Thanks for the kind words. I have not recorded the song other than here on youtube. It was recorded by the late guitarist, Tommy Jones. I'm not sure if the cds are still available.
Tommy's version of Bill Piburn's song is absolutely wonderful. I hope you can find a copy.
That was excellent. It is interesting that Tommy Jones would rearrange a Bill Piburn guitar instrumental. Makes you wonder what he didn't like about the original arrangement.
Thanks to all. Oldwhitman, Tommy and Bill were very close friends and I'm sure he had Bill's blessing when he did the arrangement. Tommy had pretty big hands and it's possible that he used some chord positions that were different from Bill's . I had to change a few of the chords because I couldn't reach them the way Tommy voiced them.
I'm sure he loved Bill's song because he took the time to arrange it and record it twice. The last version was with
Jonathan Burchfield has a lot of the feel that Tommy had as does Doyle Dykes. Well, we all tried to help Tommy in our own way, but it just wasn't good enough. Tommy had a gift of great coordination. I remember we went golfing one time and he had just been in a car accident and was hobbling around the course. Despite that, he would nail the ball perfectly. There was something in his head that gave him that virtuosos edge of course along with a lot of hard work in his younger years.
I booked Tommy a few gigs and had the opportunity to hear him play that song in Nashville, Minneapolis and Valparaiso. Excellent job! You really caught the essence of Bill's work and Tommy's feel. Thanks for great music Bill.
Tommy was a master. I loved Chet who influneced Tommy. Tommy was deep, introspective, reflective, and technical. Glad I got to meet him a few times at CAAS before he died. He was sickyl and took poor care of himself. Died way too young.
Thanks for sharing that. You are both brave and modest. I was a personal friend of Tommy's for the last 26 years of his life and made a number of cassette and video recordings of him at his home in Old Town, FL so I knew what he could do.
This wasn't like trying to play his version of "Orange Blossom" but it involved going beyond the mechanics and you did a good job of adding feeling to it.
It also looks like you're playing a Godin like Buster B. Jones has performed with.
Thanks. Bill is a great player and writer. I learned the song from the late Tommy Jones, a friend of your dad's and mine. He showed me the song on one of my visits to his home in old town, fl. Obviously, I can't play it as well as those guys, but I really like the song and enjoy performing it.
