  • better quality then netflix! :D

  • I think Gaskell was a genius. She understood people so well, and wrote this beautiful, complex stories where people are just so REAL and there is always at least one character for us to admire and emulate. As AMAZING as this movie is, it doesn't even come close to the book. But I seriously love the movie anyway!

  • Been in that factory, a couple of miles from my old house, and it's noisy as hell. Nowadays you get headphones for "health and safety".

  • I wonder what the ratio of women to men watching this is?

    my guess is 100:1

  • @MKisinthebuilding is that meant to demean it.

  • @MKisinthebuilding Im that man!!! hahaha But dont think im either soft or queer hahaha I just want to keep my English up since my major is English. Posh and old-fashioned language, but charming at the same time.

  • I don't know if im a freak or anything but something about shows from a different era are so romantic and I JUST PLAIN LOVE THEM!!!! They make me feel better after a long day, don't u think? Thumbs up if u agree!

  • @MissAngryNerd I know! I totally agree! I hate romance, it bores me to tears, and I only ever watch sci fi/ action / fantasy movies...BUT...if the romance is occuring between a woman in a bonnet and a man in a tailcoat... I LOVE IT!! :D That's what's so brilliant about them!

  • I JUST LOVE THIS NOVEL. THE ADAPTATION IS REALLY GOOD. THANKS FOR LETTING US WATCH IT.

  • We can find almost everthing here.... I enjoyed so much to watch it... my favourite after pride and prejudice (BBC)

  • Is the book good? I want to read it..

  • @heartbreaker23jojo YES!!! i actually loved it so much I bought it :) The book is excellent in explaining the thoughts and feelings of Margaret and Mr. Thornton, plus all the other characters of the book. Actually once you read the book and come back to watch this again (which you should!), you'll understand the motives of each character better. Enjoy this movie and read the book!

  • @heartbreaker23jojo i'm reading it right now, and i think IT'S REALLY GOOD! please read it :)

  • Anyone here who have read the book it is based on?

I am i the middle of a projekt about the Industrial Revolution in England. One of the questions is how the conditions was for the working class in that time.

I have decided to you North and South as reference, but i don't have time for reading the whole book - there fore it would be very nice if someone could tell me a good chapter, where these conditions are described, so that I can analyse it!

Hope to hear from anyone soon!

  • @Valdemarellegaard well im reading the book now and it seems pretty accurate so far

  • @Valdemarellegaard How can you write a proper project without reading the whole book? Besides, Mr Thornton is just as terrific in print as he is on the screen.

  • wheels on fire rolling down the road!!! i can't believe its saffy from AbFab

  • Thanks for sharing. I love this drama very much..have to watch it on youtube while I watch for it on the mail :D

  • It took the intro to make me realize how much I miss this, marathon! ;)

  • Love Love Love North & South.... Will watch it over and over again....

  • omg,, I cant believe , I'm watching this. I got the novel North and South as a prize at some competition at school.. today i randomly searched about this novel and t my surprise ,, there's a full fledged tv series based on this novel.. can't believe it...

  • so happy to have found this, greatful!

  • Rubbish compared to the novel !

  • @amyinwonderlandful actually I like this better than the book. Love What they did with Hiegins and Fanny.

  • youtube is the best thing that has ever happened since chocolate

  • @ingleward Hahaha, i was feeling super down and depressed so i came to watch my favorite movie... then i see your comment and i immediately laughed. Thanks :D

  • @hawiiandelight

haha :D :D i am very glad to have done that for you :)

  • This is very British! I love it.

  • @vegetables88

    Sorry to hear that. 

  • one of my favorite period dramas along with pride and prejudice!

  • just broke up with my boyfriend, and my immediate response: ice cream, hot bath, and north and south... I already feel better! :)

  • Does the music remind anyone else of Fable.LOL

The video game made by lionhead studios.??

  • god I love youtube you can find anything, thanks

  • Does anyone else find this film disappointing? Armitage does his best but I found Denby-Ashe detached and one dimensional. Verbal sparring is absent and I don't feel the chemistry between the two leads. A badly tailored script. The cast did their best with what they had, I guess.

  • @Baskettono no one agrees with you haha :P

  • @Baskettono I actually found it QUITE the opposite! I found them great together, perfect and beautiful! This is my favorite movie ever!

  • Become a fan of the movie on FACEBOOK!! -- ''north & south movie series''

  • 12 people must have been looking for the other "North and South." Or they're angry that there is no appearance by their favorite heart-throb in this part.

  • I love this series so much i have decided to watch it again and after this is over im going to watch it again :) Richard Armitage <3

  • Just finished reading the book, and at the risk of being abhorred, I will obstinately say that I prefer the series.

  • Become a fan of the movie on facebook: - ''North and south movie series''

  • to be honest i prefer the military part of North and South although the complex relationships keep the seires alive and I guess that what makes this Story so addictive.

  • @lalala13nhc has he put down book two....

  • 3:01 Sherwood forest!!! Where is Gisborne?

  • CHARMITAGE <3

  • @alexandrabak yes me too! Love reading the comments!

  • I wish I could do my hair like Margaret, it's so pretty!

  • Is This Good I Don't Know Whether To Watch It?? :)

  • @ImLuvinItxx if you interested in period drama then it´s really great

it´s not the same stil like jane austen dramas....but it´s worth to watch :D

  • I thought the last time i commented here there will be no follow ups comments anymore. Seems a lot of people really loved this period drama and yes I do. I have it downloaded for easy watching rather than in directly in youtube as it does not play continuously , it stops then play again. I watched this for the nth time already. it's a feel good move.

  • the music in the beginning is so perfect for this movie....it suits so good....

  • I love this period drama and all because of MR. Thornton i first watch this on netflix but i didn't like the LQ of the video at least here it's a bit clear. Thank you for uploading it.

  • @alexandrabak You made me smile. I would rather share in peoples opinions too :).

  • Es muy bonita :)

  • Es muy bonita :)

  • I might sound a bit cheesy, when I say this, but I prefer to watch the series on youtube rather than watching in on DVD.

The DVD does not have nice comments, like-buttons which I like to click on ten times even if I already clicked on it, and fellow Mr. Thornton fans :)

  • @alexandrabak i thought I was the only one :) I just prefer watching it on youtubeand comment on your favorite parts.

  • @alexandrabak So true!!! I love reading everyone's comments!

  • Show of hands, who's watching this, at least in part, for Richard Armitage?

  • @englishfrenchgerman of course. :)

  • @englishfrenchgerman heck yes!

  • @englishfrenchgerman lol ever1 is lol

  • @englishfrenchgerman

'in part'? hahaha I'd say he's the MAJORITY reason! :)

  • @muddysneakers I bet there'll be at least one person who's watching it for the performances of Tim Pigott-Smith and Sinead Cusack

  • Why is the beginning so "choppy"? It skips a lot of scenes and I always thought Dixon was a skinny but sharp old women like those head maids you see in movies. I personally enjoy the book more! It is AMAZING!

  • Comment removed

  • this is my third time watching this!!!! i love this!!!!

  • Thank you to the person/persons who compiled this playlist. I hadn’t seen this series (nor even heard of it) and I enjoyed it immensely. I watched it while I was rearranging my furniture and it made the task much more pleasant. Thank you again!

  • what we had watched this movie ....

  • I bought the DVD but I got quite disappoited in the swedish subtitles. FOR GOD´S SAKE USE AN TRANSLATOR WHO HAS KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY AND DOESN´T USE SLANG-WORDS. When the say they are going to call on an person IT DOSEN´T MEAN THEY USE THE TELEPHONE.!

  • @polara1se Gee, was that how it was translated? My deepest sympathy goes to you, lol.

  • You've saved my life. I can't wait to buy the dvds, but in the meantime... ^.^

  • @genia106 - this is wonderful!!!! Thank you

  • With all of today's bridezilla crap, themed weddings, blah blah blah... the idea of walking to the church on a nice day to get married is refreshing

  • this is truly a masterpiece. i keep on rewatching this!

  • I honestly have no idea how many times I've seen this film. I saw it on here a number of times, then bought it on dvd and it's been basically on loop ever since! I will never tire of it, favorite movie of all time!!!

The storyline is wonderful... and Mr. Thornton doesn't hurt either ;) RA FTW!!!

  • LOVE RICHARD ARMITAGE <3

  • @ZukosPrettyPrincess YESSSSSSSSS <3

    Finest. Man. Ever.

  • @ZukosPrettyPrincess lol,who doesnt?

  • i enjoyed the books and i loved this!

  • I like these types of drama, do you guys recommend any other ones for watching?

I like to watch many more of these classical dramas over the summer. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you

  • @wonderlady123

The older verison of Pride&Prejudgice! with Colin Firth~ <3

    it's long but amazing C:

  • @ChocoChoco1310: I saw it, any other ones that is none jane austen works?

  • @wonderlady123 Watch Wives and Daughters, it's also on youtube and is based off of another of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels. Really good.

  • @wonderlady123 The Austen adaptations are always good (yum Colin Firth) but they are too sickly-sweet for me.

The 2008 BBC adaptation of Tess of the D'Urbervilles with Gemma Artenton in was fantastic, also the Dr Zhivago ITV version from a few years ago with Hans Matheson and Keira Knightly was amazing too (but be prepared to cry). Also watch: Vanity Fair, Rebecca, Middlemarch. A History of Tom Jones and Moll Flanders are also very good and very funny but some people don't seem to like them!

  • Has anyone seen or does anyone know anything further about the musical of North and South? Having looked at its website I should be pleased to hear anyone else's views on the subject.

  • I love the music in the beginning of this film!

  • at first i thought that margaret wasn't pretty enough, but i was so stupid! she's gorgeous!

  • Just noticed it's the cut version... Love it anyway!

    :-)

  • Man, so few comments about Daniela Denby-Ashe!

And Mr Armitage looks really handsome, so I think the producers got what they were looking for? *sarcasm*

  • the SOCIAL CODES OF GREAT BRITAIN DURING THAT TIME AND THE TIME BEFORE WAS SO RIGID. i WOULD NOT SURVIVE 2 MINUTES IN THAT TIME PERIOD

  • Second time watching this =)

  • Wow. Listen to the music - it's really haunting and eerie, with the woodwinds, and then the strings are a little more hopeful and adventurous. So pretty!

  • @eacans nice, i'd be really surprised if you still had a girlfriend after a sweet little comment like that

  • @freakybrowneyes7 I'm the girlfriend... or rather the ex-girlfriend. Only now noticed his sweet little comment, and how appropriate that I'm watching N&S after our break-up. :P

  • @serenoli It was a joke....given that freakybrownyeyes7 got 36 likes for her comment just goes on to prove my point, too many sentimental women here....

  • @freakybrowneyes7 you ruined me woman, you ruined me!

  • @eacans Such a gay comment.

  • @eacans So no old and pregnant women here, please, ;)

  • What is the classical musical piece playing when they are dancing on the wedding?

It's not among the soundtrack songs I think...

  • I fall in love with the music right at the beginning. So deep and peaceful. I redo hundred times. Do you know what kind of instrument was that? Violin or mixed?

  • I imagined Henry Lennox quite a lot more handsome than this.

  • @loveydovey1ful the actor also starred in a movie called "Dresden" and was styled altogether differently - must say he looked much more handsome that way... here they dyed his hair this unnatural reddish brown.

  • Thank you for posting this!!!

  • I FLIPPIN' LOVE THIS MUSIC.

  • How many episodes are there???? Only four? I remember watching it as a child for a long time.

  • Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe were perfect for the roles! :)

  • I have watched this mini-series a multitude of times of the years, and I can still watch it over and over again and will never get sick of it. I just read the book for the very first time, and I found that the series doesn’t give the book justice. Mind you I absolutely love the series, especially Mr. Thornton. Keep still my beating heart! <3

  • @superqueenofthenile Actually, while the book added a lot of depth and detail the movie lacked (as usual), I prefer the movie's ending. The ending in the book wasn't nearly as passionate. I *do* love the book but I find when I read it, I come straight over to YT to watch the movie's ending. That scene is just wonderful. I agree with Richard Armitage's commentary on it (it's in an interview posted somewhere on YT).

  • @kensmom33 try amazon. they seem to have everything. i had a look and it was around £5.00

  • @lindamas1 **I do appreciate all your efforts, I really do, but I wish that the film was on the wide screen as most of the scene is cut out when this box version is used.

  • por favor sabe onde encontro com legenda em portugues essa serie. obrigada

  • If you like this movie try Lark rise to candleford or Downton Abbey

  • I don't know if you like Charles Dickens but you might like Our Mutual Friends it's very in depth and romantic.

  • I love this so much, it's so good and Richard is so handsome.

  • Margaret is such a snob when she rejects proposals lol...she doesn't even let them finish!!

  • What is Henry's relation to Margaret's family?

  • @boya307 he is the brother of her cousin's husband.

  • @boya307

I think he's friends with Margaret's brother, can't quite remember though...

  • @boya307

henry is Margaret's cousin, Edith's husband's(capt. lennox) brother

  • the music just takes my breath away <3

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

I adore this wonderful classic...So romantic too :)

  • Can I just ask, is ITV under BBC?

  • @EverlastingxHope Do you mean, is ITV owned by BBC? No, they are separate channels in the UK. ITV is commercial (supported by advertising during programme breaks) & BBC is funded by the license fee that every home has to pay.

  • @tfifriday1

    Oh I see, thanks! :)

  • FOR ALL YOU FIRST TIME VIEWERS - The first part is a little boring but stick with it. it is one of the best! sweetest! loveliest! movies ever!!!!

  • @luvsbooks95

I watched this first part and thought it'd be boring so I wanted to just ditch it. Not until I saw your comment. And so.... THANK YOU :D I'm rewatching this for the third time now!

  • @EverlastingxHope glad i could help! =D

  • @luvsbooks95 a little? xD But I will continue since I've seen the trailer and this movie looks soooo romantic♥

  • @luvsbooks95 Agreed! I remember when my friends made me watch it during a sleepover. The first disc I almost slept through, and then after the second disc, I was jumping up and down telling them to put the next one in!

  • @luvsbooks95 thnx for da heads up! :-)

  • @luvsbooks95 I just finished the book and it was fantastic. The ending seemed a little rushed but it was perfect in a way..

  • @luvsbooks95 most definitely! <3

  • @luvsbooks95

...ok i believe you and gonna try it...

  • BBC is the best channel tv in the world ,

  • So if you've watched all: Sense & Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, Pride & Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, you can also try watching the following: 1. Becoming Jane 2. The Buccaneers - although it's somewhat different. 3. The Inheritance 4. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall 5. Little Dorrit 6. Bleak House 7. Wuthering Heights 8. Little Women - also a bit different. 9. Cranford 10. Return to Cranford Also: 11. Oliver Twist 12. Great Expectations 13. Hard Times
  • @aleksandrina87 where can u see hard times? i tried searching for the movie but nothing came up

  • And of course you all know about Cranford, thats also Elizabeth Gaskell.

  • Wives and Daughters is excellent, i have that on DVD, but i also recommend Anthony Trollopes The Barchester Chronicles, Alan Rickman is supurb in that.

Charles Dickens Bleak House is also worth watching.

  • thank you so much. when my mother was a child, she watched the movie the first time and never again. and finally after years of searching, she found it.

    Thank you so much!!!

  • God, I just got done re-watching the SUPERB 2006 version of Jane Eyre and now I'm re-watching North and South again! I love period dramas and no one does it like BBC!

  • I heart NORTHANGER ABBEY !! Watch it !

  • this is like band of brothers

  • @OminousYearning

    Have you tried Wuthering Heights?

  • thank you lindamas1...i can't believe i found this 6 years after! it's breathtaking and sadly i am now completely lost in richard armitage...i am on to spooks series 7 :)

  • @RoxiiGx Yeah she is!

  • @RoxiiGx

    yes its the same person

  • omg the beginning when the married couple dances in circles im suprised that their heads werent spinning, mine was just by looking at them

  • Anyone that can recommend anything similar! I have watched all Jane Austen adaptations, watched Jane Eyre and a lot more I can't remember! Something else I can watch!??

  • @OminousYearning Try Wives and Daughters also an Elizabeth Gaskell adaption, it is also posted on YT

  • @lindamas1 Thanks a lot! I think I have't seen that one!:D:D

  • @lindamas1 "Our Mutual Friend", "The Way We Live Now"

  • @lindamas1 Have you been watching Larkrise to Candleford?? It's not a romance, but a BBC TV series. Based on a series of books, its late Victorian (I believe) drama that's very dear. It's on you tube. But I love North and South!!!!!!!!

  • @lindamas1 Falling for a dancer. From the book by Celine Purcell
