Think he's got a good style for rhythm and vocals. Need to keep it simple when you're singing too unless you're particularly talented but there's no need for guitar wankery for a song to be a good song.

how can the top strings even bust if you "don't ever use em'"? why wouldn't you just pull all strings on? having all the strings on your guitar means equilibriul tension on your neck, so no neck warpage, plus you'll look less like a douchebag..
@NotNamedJones Sorry, you have no idea how and why necks are warped. The tension just has to be balanced with the force that the inner rod applies to keep the neck straight. Fewer stings or lower gauge = less tension, so wind up the rod. More tension by more strings / higher gauge, just loosen it up. No need for "equilibriul" tension. As for the douchebag comment, you're always free to have your own opinion on how he looks.

@bloodySunday77 generally never go past the 12th fret, but they're not requesting short guitars with just 12 frets. other arguments like string buzz and minimizing the amount of times higher strings are struck are pointless as well because, first of all, his guitars are well made and probably intonated correctly, therefore wouldn't buzz (low strings can buzz and have dead spots as well), it also stands to reason that someone who is a professional musician,

I like Soulfly's music way better than when Max was in Sepultura, becasue Soulfly's music is more open and rhythm wise is intense and its not super speedy like Death Metal music, but whole feel of it is intense and very aggressive, the stuff he did in sepultura sounded sterile and to be honest boring..

@Guilherme81 Max can play but he gets lazy live. he made 70% of the riffs in sepultura. especially beneath the remains. in soulfly he writes every riff and rizzo add's leads and other things on top. so you cant say max cant play. in fact i saw soulfly few weeks ago in ft lauderdale. and max played guitar on every song, at some points he was louder than rizzo. he even sang the high notes in some songs. which he usually skips lol. but yeah depends man. sometimes he gets lazy its true.

You're the joke, webbtje! Max is a legend respected and enjoyed for his music by a google of people. Thoroughly enjoyed like no other artist I've ever seen (and I've seen and met quite a few!).
When I said he comes from the old days, I didn't mention that this wouldn't be an excuse for turning into a commercial hit machine. But I don't think he aims for this. I believe he stays true to what he had in his mind when he started making music: keeping it simple and heartfelt, straight to the point, heavy, and original - without caring if it's popular or not. Nowadays it is... but other people take advantage of that. I don't think he does.

@belongin "Popular" doesn't necessarily mean it is of low quality, or even made from the start to be a hit, sell millions and make people rich. It happens a lot, but not always. And even when it does, there are times when the music is so good it doesn't really matter. As far as metal goes, it is true that it used to be more underground in the old days, but don't forget that he comes from them. I do, too. :-)

It's the same with Slash. He might not be the most excellent guitar player considering his skills. But he has a good style of playing, a way to put a driving groove in his songs and that's where it counts (at least for me).

It must be the millionth time that I say that you don't measure "talent" by how many million notes you can play per second. It's the feeling that counts. I have also been playing music since I was 8 (and I am 31), and my music education only helped me spot and appreciate talent even more.

I have been playing for 12 years, I'm not that great, but my feeling is awesome! I have a friend who has taken many lessons over the years, and he likes my feeling, and usually takes my riffs and makes more sense using theory. It's a great combo. Eitherway, music is an expression, not always a science. I agree with you.

max cavalera IS sepultura. he named them, he wrote their best songs, he had the attitude. andreas kisser shudda changed the name or something after him nd igor left...just aint the same band.
Virtuosity is over-rated. It has its place, and I enjoy intricate well-played music too, but I'll take passion and attitude
over technicality any day. There are thousands of session musicians playing in studios all over the world who are "better" than the likes of Max, but whose claim to fame will be playing rhythm guitar on some anonymous TV advert, while sneering at the likes of Max and his gold albums, adulation, fans, etc.....

Join the huge club... I wish they could be reunited... I mean, it's not impossible like Kyuss or like a band that some of its members are now dead... We've even had Cavalera Conspiracy, and that was a huge breakthrough because the two Cavalera brothers were not talking to each other for at least 10 years...
And some of his riffs are a lot harder to play than what people give him credit for.
Regardless the stuff he writes is incredible, he can write CATCHY tunes while keeping it extreme, hard and heavy and that's not easy at all. A lot of guitarists play superclean and superfast but can't write a song if their life depended on it, they've got nothing to say and they're a dime a dozen. Learn from people like Max, they're the ones who make a difference.

When I said he comes from the old days, I didn't mention that this wouldn't be an excuse for turning into a commercial hit machine. But I don't think he aims for this. I believe he stays true to what he had in his mind when he started making music: keeping it simple and heartfelt, straight to the point, heavy, and original - without caring if it's popular or not. Nowadays it is... but other people take advantage of that. I don't think he does.

@belongin "Popular" doesn't necessarily mean it is of low quality, or even made from the start to be a hit, sell millions and make people rich. It happens a lot, but not always. And even when it does, there are times when the music is so good it doesn't really matter. As far as metal goes, it is true that it used to be more underground in the old days, but don't forget that he comes from them. I do, too. :-)

It's the same with Slash. He might not be the most excellent guitar player considering his skills. But he has a good style of playing, a way to put a driving groove in his songs and that's where it counts (at least for me).

I'm listening to almost everything you can think of, from jazz to classical music to doom, stoner, greek folk songs, celtic ballads... you name it. For your information though, I don't listen to Soulfly almost at all. A bit of Cavalera Conspiracy, maybe, but when it comes to his music I'm mostly stuck in the old days of Sepultura before Max left.

It must be the millionth time that I say that you don't measure "talent" by how many million notes you can play per second. It's the feeling that counts. I have also been playing music since I was 8 (and I am 31), and my music education only helped me spot and appreciate talent even more.

Some of the best guitarists of all time were (and still are) playing just the basics. It just happens that those basics are serving and promoting the song (and eventually music) in the most unbelievable, imaginative possible way.

Yeah, man!!! Stevie never took lessons, and he was one of the best blues players of all time! Why, some may ask, because he played with feeling! I have been playing for 12 years, I'm not that great, but my feeling is awesome! I have a friend who has taken many lessons over the years, and he likes my feeling, and usually takes my riffs and makes more sense using theory. It's a great combo. Eitherway, music is an expression, not always a science. I agree with you.

Virtuosity is over-rated. It has its place, and I enjoy intricate well-played music too, but I'll take passion and attitude
over technicality any day. There are thousands of session musicians playing in studios all over the world who are "better" than the likes of Max, but whose claim to fame will be playing rhythm guitar on some anonymous TV advert, while sneering at the likes of Max and his gold albums, adulation, fans, etc.....

Ι really like Dream Theater... and the experience of seeing them live is unbelievable, especially if you are a musician yourself... I couldn't focus on admiring one thing: the song structures? the virtuoso playing of every member of the band? probably the best live sound that I had ever heard?

Max is a fucking KILLER guitarist.
And some of his riffs are a lot harder to play than what people give him credit for.
Regardless the stuff he writes is incredible, he can write CATCHY tunes while keeping it extreme, hard and heavy and that's not easy at all. A lot of guitarists play superclean and superfast but can't write a song if their life depended on it, they've got nothing to say and they're a dime a dozen. Learn from people like Max, they're the ones who make a difference.
