  • the howling is waaaayy too long and looks mechanical better to move more quickly if you can't make it look completely real john landis nailed it in awil

  • American Werewolf looks better, but the Howling is more creepier.

  • the howling transformation sounds like popcorn =S

  • why didnt she just run away?

  • thats wat idve dun!!! lol!

  • haha yeah me too!

  • American Werewolf had the edge with better effects, and competent direction from John Landis. Rick Baker deserved the academy award for Best Effects! AWIL is more like a classic Universal horror in which you feel sorry for the lycanthrop, and it delivers the shocks!

  • Rick Baker won the Oscar for Best Make-up that year!

  • egg-zactly!

  • Yeah she looks mildly worried, think anyone with an ounce of sense would be running thru brick walls to get the hell out of there, top acting,NOT!

  • takes him a while to transform doesnt it, stupid 2nd generation werewolves

  • why isnt the lady running? O.o

  • ew the howling one was all bubbly. i like cgi transformations, you can do so much more.

  • the howling werewolf looks retarded O.o so does the other one XD

  • the howling transformation look evil with the smile

  • 2:49 that looks like a bloodthirsty, mutated kangoroo on steroids.

  • my vote goes to An American Werewolf in London transformation

  • personally I like the transformation in American werewolf better, but I think the werewolves in the Howling were better...and the werewolf in Bad Moon was SICK!...but that was cgi

  • van helsing

  • TOTALLY! 100% van helsing

  • long fingers on a werewolf sucks

  • yea there really nasty and crap. i like the ones in van helsing! that and professer lupin and Cursed. best transformations ever!

  • yeah me 2 but i like the new moon wolves 2

  • they both beat twilight

  • Yeah!

  • it because twilight sucks

  • yea its nasty XD

  • Damn, those lasted forever. They're pretty cool though:p

  • American Werewolf still looks the best, its a better film.

  • The Howling, hands down.

  • Both have been the all time great for me. Seeing them back to back I'd have to say that American Werewolf comes out on top. Alos LaraCroftClone good point.

  • That was awesome. Their both great. I like the howling. I liked that back then they used robotics, for stuff like that. Now they use CGI.

  • 1:32 that was freakey

  • the howling -he enjoys it.

an american werewolf in london- he don want to

  • team jacob !

  • oh man and his howl in american werewolf in london is the scariest werewolf howl ever

  • uh... why the hell didn't that lady bolt out of the room? he took forever to transform, she totally had the chance!

  • Are you a real werewolf? Join the new and REAL werewolf pack "Howling Jaws". Check out my channel for more info.

  • 1:24 lol XD

  • all that for nothing lma0o

  • Anyone comparing CGI stuff to the old school latex has to be stopped. These guys (Rick Baker, Tom Savini, Rob Bottin) can't be compared or lumped in with these new CGi horror flicks. It's apples and oranges.

  • At 1:57, what is that thing? And why is he smiling, this must hurt right???

  • AWIL looked painful and is very good, the howling.. the guy looked like he was enjoying his transformation.

  • its creepy and freak theyre bot grows

  • Both gave me boner. But...I think they should look more wolf like...not mutated monkey like.

  • lol. .

    ^_^

van helsing also has a nice werewolf transformation scenes. .

  • Girl: I wonder if I should be running away or not...hmm, let me just stand here and think about it while that guys finishes up changing shape...he should be about done by now..

  • having just seen the Howling transformation here i still think American Werewolf trumps it be being truly painful and by being brightly lit, it almost invites you to look for the join

  • Personally, I believe that there isn't a movie in existance that has perfected the werewolf transformation. But, the closest to perfection is most definately an American werewolf in London. It's just missing the tail =\

  • if i was that girl i dont think id be just standing there watching a werewolf transformation i just run the fuck out of there while hes taking his sweet fucking time transforming

  • a-freaking-men to that.

  • i think i just followed through pheeerp

  • Comment removed

  • uuumm... what was that at 1:36 was that a penus

  • I think that his ear.

  • o. tanks

  • looked like something in his back to me

    but im not certain

  • bad moon transformation was way better than howling

  • Bad moon was mostly cgi when he transformed. You can't even compare them.

  • lol 0:25 she just sits there how fuckin dumb is that

  • the howling looks funny:D

  • You have got to ADMIT....the crap CGI transformations absolutely CANNOT touch the OLD SCHOOL of latex FX and cable controlled robotics of werewolf transformations because film production companies these days wanna save cash and CGI is a very cheap way out. These old school FX costs lots of money but the realism old school FX is unbeatable!!!!!!! 1997 American Werewolf in Paris....horrible CGI FX and the werewolves looked like gorillas!

  • You got admit that Rob Bottin's effects were trumped by Rick Bakers. Time has proved Rick made the right decision to quit production on Howling to work on American Werewolf. Universally recognised as THE best Werewolf transformation on celluloid

  • Not only are the effects better in american werewolf, its a whole better directed scene. The effects are not hidden in shadows either. Its a brightly lit scene. Some of the effects in howling look great but drag on a bit

  • I think they overdid the inflatable air bladders on the face makeup for howling. Almost like they thought it looked awesome so over used it

  • lol mikey mouse :-D

  • AWIL transformation is funny and also scary. that music is very out of place lol

  • It was meant to be out of place. Watch the whole movie, it blends comedy and horror. You'll see a lot of other scenes that juxtapose the two genres the same way.

  • im scared of things, but for some reason sharks and werewolves not

  • Howling is terrifying! It looks so real ! thanks to Pino Donaggio music.

  • Dude, 1:25 creeps me out, it's like he enjoys transforming.

  • im a werewolf fan but I just have to say that at 1:24 exactly the werewolf looks GOD DAM FUNNY hahahaha i know its supposed to be scary but dam look at that face

  • As a werewolf fan, these 2 movies along with the movie, "Wolfen", help change the horror genre as far as special effects and gore in the 80's.

  • waaaaaaay better than New Moon transformations

  • haha, what transformation? you mean suddenly just becoming a wolf in the blink of an eye?

  • I like both of them, but why are the hands the first to transform?

  • I think they both fit in with their respective movies. AWIL is a little more fun, while the Howling's was much darker and more frightening.

  • the howling is way better, american werewolf in london goes to quick and in the howling he looks way more freaky while he transforms. just my opinion, bye x

  • I dunno, maybe I'm a pussy but I thought the Howling one (especially from 1:09 onwards) was actually really fucking freaky. I think it's safe to say that I'd shit my pants if that shit was happening in front of me.

  • the american werewolf in london was way better

  • jajaaj the face the face!!!

  • lol 1:24 smiling like a jackass.

  • american werewolf in london has the best transformation :D

  • I would watched too! then run!

  • cool!

  • Seems to look like it hurts to transform if your a werewolf

  • the Howling rly looks spooky after my opinion :b they took time to show the werewolf transform :b but an american werewolf in london :b thats just grose :p didnt like it all :(

  • it looks like it hurts to be a werewolf lol

  • howling was better

  • I Think Some Of The Best Hollywood FX For Werewolf Movies are These Movies. True CGI Is Today's FX, But These Films Raised The Bar Compared To Universal's Wolfman Films Of The 40s. Long Live The Werewolf Films THE HOWLING and AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON.

  • The Howling werewolves are shapeshifters. True lycanthrope are cursed and have no choice. Lycan are arguably most powerful of all underworld creatures. Ironically of coarse with the greatest weakness, it's human side. A lycan is vulnerable in human form which is most of the time. There is a full moon for three days in every month and the lycan is only at it's full untoachable powers for one of those three days when even a silver bullet can not kill it. The rest of the time it's totally killable.

  • looked like the chick in the howling was bout to light up a cigarette and find a seat lol

  • Just wait till the wolf man comes out. Game over rick baker in the house.

  • hmm i think the howling won...

  • the howling transformation sucks.

  • The Howling werewolves are different from the ones in AWIL. They can control their shapeshifting. David was cursed.

  • american werewolf wins all the way... the howling didnt really get to my enjoyment. altho it was funny when he had that maaasive grin XD

  • I think the American Werewolf one was better and more realistic looking. Hes screaming in pain too, which makes it more disturbing.

  • @greasyfetus69

Personally I was more disturbed by the Eddie (The Howling) transformation because he was an innately evil character, and the metamorphosis reflected that. He loved being a lupine killer.

Rick Baker had a bigger budget for AWIL.

Both Bottin and Baker are geniuses, regardless.

  • Does anybody else wonder why the first guy's muzzle extends like THREE times?

  • ok well...lets see if I can explain it a bit. Although I believe it was to show off the fact that these producers and "SFX" guys could do a style like this is the main reason. But imagine your whole skull having to reshape and grow to match your animal form. The muzzle is the longest part, so your bones have to break, snap and remold to get to that point.. Thats the only way I could think of for it to go on that long. Hope I helped. ^_^

  • aawil wins

  • the howling one was pretty good but it seemed to drag on and he wasnt really showing that he was in pain, i mean have you bones distorted into a different shape must be painful.

But the american werewolf in london tranfomation also seemed to drag on and his hands looked much to long , the screaming got anyoing as well.

Other than that they were both pretty good.

    (wow that was alot XD)

  • @AliceG14

In The Howling transformation was supposed to be release on more than one level---the bestial side, unbridled sexuality, lust, and the desire to kill. The American Werewolf in London was supposed to be horrific and about pain because the character was damned.

    Totally different takes.

  • ah good point

  • I wish the film of the Howling was as good as the transformation. The only really enjoyable werewolf film I've ever seen is Dog Soldiers. Which is a total shame because werewolves are sweet as shit and deserve to be in better movies.

  • Dog Soldiers is badass!!! Although The Howling is another fave of mine.

  • the ripping the skin off in van helsing was just lazy and stupid and for people who haven't seen the Howling she was in a colony of werewolves so running at any point wouldn't have made a difference

  • Meh, the girl was so paraylzed to run away. U'd be more curious in fear to watch a man change then just run off...besides, she probably spoiled never having such issues XD Howling looked real, but American Wolf was better cept less real...so it evens it out

  • Honestly they both sucked I mean seriously how smart do you have to be to run away from the mother fucker who's transforming. That lady is dumb as hell cuz I wouldve been out that bitch.

  • Nah defiantly Howling better transformation

  • i liked the Howling transformation better because 1 it wasn't so graphic and 2 the guy wasn't screaming in agony the whole time. But OMG that must be so PAINFUL!!!

  • The Howling's transformation sucks.

  • jeez the howling transformation is good i've seen it before how come i don't remember it that werewolf looks heaps more dangerous and scary than american werewolf in london's. also is that dee wallace the chick from the hills have eyes and cujo

  • I always thought that the whole 'looking at your hand as it transforms' is getting really old.

  • u tink that Dee Wallace's character should've ran off while the guy was transforming, especially since that transformation was the LONGEST F---ING TRANSFORMATION EVER.

  • Perhaps she was paralyzed with fear and/or had nowhere to run. I think the length of the transformation added to the horror and intensity (respectfully).

  • true. even so, its still as if shes begging to die right then and there

  • I'm so glad she just had two minutes to sit there and watch that happen. Wow whatever would I do with 2 minutes to get away from a bubbly rubber face guy?

  • fuckin Mickey Mouse LOL

  • Another good transformation is in Being Human. For a TV show it's really convincing, only bad part is the finished product.

  • I don't understand it either. Her reaching for some sort of acid totally throws me off. If she's capable of doing that then she should be more than capable of turning around and running.

  • fuck that. in my opinion van helsing's was the best werewolf transformation so far. rippin skin off and everything. shit was awesome

  • CGI creatures (and transformations) are little more than glorified cartoons. Show me something more real and tangible. That's my bumble, unhiased opinion.

  • Van Helsing has some of the worst special effects of the last decade. Every character looked like it was right out of a video game and not realistic whatsover. Draclula and Dr. Hekyll/Mr. Hide were so bad it was hard to watch them. The entire movie looked like an animated cartoon with human characters in it. It's funny how primitive special effects like American Werewolf in London look 100 times better and more realistic than something that came out 25 years later like Van Helsing.

  • American Werewolf in london won a Oscar for best make up

  • I think their both good but I think AWIL's sequence has better direction. Actually it's not even a contest.

  • I never understood why the "victim" just stands there and watches and never runs away before the final transformation takes place, then it's too late. Gotta love horror movies. LOL.

  • and o ya iam 13

  • Would the best time to attack the werewolf be at the start of the transformation as it takes a little while?

  • yes

  • his got real bad acne!!!hahahaha

  • I haven't seen the Howling transformation since I first saw the movie back in the 80's. I forgot how good it was. I can't choose. They are both superb in there own way, and very similar in other ways. The techniques are very similar, this is long before computer graphics was used. Some of the shots are similar, like the ear growing to a point, the profile growing out to a snout. Those shots have since become the standard.

  • American Werewolf In London hands down has to be the best werewolf transformation it has all this emotion behind it ylou can feel his pain. Plus it looks more realistic and may I add this transformation won an Academy Award. How many horrer movies won Academy Awards,Its very rare. The howling was good but it's transformatin can't hold a candle to American Werewolf In London's transformation.

  • Hold on i thought the proper word for werewolf was Lycan.

  • Lycanthrope. Its actually a real disease, where the victim grows hair all of their body, thus where the legend of the werewolf came from. but if youre talking about underworld, yes.

  • agreed. I think the pulsating skin irked me the most, as well as the stone-like expression Eddie had.

Also, I understand being paralyzed by fear but you'd think Karen would have started running sooner or at least attempted to get away before the TF finished. Ah well.

  • if you want to see a real werewolf go to google and add dogman you will see them he is call the michigan dogman and i saw them be good or he will kill you he is god

  • The best werewolfs are from Underworld.

But as far as horror go's. The Howling was beter.

  • Gotta defend The Howling. The guy transforming has been a werewolf for quite some time, and he's a serial killer. He enjoys being a werewolf and relishes the power it brings him. That's why he's smiling. In all the other werewolf movies I've seen, the transformation is of a "new" werewolf, and they're all "OMG, I'm turning into a monster"!!11! I have to say it's kind of refreshing to see the werewolf more or less getting off on the bone-cracking transformation.

  • why is it smiling at 1:24 lol

  • amarican werewolf is(in my opinion) the best transformation ever pure perfection if you concider how old the movie is and that they didnt used any of tha play station quality CGI kids are used to now a days

ps:the 1º time I saw the film the mickey mouse made me lol XD

  • Karen White's performance is a bit cheesy. She's just standing there like "wtf where did I leave my purse?" If I saw that thing transforming in front of me, I'd shit twice and die.

Both films are classics though. Thanks for posting. :)

  • Lol the Music xD in American Werewolf xDDD

  • The Howling transformation was by far the longest and ugliest transformation ive seen.

  • The closest I've ever considered a werewolf transformation was American werewolf in paris. It's suppost to be freaking painful, not pleasurable or anything like that.

I mean come on, your bones are breaking, twisting, enlarging, elongating. Your joints are popping. Heat everywhere. Your organs are getting moved around, I mean it sounds painful.

Writers write the change right, but in all the movies they make it seem like a snap. Underworld did pretty good justice to the Lycan gene though.

  • Dude in the second one he screams and if my bones were breaking and twisting and elongating i would scream and i do

  • the first transformation takes to damn long and its a half-ass design and in the second one the poor guy looks like he's having a baby and get butt-raped at the same time.

  • Fuck you you dumb fucking kid. Those are two great scenes (though I agree the Howling's is a bit too long and half assed). The second won many awards and is better than any of your ritalin fueled CGI driven piece of shit scenes. You fucking pussy ass kids can only view things in 30 second clips on YouTube or you lose interest. I'll fuck your mom.

  • american werewolf in london is realer cause no one can become a werewolf without struggling

  • American werewolf in London was way better the howling made the guy look really really nasty

  • AAWIL defently, the fx are more realistic wit the screaming, and u gotta love the contrast of the happy music

  • Yeah....that second one does look pretty painful....and I always thought it would be cool to be a werewolf.

  • I would love to know why she never ran away. She had the time!!!

  • It's all very nicely done, but why don't werewolves ever look like wolves??

  • because there half human.

  • American Werewolf In London. No question ask about the transformation.

  • american werewolf wins just because his face didn't look like it was about to pop like a bunch of pulsating zits and it was shorter more believable transformation... and the dude had a hot body lol

  • I hate the pulsating effect in the Howling transformation... seems rather pointless. The stretching in American Werewolf, however, is amazing. It looks painful and it's well done.

Everyone keeps commenting about the girl in The Howling. You know, some people freeze when they're scared. I know I would.

  • Agreed. You'd think that most people would run,but if you witnessed something that totally defied what you knew was real, you'd be transfixed. A human version of "Deer in The Headlights" idea if you will.

  • ...transformations

  • the best thing about these movies- no cgi

  • Comment removed

  • That lady in The Howling had enough time to call 911, make a sandwich and plan an escape route while that guy was transforming!

Alot of 80's horror movies made little sense. However, many movies these days take themselves very seriously and replace fantasy and emotional aspects with realism. Because of that, current Hollywood productions are generally unimaginative and less stimulating.

So, even though many 80's movies were ridiculous and over the top, at least they were entertaining.

  • whys he all bubbly

  • Okay... the clear winner is A.W.I.L for 3 reasons. Number 1: It was shown in full perspective. Number 2: Way better make-up. And number 3: There was no bitch in the back-round looking like a dumb-ass the whole time. Suck on that Dee Wallace-Stone and the cast of The Howling.

  • The Howling transformation was like watching a bag of popcorn go around in the microwave. The first couple times it pops your like "Yeah alright!" Then after two minutes of just waiting for it you're like, "Come on and finish up already!" But the effects were pretty good. If that werewolf was smiling at me I'd piss and shit myself. Though what is up with that woman and not doing ANYTHING the entire time?

AWIL wins. I think it WOULD hurt and the music just makes it funny. Mickey Mouse FTW!

  • I have to admit I the Howling one is better than I remembered, but AWIL is still the better of the two, and a far better movie.

  • American werewolf wins hands down

  • the howling's transformation was kind of stupid.......American werewolf wins by a longshot, it's genius and both the transformation and wolf come out looking more realistic and alot cooler than that of the howling

  • The howling was ok, but AWIL was great. I liked it beacuse transformed into a wolf. Old middle ages storys of werewolfs is that they transform into a very large wolf.

  • Comment removed

  • yeah..but he turned into a wolf!...howling wolf walkin' on two legs will draw the shit right outta me!

  • "I didn't mean to call you meatloaf, Jack!/...lol..AMIL was funnier...howling is always more creepier to me!

  • Bill Schnoebelen say (and you can google the "Interview" : WHAT YOU ARE SEEING IN THE HOWLING IS REALLY HAPPENING WHILE YOURE WATCHING IT !..."

  • Bill Schnoebelen (Ex-Vampire) says that :"...The Brotherhood(In Trieste Italy) brought in an ACTUAL WEREWOLF to shoot this here seen in The Howling..."

  • I kept wondering why that lady didn't run out of the room while he was transforming. Heck, even her expression was a bit too relaxed for a moment.

  • she was fascinated.. couldn't take her eyes off it... ehehe
