hello, I can't thank you enough for this vid....I do have one question...I started taking some of the trim off to take a closer look to see if I want to attempt this repair. How do you remove the key shroud? I am not sure if this is the correct term, but the black piece where the key goes in the ignition that holds the top trim piece on. I appreciate your help!!!!
I enjoy watching all of your vids, glad that you as a Ford master tech post them. Really helps guys like me who frequently work on Fords but not in a dealer. I work in local county goverment where we have a large fleet of Ford trucks. I recently did a job very similar to this one except in my case the bushings were good but the shaft & inner plunger were broken in 2 pieces each. I now see that I wasted time removing the steering wheel & then the entire column assembly to do it as a bench job.
Very nice! That may be common for Fords, but I am about to try and replace my Dad's 97 cummins steering shaft and steering gear with a Borgeson unit because the steering is terrible! This is way better than that, at least it can be fixed. My OE Ford steering is way better. The Dodge OE just seems loose everywhere! Thanks for the video!
@srmastertech I wish I could tell you. The truck was purchased a couple of days later. Not too many 1997 12 valve cummins with 97k original. I wish I would have gotten around to the combination of parts I was planning to use to see if it improved the OE setup. I was going to use a 2010-2012 T-style (solid bar across like on fords) and pitman arm, a Borgeson steering gear box, steering shaft, and power steering pump with greater volume/PSI. Was hoping the better pump would make the hydroboost.
@06dirtyblack If the shift arm is moving this much, yes, your bushings are probably gone! You want to take care of them before it rubs through the hold downs.
like the video done this repair by just replacing the bushinngs and with larger pins at the hinge points. I have replaced with salvaged parts from wreck. Great video as always love em all.

@kbeorlegui
The steering column trim cover is held in by Phillips screws from the bottom side up.

This is a simple repair and a very common failure. I remember at one time, I was doing this about twice a week!
