Barbra Streisand sang this on her "Color Me, Barbra" album a few years later. Still, I like Kitty's version and remember listening to it during my high school days in early '60's when it came out.
@NavyBob1965 Agree, no one like Kitty's version. Just beautiful. It was also when I was in HS in the old country when it came out, we didn't have the means to listen, yet we found this beautiful song. Thanks for posting.
With all the R&B all over the place, I never associated this song with the 9th Ward (I grew up in New Orleans). I do like this tune, so check it out: Sandy Stewart's version 1962-63, peaked at #20 in '63. Streisand's version (single) released '62 from her "Second..." LP, never charted, re-released as a 'B' side '65, didn't chart then either. This is the definitive chart version may people will remember as it peaked at #18 in 1962. Thank you for this post - great tune & made me think. DAVEDJ
@Multi1628 It has nothing to do with the 9th Ward. Otherwise I would have put it on my regular channel, 9thWardJukebox. Please note the AnX at the end of this channel. This channel is for stuff from around the world dat either I like or hate.
I wasn't sure which version I had when I was 12 back when this came out in early '63. But as soon as I heard the harmonica between Kitty's phrases, I realized that this was the one. I haven't heard this since then! How beautiful! Thank you for posting this.
@9thWardJukeBoxAnX I hear you. It was on the charts as well in New York City. It almost seems as though Barbra Streisand's version, which I don't ever remember hearing on the radio, became the definitive version for whatever reason. Perhaps her enduring popularity over the years helped the situation.
@singinjohnny Streisand recorded it in Nov. 1962 but I agree, I don't think Babs' version charted nor do I recall hearing it back then either. Kallen's version was also released in 1962 but must have also been in the latter part of the year because it peaked at #18 in 1963 on billboard's pop charts. This has to be one of the most overlooked and forgotten great songs (version) from the early 60s.
Song was written by Fred Ebb(RIP) and John Kanter( age83). They were mega writers with many musicals ( Cabaret and Chicago) . Song was released in 1962 to both a young Barabara Streisand and Kitty Kallen. The Kitty Kallen version is the best in my opinion both in interrpretation and arrangement. The original Streisand version went nowhere. Kitty's version reached #18 .She was 40 when she recorded it. She cascades from note to note with amazing clarity and depth of emotion as few could ever do.
When Bob Hope was asked who his favorite singer was that sang his theme song he said it was his wife. I believe she danced with the Ziegfeld Follies for a while. As for the Mike Douglas song it is in my favorites and I will admit to sheding a tear or two when listening to it. Rose Marie had a top 10 rated radio program . Voice was 5 years beyond her young age age but became graveled later on. Just watched a You Tube " Kiss Me Sweet ' Kitty Kallen video done in 1949. It's cute & worth watching.
Doris Day and Margaret Whiting are the other 2 stillliving. I once sponcered autograph shows and my list is of the past is getting smaller. Jane Russell, Rhonda Fleming and Margaret O'Brian are amongst the few living ones. I , like you think Kitty's version is EASILY the best. This old crusty guy had tears in his eyes listening to it.
@hajune I'll never admit to that no way. You remember Mike Douglas's "The Men in My Little Girl's Life? I won't admit any emotional fluid to that neither!
@hajune Of all the versions that I know of this song, I've always felt this was a winner by a landslide. It's nice to know she's still around. Due to the nature of the 3 channels I have, the artists are usually depressingly deceased. (I'm not sure if that came out right but I think you know what I mean. BTW, you can't leave us hangin' like dat, who are the other 2 still living?
@9thWardJukeBoxAnX Here are a few more but not necessarily big band singers. Nanette Fabay, Deanna Durbin, Betty Garrett. Delores Hope( 101) was a great singer believe it or not, Kay Starr definitely big band, Patty Andrews how could I forget her, Rose Marie from the Dick Van Dyke show was an amazing child singer and had her own radio progam from age 8 to 12,( on you Tube) and from England Vera Lynn. I think I got them all unless we want to include Kitty Wells. Mitch Miller is 99
@hajune Delores Hope??? WOW! Never knew she sang. Rose Marie is another shocker for me. I will definitely scope out those videos. Thanks for the info. Fascinating.

This old favorite was a hit the same year I was graduated from college.
Shortly before some English group visited the USA. What was their name
anyway?
Tnx 4 posting.

Kitty's version of this song is the best by far. She has a beautiful voice, and singing this song, there is a haunting sadness to it.

@singinjohnny You're welcome. It was a big hit here in New Orleans and I am surprise as to how forgotten this version has become.

@9thWardJukeBoxAnX Exactly. I recall buying the record as my Mom liked it too. This was the beginning of '63. So the time is right on target.

Sound and style similar to Patsy Cline . Kitt y Kallen is 88 and only one of three pmominant female stars still living from the big band era .
