@atariboy84 --funny you should mention the light bar---when i bought this car in 2002 i went to a kragen or some such-found those bulbs right away-now that they're out again it's as if they never existed...the parts guys try to steer me to the #168 or #194 bulbs---not the same thing; naturally i lost the owners manual...and to tolaviator-remember that lee iacocca called these cars'flying potatoes'...
I love how the Mercury Sable and Ford Taurus were styled differently than other cars back in the 80's. Very sleek styling for cars of this time period.
@JJ9715 Many people dont realize these two cars set the trend for automotive design for the next 20 years. Cars in the late 70's and early 80's were just boxes on wheels
@bestamerica my sister has an 87 taurus, it has 295000 miles, my lumina went to 248000 miles using the bottom breather design, it doesn't matter how the air gets to the radiator, all that matters is that it does get there.
@bestamerica Its called trolling retard. If I am so "immature" than how can I use grammar correctly? lol Bestamerica is brain dead. He can barely speak english and calls himself american. lol Dumb people make me lol
I was a little kid in 80s and remember these cars with lights in the center were very striking. It was probably a good design move back then, when most people expected cars to have 2 headlights..not the entire front illuminated.
I bought a 1986 Sable Wagon two months after they hit the showroom. The shop manager, a few days later when I dropped by to get the tailgate trim damaged during unloading replaced, told me my new engine was due in that week. Turns out the first batch had faulty rings that did not expand properly and caused a little slapping (tick, tick, tick). That first year (and a few later years) were also bad for automatic transmission warranty replacements as well.
Oh...the tailgate glass would unexpectadly blow out on the 1986. Something to do with the heat from the defroster unit on the glass and the turbulence throwing rain and road slop onto the top of it. That was corrected for 1987.
ya it very well was thats why for my 1st car i got a 1987 olds calis instead of a 1987 ford tarus with 221 and the olds calis had only 91 thousand there not original k though
One of Mercury`s finest cars to date. I love the styling, both the sedan and wagon are strikingly beautiful. Way ahead of its time. Other wonderful designs are the 1987 Mercury Cougar and first generation Mercury Villager (1992-1995) with the unmistakable and distinctive light bar and cool digital gauges. I plan on buying and restoring many of these someday.
"Ride and handling of a European car." Apparently the people at Ford hadn't actually driven a European car at the time. I drove a '91 Taurus and nothing about the way the car drove felt remotely European. The front end bobbed on the highway, while the rear end felt very stiff. The steering was really vague. The brakes felt like every other American car around that time that I've driven. Nothing European about that. I do like the Taurus/Sable though.
I've had two Tauruses and this was one of the best designed cars ever. Very well thought out and highly balanced car unlike many other cars. It drives like a crown vic but handles like an escort. And my 94 wagon gets better mpg than my mom's '01 Altima 2.4 4 banger.
@keyofdavid88 ya but i hope u got ur sub frame mounts replaced. ford originally put very thin tinny mounting plates in them. if u didnt get them replaced in the recall ur whole subframe could fall out.
Whoa man, I'm getting one of these babies for my 16th birthday! So pumped!

front grille is a block and not let the cooler air to the radiator to cooler motor,,,
bad design

@bestamerica the air flows through the radiator from under the front bumper, this is how almost all cars are designed now.
