The Valley of the Sun as is is often referred is home to the 6th largest city in the United States. Annual rainfall and the temperatures make it one of the hottest driest deserts on earth. Interesting thing happens when you start driving across the state of Texas which is almost entirely capable of being tillable land. After driving an entire day, still wouldn't have crossed Texas.

If a bottle of water was needed by someone afraid of heights and located on the top rung of a ladder, when thirsty enough height is reduced to a mere obstacle.

The nature of the questions and how the sampling is taken all have an affect on the outcome of the study. Originally the Native people to settle the area were the Hohokam Indians They were an agriculture based civilization dependent on using a Canal system that totals Thousands of miles. The problem is being considered by people who rarely if ever leave the City and they tend to have a distorted concept of how massive just the US is. Just look on a map and can see the density of the highways near the coasts and they change from miles to hundreds of miles apart throughout most of the country. Hard to appreciate the Grand Canyon only looking down, hike down it and look up.

Once air-conditioning became affordable a great many people moved into the desert and the demand for water was solved by building the Central Arizona Project and bringing it from the high country to the desert. I say again...
You keep making an erroneous analogy between North America and Australia.
North America has an abundance of fertile land mass and access to fresh water.
Australia's land mass is 90% sterile (hematite and/or silica sand) and is in a virtually permanent state of drought.
Even if the sterile soil was somehow miraculously transformed into fertile soil, there is still no water to collect or pipe.
Thus, Australia is 90% UNINHABITABLE and the US is 100% HABITABLE.

Melbourne is awesome... AND QLD IS WIERD!!!! yes the homes are cheaper... but everything else is more expensive and the pay is less just about anywhere you go! i was up there for 2 months and i was on $2 less an hour (im 17 so thats pretty epic!) even woolworths pay was less!

moved to geelong and the only time i go to melbourne i go too see family but i avoid the city .rents in the north of melbourne
were $200+ when i left for geelong and in geelong got a 4 bedroom house for $140.
times have changed i am now paying 200 a week. but it took 8 to9 years to creep up to that much.
