I do think that the engine sound and tire noise is better in pole position then in Enduro, but Enduro had better gameplay. the car you are driving does look better in pole position then enduro as well.
pole position has a bigger play field and better graphics for the player car and street. but enduro is better, yes (we had enduro in the 2600 days, not pole position) :)
I think you are being a little hard on the game. Granted, it's no Enduro, but overall it isn't that bad of a racing game for the 2600. Are you doing a blot tv tonight?
@rtrgrl78 At the end of the day, Enduro by Activision was out at the same time as this, and makes Pole Position look just plain silly in comparison. Doesn't matter what year it was... the console was capable of much better games.
@rtrgrl78 well in 1983 the Atari 2600 was already outdated but considering this is running in 128 bytes of RAM with no screen memory it looks and moves pretty good!!!
Why can't people who shows some gameplay footage on Youtube just shut the hell up ? Face it : We're NOT interested in your comments unless you really have something interesting to say. Which you don't. Sorry, it's not against you particularly, but I'm sick of the dozens of Youtube gameplay footage SPOILED by dumb useless audio comments from the uploader.
@Liam2048 This is what I do, and this is what my subscribers subscribe for. If you don't like it, go watch something else and take your attitude with you.
@Liam2048 Yeah... it's odd to see a comment like this on a channel that people subscribe to specifically to HEAR the commentary. So, face it, we ARE interested in his comments. Go complain on another channel.
You might like Brotherhood of Leet on my youtube channel - a re-imagining of WW2 dramas like Band of Brothers as if they were set during the 8 bit wars of the 1980s where Nintendo and Sega are waring nations.
I totally agree with you that this is junk... but a 5200 game would be expected to be better, as it's a more advanced system... apart from those awful controllers.
Except in almost every instance the 5200 version of 2600 games prove INFERIOR because of that God Forsaken controller.
Pac-Man looks fantastic and more than made up for the 2600 version...EXCEPT, the analogue controller made it impossible to get that accuracy and tight control so needed.
Frogger had this weird combination of push the button and jump...too weird...
But, the analogue controller did make Pole Position quite excellent to play.
I remember my brother playing this game when I was little..... I always wanted the games but when I was old enough to get my own games console it was a bit old then. But I'd love to have this game now :-)
Poor review. This version differs from most and has it's own quirky design.Given time it's initial failings become it's charms.Still play it from time to time as it's a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.
This isn't really intended as a review, just my own personal impressions on what was a very brief playing. The point of these videos is more about letting people see what games for older systems look like, and I just happen to give my impressions while playing.
As it is though, when playing Pole Position directly after Activision's Enduro, it really does come across very badly.
Yes it sure would come across badly as back then Activision's software was mostly superior to all other stuff - Imagic pushed some good stuff back then too.
It's hard to see a game in a good light some 20 years later when perhaps you havn't played it but i play Pole Position fairly often and it's great fun even with those less than flattering rough edges.
I don't know about retro nerds, but it stands to reason that if a game was bad back in the day, it will still be bad now. Being into retro doesn't make it necesary to like bad games.
I have quite a few fairly shoddy games for the Atari, and some that're bad just coz they're really early games. I won't be uploading vids of the very early ones, coz they're mostly 2 player only, and use the paddles, which I'm too lazy to dig out of storage.
ET is so common most 2600 collectors usually aquire copies of them without wanting to anyways,I have 3 copies of it, because the lots of games i wanted had the cart stuck in it
are you hanz from die hard?

@SteveBenway sorry am going to beg to differ here, Enduro may have a little better in gameplay but graphically it lets itself down, for me anyway.

I actually like the look of this. Maybe coz I'm desperate to get a racing game for the 2600

I'd strongly recommend getting Activision's Enduro rather than this.

People who are defending this piece of crap are letting nostalgia get the better of them.
I owned it and hated it back in the day too. Activision did it RIGHT and Atari failed, it really is that simple.
I'm sorry, even beyond graphics that proof is in the pudding when a 5200 game is better than a 2600 version. That's just sad.

seems like a must have for an atari game

I was perhaps a little too harsh in my assessment of the game... but I still don't like it much.

Thats understandable
sometimes people just dont like a few classics and it happens to all of us
plus you have played Enduro soooo yup
see why you hate/dislike P P

There's always emulators, but then the real thing is still dirt cheap on ebay, unless it's a "heavy sixer" woody.

i beleive a true gamer started with atari 2600 and stopped with nintendo 64. am i right ?
mignonhenne 3 years ago
In my own opinion, a true gamer enjoys games whatever system they are on. I play games on everything from Binatone Pong TV games to GTA4 on PS3.
But that's just an opnion, and everyone is entitled to their own.
