I agree that the model 2 looks a bit rushed in terms of its casing, though I much prefer its version of the SegaCD attachment to the original version, which was bulky.

I've read conflicting reviews that the model 3 either does, or does not work with the game genie. Can anyone out there confirm or deny this?

Sega 16 boards say it does work, other sites say no.

I know there were 2 different runs of the GG, one with a black label and another with a more colorful label. I doubt they were manufactured differently but who knows?

I know, I know,...get a model 1 or 2, ( I own a model 2 ) but I'm still curious.

@STATIKFY All the ones with the word "Genesis" in the title play Genesis games. So, yes, this console plays the same cartridges as the Sega Genesis Model 1 and Model 2. Hence the name, "Sega Genesis Model 3". Hope this helped. :D

From what I understand Truxton is not, in fact, terrific on a Super Nintendo as the SNES is most displeased that it never got Truxton on it. As such it will eat Truxton alive and turn it into Ultraman.

@jasperfoxcunningham It doesn't have a certain chip that the Model 1 and Model 2 have. Trust me though the games that use that chip are mostly awful. It's still my favorite Genesis due to the size. Also a Dreamcast Model 2 would've been fucking awesome.

@MrTatsubei believe it or not there are actually some cool games for the sega cd (can't say for 32X i don't own one). The biggest problem with Sega Cd is that those god awful full motion video games overshadowed the other games for it.

@perun1nj Earlier Megadrive games will work on a US Genesis. Some of the later games had region locking, and will not work. I have the European release of Zero Wing, and I can confirm it DOES work on a US Genesis, both a Model 1 and a Model 2. :)

The first manufacturing run of the model 3 did have stereo, after that they stripped them down to mono for some reason.

This retailed for 49.99 in late '98 and by summer of '99 they were being flogged for 19.99.

Thinking Majesco didn't make what they expected cashwise, but at least they didn't do a horrible job like the retrogen or firecore.

The model 2 does output true stereo! You said that it doesn't on both this and the model 2 review, but you're incorrect. All you need is the correct cable! Some Genesis model 3 units, however, lack stereo sound.

@jowrab No, the Mega Drive 3&4 released in Brazil were both produced by Tec Toy company which owns the rights of "Mega Drive" and "Master System" in that country. Genesis 3 was made by Majesco in the US.

Hey i recently bought a sega megadrive made by mitsui. I has 20 preloaded games and has a cartridge slot. as soon as i get a sega genesis cart to test it i can tell you if it reads carts too. I´ve searched the internet about the mitsui megadrive but didnt find anything. Sounds like an urban legend if i didnt buy it myself

I saw a Sega Genesis at the storage bins behind a good will store back in December (someone must have just dropped it off not too long before I arrived there with some goodies). I missed which model it was.

I have never seen a South America model, but I still prefer the model 2, because it works with the 32X, Sega CD, and Power Base Converter. I would still like a Master System which is still the best console of all time (NES Can't even touch the SMS!) but the games have stereo audio with the model 2 Genesis......

Sega M1 (has better sound quality, uses both 32x and Sega CD and has headphone output for stereo)

Sega M2 (smaller, lighter, thinner, uses both 32x and sega cd but has less sound quality but not to bad)

Sega M3 (no Led, can't use both 32x and Sega CD as well as those advance games like V.R. but much thinner,lighter and smaller)

Sega M3 all can do really is just play the sega genesis cart games

it lacks a essential pin to power the 32x,the virtual racing cartride,gamegenie,sms convertor,and maybe also other games wich are incompatible with it,has no input for the sega cd addon.

and since those chipsets were reduced,it,s not compatible with sms games.

this becomes very frustrating if wanne play a game on it wich does,nt work.

I had this model. The cost reductions are obvious from the get-go. Although there's a 9-pin output plug-in on the side of the casing like the model 2 , it does not output stereo sound. The very first wave of Genesis model 1's and all model 2's are the only Genesis models to have stereo sound. Also, the 6-button game controller's performance seems caught between normal and turbo speed while sifting through in-game menus. It's a cheap piece of crap, and it was sold as such.
