This song, not only is it interesting and wonderfully sung, but, the structure is so interesting by itself. No breaks, no verses, no chorus, no bridge...I love how it just flows like a heavy river. It doesn't even mount, but it does abruptly slow down at moments, like it's giving the listener a chance to breathe. It's completely amazing.
Being a new therapist myself, trying to figure out my philosophy of what kind of therapist I would like to be -I turn to this song. i feel insecure - helpless - small - but these word give me encouragement and hope. We Are all battling similar demons - We use our empathy as a template of for others, who are experiencing incredible heartache... Be present, be there, and never assume you know anothers experiencere as they do. Thank you alanis - from the age of 14, you have been my muse! :-) xoxoxo
Hmm...it is very obscure to me some parts.. well, when she says "you can't trust anyone but US".. who's that US? I think that the father begins to speak when he says "I don't know where to begin....". Before that verse, who's speaking? The therapist?
one of her best song ever, i tried to copy the feast on scraps dvd to upload here, so far i only got the mp3 music from it. the video has a little much security ,so far all the copy or cloneprograms are failing down in error
I believe Alanis is signing about her upbringing and how she talked about it with a therapist she is talking about being on the therapist "couch" she's speaking to him and to herself.
This is a very peculiarly composed song. No chorus or bridge. Very interesting. I like it a lot, as well as every other song on this album (hell, every Alanis Morissette song ever, really). I also like how she is singing in different perspectives. I'm not too sure what this song is about but I like it all the same.
@jirihuf It's actually not very clear even if you understand English. It means he only responded using photos, or possibly to photos. Perhaps the father figure used to send photos of himself by mail as a substitute for really communicating with his children?
@jirihuf "he was only responsive by photo" refers to the father being out of the "real "picture... the man going through therapy is recounting his youth and how after his father had abandoned them his mother took to drink while his only tangible connection to his father was a picture of him "he was only responsive by photo"...
I've always dug this song.... I always thought that Supposed Former nInfatuation Junkie was one of her more underappeciated discs. I love what she's getting at with the whole idea of therapy being this exercise where the floorboards of someones life get torn up and all of the hidden stuff, for better or for worse is on display and there's no running from it. Thanks for posting this song.
@WHALER66 i think its her her darkest album so to speak...its very intuitive...this album has a few masterpiece tracks that she wont ever top again, and in my opinion few of her best songs ever...
Most people do not understand this album nor this song!!! this song was soo brilliant.....she is talking about things her Dad went thru and taking on the role of her dad....again Brilliant!!
@johnnybigoode even though the album was misunderstood, at least it sold 7 million copies.....it did gain some attention and also Thank U did go to #1 and all the concerts for this album were sold out
Alanis, you are wise. You are warm. You are courageous. You are big. And I love you (and your music) more now than I ever have in my whole life.

'you reminded her so much of your father
so you were banished and you wonder why you're so hypersensitive
and why you can't trust anyone but us
but then how can I begin to forgive her so many years under bridges with dirty water
she was foolish and selfish and cowardly if you ask me.'

"He was only responsive by photo."
Can anyone, please, explain this sentence to me. I am not sure I understand this phrase quite right (English is not my first language). Thank you!

@jirihuf ...
"Only responsive by photo" <--- He needed pornography (photo) to become aroused (responsive)

I remember having a tape of this album.
I remember having a sony walkman.
And this song was so awesome.
Sadly the album was so different from the Jagged Little Pill, it was a really good album, but sadly it had no commercial appeal.
