.
@ELC3b I just watched Les Paul and Mary Ford and I think you´re right. These "I fuck your mother! - No I fuck your mother twice!" comments are absurd in such a context. Cheers, peace and love from Germany! ;-)
@BigBossInc Do you feel better now to be the only cunt to dislike this video "to spite" me? And why... because I think this video is amazing? That is something a little girl would do...you sound like a little bitch. I hope you get cancer.
@BigBossInc yeah yeah yeah...I know you wouldn't DARE say that to my face. But my main point is.... is why are you even talking to me?!?! As a guitarist I admire the great Les Paul....So go back to playing World of Warcraft, and listening to Justin Bieber.
And what the hell is "lol"?!? Is that some sort of dork slang?
@thesicilianguitarist LOL You're such a goddamn loser dude. I play World of Warcraft and listen to justin bieber? Yeah right. Go fuck yourself with a club covered in razorblades you needle dicked twat.
@BigBossInc Hey man... fuck you...fuck your "LOL", and fuck your face...you little pussy ass bitch. Where do you live? When I come back to the US we can talk face to face.
@thesicilianguitarist Yeah, you're acting like a child. Telling people they should have cancer and throwing around insults just because they disliked a video. You act so tough but I bet you're some scrawny 80lb kid behind a keyboard. And for your information, I live in the UK.
@thesicilianguitarist You're a bitch. Crying over the internet over a fucking video. Acting like you're tough, I know you're some scrawny 90lb piece of shit with nothing better to do than talk shit on the internet. Go back to playing WoW you fucking loser.
@BigBossInc Shut the fuck faggot I don't play WOW. I play guitar and play with your mom. I bet your little BigBoss faggot ass wouldn't say shit to my face.
@thesicilianguitarist Oh I would, because I don't have to fear some internet faggot who talks shit out of his ass. I could totally kick your ass, you don't even fucking know.
take your fight somewhere else, retard. Neither one of you could fight your way out of a wet paper bag-- tough talk on a webpost! Oooh,,, we all shake with not an ounce of fright.
You and that other idiot silly-girl-guitartist are 2 of the biggest wet beds who ever posted. So shut up and why not reassess why you're on this site in the first place.
@PS3Gamecore: But you can buy a new one that looks exactly the same, plays every bit as well, sounds every bit as good for a couple of thousand dollArs. The old ones aren't "worth" $30K, you just have sheep loads of non-playing nerd guitar collectors with money.
@BigBossInc This is '50's Pop music not "Rock." It's not in a 1-4-5 progression, a prerequisite for that genre. There wasn't any "Rock" in the fifties, it was known as Rock and Roll.
"Song in Blue" was released as a purple label Capitol 45, 45-13229, F3015, b/w "Someday Sweetheart", published by Iris-Trojan Music Corp. The song was composed by Les Paul and Mary Ford. The record reached #17 on the Cash Box singles chart in 1955.
Coooooooool is the word to describe these two (tho Les sounds like he just drank a quadruple latte...). Mary's voice is bewitching! There were a number of cool ladies around this time (mid-'50s)...June Christy, Kay Starr, Peggy Lee...and Mary! Coooooooooooool...
@chkjns 1954 was the year of release for "Song in Blue". The Capitol single entered the US Cash Box charts in January, 1955, peaking at no. 17 and staying on the charts for 8 weeks.
@scottp02 - This was not a tv clip. Soundies were like a video jukebox. Pay per view is nothing new! We all thought music videos were 'new' in the 80s. Wrong! I just learned about soundies recently myself.
