Shit, I have tried this on an emulator and sorry, but I like this version more than the NES version, it has much better graphics, I like the music better and the slight changes on level design too, sure maybe the parallax scrolling isn't that good but I can't see why since the PC Engine was much more powerful than the nes...
Oh wow. Today is the first I've ever seen of this game, but I can already tell that it's much easier than the Famicom version. That bird in 5-2 would have been the end for sure when you were stuck on that jumping segment. In general, attacks seemed to affect Ryu less. Jaquio's final form was completely different too. Other than that, I liked what they did graphically, but the music is just so completely lacking in comparison. Thanks for the playthrough. This was certainly interesting.
@Endymionsan Yeah, my main complaint is with the music. Oh and Ryu looks far less ridiculous during the cinematic scenes in the NES version. But, hey, check it out: Ninja Gaiden on the TurboGrafx16!
I'll be honest with everyone, I love PC engine, but I find the NES version better, more sound, even with better colors and graphics, to explain some strange, not know, but the game sound very angry .. hahaha. very strange! I remember the Batman return of joker NES, MEGA DRIVE is horrible, compared to the NES! I do not know how they did it ... !!
The NES version had GREAT music! Its not that this version is particularly terrible.. Its just sort of generic on some levels compared to the NES version.. I can't imagine why they didnt just use the same tunes on the TG16/PCE. 2-2 music on this version is a catch tune.. but that's about it.
Jaquio is 1000x harder here than it was in the NES version. Actually the hole game is much harder, but somehow it doesn't have the same feeling like Ninja Ryukenden for the NES + Ryu Hayabusa looks horrible in the 16bit version.
@cnh2132 i take that back. Of the 2 versions NES and PCE, Jaquio is actually easier in the pce version. It has a pattern, and if you figure it out, you can come out with no damage taken, unlike the nes version, in which he moves absolutely random and his fire attack has a homing device in it, lol.
If it weren't for the NES version, this game would've been an all time classic favorite ninja game among us.
I can actually tell what the enemies are in this version (until I saw this I assume the thing attacking in the first 2 stages was a goblin, not a German Shepperd . I don't mind the background or the music
@ForteMP3 .... you must have it already made up in your mind that no matter how good a port or remake is you prefer the NES one before you even give it a chance... you also nitpick.
@kkdecara Hold down button II and I. While doing so, press select. You'll see the subtitle on the title screen change langauges if you keep pressing select; Japanese, English, Chinese.
I meant REAL parallax scrolling (multiply layers ontop of each other) not "raster interupt" tricks... Well, maybe i'm a retard but this is still true. The SuperGrafx however has two REAL planes that can scroll indepedently. SNES has a max resolution of 512x448, turbografx 512x240, genesis 320x480. Most games on the turbograx used 256×240 mode. Most Genesis games used 320x240 mode.
You are right when you say that color wise the turbograpx kicked the genesis ass, but the SNES is superior in almost every single way, even though it "only" was able to display 400 colors at once compared to 512. I have been coding some emulators and therefore have a deep understanding how these things work. This games uses a trick to simulate a second layer by shifting some tiles in 8 pixel steps, other games used "tile/character scrolling", some games used sprites as a second layer.
Actually I own NGTrillogy and I've played these game separatelly,I can say the graphics are remarkable to the fullest given the console. But despite the music isn't nearly as exciting as NES,it isn't an 8bits tune so be gratefull.Even though there is these single detail,it's freagin hard to handle, even NES controls are easier, yet it's a hell of a game for the younger generation of gamers that wanna try games that don't suck, well here is a true jewl. :)
Yeah, I think the guy who programmed this, is the same moron responsible for the terrible scrolling in the Turbo version of Ys 3. It seems to be the same problem. I don't recall if the progammer's name were the same at the end of each game.
As for the Trilogy on the SNES, this one does look better then the SNES version of NG1, since, they really didn't update the graphics much at all on the SNES version. But, the drawback, as I said, is the terrible "paralax".
The Pc engine/ Turbograpx lacked the hardware to do parallax scrolling. Many programmers made attempt to come around that limitation, with varying results. Don't blame the coders, blame the hardware developer at NEC.
No, the way the parallax is setup for *this* game, it could *have* been pretty smooth. There are many other PC Engine games that use this exact same dynamic tile method and it's super smooth. Why they f'ed it up in this game is anybody's guess.
You´re right, this game doesn't use character scrolling like level 3 on "magical chase", which is smooth. They just shifts the entire BAT (Block Attribute Table) one step for the tiles that makes up the background. "Magical chase" is a perfect example on what can be done by some trickery with sprites and raster interupts with scroll register changes. Actually that game makes one believe that the PC engine have a second layer :)
My PC engine emulator currently runs 95% of all availably games.
What's the name of your emulator? Is 95% compatibility hucard or CD emulation included? You're name doesn't seem familiar to me of the PCE dev/emu community.
The emulator has no name yet and has not been officially released (began working on it 3 months ago).
I meant HuCard games, it has no support for CD games or SuperGrafx games yet. A funny thing is that even though it isn't omptimized yet and is written enterirely in C++, it actually is 3-4 times faster than Ootake and almost as fast as "Magic Engine". I think it can be optimzed maybe 50% more (60FPS on a P3-800Mhz ?).
Until about 3 years ago i didn't even know what a PC engine was :P
Oh my god....I didn't even know this existed. Was this on the PC Engine or an emulator? I wish you would have let us see the cinema sequences! Thanks!
@djfakt i concur. too bad this vid didn't include the cut scenes. i looked forward to those the most and i can't believe there was a code to change the text to english!
great showing of TECMO doing awesome ports to other systems... just like Capcom and Komani doing games for Famicom, PCE, and Mega Drive all in the same. I like this version of NG much better than the Trilogy version on SNES (US)
Also, i can't remember if this PCE edition had better or even had those Kick ass Cinemas. Ninja gaiden got awesome reviews back in the day because of them.
This version of the game is really nice, but the Windmill Shuriken and the boss explosions are way too loud for comfort. And I kind of like this version of the music.
I royally beg to differ on that one, had the music been remixed versions of the NES version's music, I would've definitely said that this is the better version of the game. Still, it's pretty cool to see a juiced up rendition regardless, but the original Basilisk Mine Field's music far and away blows this one out of the water.
This version is pretty but the music not as catchy as the nintendo version, also the birds do the most damage in the game, which means you couldn't manage standing still taking damage from birds. Also a lot of enemies are missing too. But thanks for showing this video though it totally awesome!
Also in this version the invicibility firewheel is not so reliable, you can still get bumped by some enemies. For instance, notice when I was playing Act 2-2 I still waited for the swordman to move even though I had the firewheel on.
The music isn't cool as the NES version. It's prettier though. See if they were going to remake this they should have stuck to the original tunes. But again this happens often when they put it on another system. Like what happen to 'Dracula X' on SNES.
Yeah though it has Tecmo's on the box cover, title and ending screens, PCE version is by Hudson. It was prolly Hudson's idea to change 97% of the music.
Nice to see this version of the game in action.I like the graphics improvement but the scrolling sure is laggy. The music is no where near the Nes music. This should have been on the Snes trilogy with the scrolling amoothed out and the original Nes music kept the way it was :p
Great run. although I see at act 6-2 you had to start over beacuse I saw the score reset. Don't worry about it though we Ninja Gaiden players have fallen to the 6-2 stage before! but over all I love this. this is my first time to the the PC verson like this. I know on the Ninja Gaiden site said something about the PC verson of the game. Now I want to find the music for the game because its tight!
I kinda liked the boss music on this game atleast it was a twist on it and the animation of Irene when the guard was holding her a million times better then what the NES could pull off the background moved kinda crazy but it was really companys back then was still learning how to work with 16-bit so i dont fault them for it great attempt.
I love this port of NG1. IMO this version sn't quite up to par with the Nes in terms of music and speed, but still great. One thing I was very disappointed with was stage 6. I was expecting more of a challenge especially from Jaquio.
Heh I was thinking that too about Jaquio. I beat the game the first time I slipped the card into the DuoR so I was shocked that it was easier than the NES. Actually I understand on the PCE he's called "The Devildoer".
I have to agree. The music for this one isn't bad, but we're so used to the original compositions that the new stuff is going to pale in comparison. Aside from that, this is a pretty sweet looking upgrade. Good work, Toneman.
im suprised that this version of Ninja Gaiden didnt make it in the Trilogy SNES game. It looks so good. Hopefuly Nintendo, Tecmo, NEC and Hudson can break a deal to bring this version on the Wii's virtual Console.
BTW, im suprised you didnt use the English option trick.
