There is some basis for this "islam means peace" belief, in a couple of ways.
According to orthodox islam, once every person on earth is a muslim, the world will be in harmony. Doesnt quite work that way in reality, and its easy to see by the rampant violence between islamic sects.
Also, there is a distinct difference in the quran between the media and mecca verses.
When mohammad first started out, he really was preaching a peaceful religion. However, once he moved to a new city, he started resorting to robbing caravans for money, and the quranic verses started becoming more and more violent.
He used the principle of abrogation (sura 2.106) to justify allah "changing his mind" by preaching violence over peace.
So, there are many muslims who are decent people, because they dont really follow islam that closely - they just cherry pick the peaceful verses, in the same way many christians cherry pick what they want from the bible, and only go to church when they feel like it.
Doesnt change what the islamic texts mean, or what orthodox islam is all about. It just makes it harder to criticize the radical teachings in islam that lead to intolerance, hate, and violence.

Open any Quran and check 9:30 out. It's Qaatalahum, there is a dagger Alif after the Q which changes both the pronounciation and the meaning. The verb for this is QAATALA with a long vowel which means to fight ( or to curse). Now who is the one that needs first grade Arabic moron?

I did read the sura, and anyone who knows Arabic should know that the word is not " Qatalahum", since there is a Dagger Alef right after the Q. Dagger Alif means that there is a (long vowel) Alif and the word should read Qa'atalahum. I also listend to the recitation as it read Qa'atalahum. Google translator doesn't detect or desipher a dagger Alif let alone gives you the correct meaning.

Ilahu means God. qatala means to fight or kill. Since a fight requires and adversary and the allmighty god doesn't have an adversary, the only possible meaning is "KILL".
So it literally means: "Allah kill them!"

According to orthodox islam, once every person on earth is a muslim, the world will be in harmony. Doesnt quite work that way in reality, and its easy to see by the rampant violence between islamic sects.

From this root several other Arabic words are formed for example qatala 'kill, murder'; qatīl 'someone killed, a casualty'; qatl 'homicide'; maqtal 'vital spot on the body (injuring which brings death)'. Qātala is the normal word used in the Qur'an for doing battle, hence the translation 'fight'. In fact the more precise translation would be 'he engaged in intentional and sustained activity with the purpose of killing.'

No, this is not the word we're talking about, this word is qatalahum ( the verb is Qatala with short vowel) which means : killed them. that's not the word in dispute. Open any Quran and check 9:30 out. It's Qaatalahum, there is a dagger Alif after the Q which changes both the pronounciation and the meaning. The verb for this is QAATALA with a long vowel which means to fight ( or to curse). Now who is the one that needs first grade Arabic moron?

I did read the sura, and anyone who knows Arabic should know that the word is not " Qatalahum", since there is a Dagger Alef right after the Q. Dagger Alif means that there is a (long vowel) Alif and the word should read Qa'atalahum. I also listend to the recitation as it read Qa'atalahum. Google translator doesn't detect or desipher a dagger Alif let alone gives you the correct meaning.

I don't defend Christianity, or other religions. I don't care for their paganism, or your copied rituals as a muslim. But what I meant by living in the 7th century, I mean in mentality. @shomzabe Oh well, this is what Surah 9, Verse 30 says: qātalahumu (قَٰتَلَهُمُ) - verb (2)
3rd person masculine singular - l-lahu nominative proper noun
Ilahu means God. qatala means to fight or kill. Since a fight requires and adversary and the allmighty god doesn't have an adversary, the only possible meaning is "KILL".
So it literally means: "Allah kill them!"
TXHalabi is completely right about this verse. It is not translated correctly.

The word is "Qaatalahum" and the verb is "Qaatala" which means :to fight or curse. There are numerous sites on the web where you can listen to the audio. The word is written in old Quranic Arabic where in some words the long vowel "Alef" is invisible. Like the word "Laken", it's written LKN but pronounced LAKEN. This is not ad hominem, your Arabic sucks

So now you have the word as written which any 5th grader in Arabic would know as Qaatalahum, not Qatalahum, and the audio where the reciter clearly pronounce it " Qaatalahum".
