The thing that I really like about Stanton's solo's are that they are all very groove based. Never once have I seen him do a "chops showcase", or a "dig me" type of solo...ALWAYS about the groove.
@gooneybird47 Neither have I dude. But honestly that's what I dig about Stanton. It's what makes him unique. Not a lot of other drummers solo with just groove, ya know?
@gooneybird47 exactly! You don't see him showing off chops, but he is so groovy you never look at his playing and think he doesn't have a lot of chops, because his groove is just so epic!
@XSora96 Actually the guy that XSora96 linked to is extreme groovy in his solo.. I was expecting some tony royster jr. solo or something like that, but this is really good :)
@XSora96 what are you on about? you're obviously not a fan and you're obviously jealous because you will never be able to play like him. am not saying i will be able to play like him either but have some respect. he's one of the best drummers in the world and possibly ever. he has style and groove. a lot of drummers dont have that.
@gabrieloliveiramusic oh god i can go on forever with groovy bass players so ill just stop while im ahead lol.....i will ad one more my favorite mr james jamerson
@underwearmodel18 No. Most drummers play for the thrill, but if you want to be successful then you've got to be able to make money. Besides, the statement basically implies that if you can't groove, then no one will appreciate you as a drummer. Burned.
A FILL IS A GROOVE..............GROOVE DRUMMERS PLAY GROOVE FILLS............. THAT IS WHAT I TEACH ALL MY STUDENTS. Don't think of a fill as a fill..........but a groove on top of the normal groove.
@STIXAHOY No, that is not a good way to teach. A fill is a rhythmical variation from the original groove, and it's purpose is to accentuate the meter. Simply placing a groove on top of another groove doesn't provide the same accentuation as playing a fill. Yes, in some cases, simply altering the dynamics on a few notes is ideal, but in other cases, playing a complex lick also complements the music well. Either way, your playing shouldn't be based on fills, that's the point.
@XSora96 You are correct in the fact that this is not a chop based solo, and most likely wouldn't be played in front of a crowd, but this is truly what a GOOD solo should sound like. I love chops, but this is what is going to make you money. Check that motto at the top of the page, it's what we should all live by.
Went to Stanton's clinic in Sarasota, Florida last year. His drumming is really awesome, without question. Yet I especially appreciated and loved how he imparted a history of music and drum/percussion styles before he demonstrated what he was about to play to clinic students. Really put relevance and texture to how he serves specific songs and styles. Great, great experience. - Bert
There are two kinds of drummers: Those that worship Neal Peart and those that know the touch of a woman.
Groove the hell on Stanton.

@Lasmamoe If you like it, you should watch some more modern things by that man.
He is fuckin' great; I am good, but not as good as someone that drinks coffee during a one handed roll in his solo...
