says the man that knows taylor made is watching lol nice video.. I thought they were for better shots on off center hits ? the 15 yard sweet spot scares me
This is the best review to these clubs to me. I want to get the Burners next season but I don't know yet il just have to vet out there and hit some demos
I have hit both the Diable driver and Razr X irons at the PGA Demo day and Golfest in Tampa. The equipment is excellent. I have a Razr 2 hybrid in my bag at this time. If you hit the sweet spot of any brand name equipment, you will have great results. What I love about the Burner 2 irons is the soft feel and added distance with the irons because of the technology...I'm gettin' older and a little long in the tooth! Make sure to take a look at the Burner 2 review. Jamie
Great review! I'm 18 and just got fitted for these Taylormade Burner irons. I tested the 8 and 6 irons my swing with the 8 iron was 88 mph and went 163 yards.
Funny thing about "hitting the irons longer"... When they make the shafts longer and strengthen the lofts like they do and just stamp a 7 on what is really a 6 for other companies, it makes it HARDER to hit. Less loft = increased sidespin = increased chance for misses. You've still got to make a nice inside pass and hit the center of the face. Good marketing though, the increased distance thing.
I thought these clubs were solid, but not in my top two. He compares these to Callaway, but Callaway makes the worst clubs in the business. I tested all these clubs in this class. Mizuno is the way to go imo. I also think the Titleist A 1,2's are far superior to Taylor's comparable clubs. Basically from my personal standpoint I think Mizuno and Titleist are the best. I wouldn't piss on a Callaway if it was on fire.
have you tried the new burner 2.0 irons? I was wondering if there is a difference between the two because i dont know if it is worth the $200 to buy the 2.0s over these?
Most of the testing was with range balls (Pinnacle). All the manufacturers make good balls now, and if you read the specs on the ball sleeves or box, they do perform as rated, so any ball you like will work well with them. There's a video I've done about balls for more info.
Jamie
P.S. Next month look for a review/test of the new 2.0 irons from me.
he is spot on with these irons, i just bought a set moving from some cleavlands, the 4 iron was much better but the higher irons were just about the same...
@helenathena Yes and no. The wedge through 7 are "standard" if there is such a thing, and then, in addition to longer shafts, they got stronger going 6-3.
This video was great! I enjoyed watching your club test and analysis, and I have actually booked a test date for these clubs. Thanks for the good opinion and recommendation.
this is a really noobish question but these arent the same as the burner plus's are they? If so would the burner plus's be a good set of irons for a new player like me?
@805guido The differences in club technology are very minor and have more to do with marketing. I always recommend field testing the clubs for performance. Then go with the best feel and the best deal!
@fade7foul yeah the lofts are stronger but the burner irons are incredibley easy to hit with still some workability....if you needa work tthe ball that much you shouldnt give a SHlT about this video. the marketing is tricky but still excellent clubs
I play with a set of HiPPO clubs from the 80s i think lol (all i know is they are handmedowns lol). I have been looking around as i am going to get a new set and i saw this... But i also like the nike victory reds, could you please e-mail me what is better??? Or even other people comment. Cheers
@TheFinneyBoy My philosophy is always this: Hit the clubs, side by side and check these things: distance, trajectory, feel (release of club head) and looks. Whichever club gives you the qualities you want, go with. And look up the specs as far as loft degrees. You might find TaylorMade is less loft for distance than Nike, so this is also a factor. Bottom line though...they all make good equipment, so it really is personal preference! Jamie
The reason the clubs felt heavier when you swung them, but not when you weighed them, is because the swing weight is different between the two. Swing weight and club weight are not the same.
I still love my X-14s and have no real reason to change. They are an excellent standard in quality irons, and are extremely forgiving. However, I love my Burner TP and Rescue too. Play with what works.
I had 6.0 project X shafts installed from Taylormade and when I had them measured they were from a 6.4 to a 7.3!!!
It doesn't matter what the shaft says on it. Stiff, Regular, etc.....It's just paint or a sticker on a shaft. It means nothing and now I'm convinced of that.
BUT THE HEADS ARE AMAZING! I just hit the new R9 TP irons and they are equally as good. Thinner top line and less offset that I love too!
yeah but idk why anyone would buy the R9 TP irons. They have the new V Grooves. And if your not on tour why would you want to put yourself at a disadvantage.
The quality control on their shafts is horrible! And it's not just Taylormade.....it's all the major companies.
I even went through their custom fitting down at The Kingdom.
Get your shafts checked by a custom fitter that will measure your shafts in front of you after they install them to make sure the shaft flex matches. I guarantee nobody has the correct flex in their entire set.
Great. Make sure you're comfortable with the shaft flex. Because Callaway does a "medium stiff" shaft, that's where the timing differences come in. If I still have any problems squaring up the irons (without having to get "handsy" I make talk to them about regular shafts.
Thanks for the reply. I finally decided I'm going to go with the Burner irons. I have an appt at the Taylor Made Performance Lab next month. I can't wait.
I play the Taylor Made irons about half the time. The shaft is slightly stiffer than my Callaway irons, so under pressure my timing is slightly different. Next month when I return to Florida and have full range access I plan on making the switch full time, to gain the distance benefits.
Very curious as to what your thoughts on the Burners vs the Callaways are now. Also, if you can give your yardage per club. You said something like the shorter irons pw, 9iron) went the same distance but at what iron is there a difference and what is the difference? Great video. I'm considering going from X18s to Burners.
I was comparing to my Callaway X14s, but have demoed the Taylor Mades every year at their media events. If you want to hit long irons rather than rescue clubs then I would endorse getting them. If you have the money and want a change, than again, don't hold back. If you are happy with what you play now, than hold on to them and wait for discounting by TM in the future on the Burners. ALL the hardware is good stuff.
Just got a set of 09 burner irons delivered yesterday! Love them, after just one round! Could not recommend them enough. I am a 17 handicapper and suit me perfectly got mine at a really good price on gimmugolf (dot) com after shopping around and even bartering at my local pro shop.
i have played taylormade clubs all my life and i still have my r7 irons from a couple years ago and i find i hit them just as consistently as i do the burner irons, a diffenence in performance
the callaways are outdated compared to the burners.the callaway steelheads are not as nice.plus the technology the put under the burners will make you hit way farther than the callaway steelhead.look up the callaways and you will see wat i am talkin about in looks
Oh, ok. the Callaway Steelheads aren't even sold from Callaway anymore. What about the Callaway X-22 Irons/Diablo Irons/FT Irons compared to the Taylormade burners. Are the Callaways better?
um i didn't even know that they made diablo irons but the callaway x-22's are really good i would say they might even be a little better than the burners as for the ft they have a bigger price tag thats it so if ur a callaway guy i would go with the x-22
The ball flying 15 yards further for a sweet spot hit is not good... image you're 100 from the pin and water over the back, you hit the sweet spot and you're going for a swim. Well, i guess it's only a bad thing if you are a high handicapper that only hits the SS a few times every round.
One comment that may save you some time in future testing. This is tough but if you use a range ball to compare any club COR is not going to be as pronounced because the range balls are much harder than what most will take out to play.Alot of hype is put into anything marketed, golf clubs cars etc. But,playing with a quality ball will give you much better feed back on technology improvements.U wouldn't test drive 2 cars on a deadend street.
great job - any news on the older Taylormade Burner HD irons. They have yet to drop i price but I hear these are great performers in terms of forgiveness and the TI face really improves distance.Anyone out there,I would appreciate any info.
I also play the X-14's, but i am looking to change. I was actually considering the Burner's. I am definitely going to demo them. Thanks for the video very informative from a player's point of view.
