brill video! I have a question - i havent actually got a dog yet, but am just preparing for when i do (which will be soon). When clicker training and then rewarding, does the dog later on always expect a treat after every
command he does? and will he get confused later on if I don't click when he does something right, even if he's been taught it from the start? please do a video response or comment back, thank you :D
Okay, i just started training my dog. I have a question..
So, she only knows the tricks sit, lie down (takes a while though), over (on her side) and roll over. The problem is she only does it for treats and can only do it in that order..
How can i use no treats in any training session or out of training and get her to do the tricks in any order?
Also, ive been trying to teach her paw.
She isnt getting it. I think that she thinks she gets a treat for me picking up her hand.. Ive been through a
thanks for you videos. I got the same question how to replace a clicker. I see the advantages of it (consistance signal and easy to do it very exactly in time) but to be honest I think I am getting annoyed by the clicking all day long. Is a dog wristle good too? I could be used quite with the time precision like the clicker but I would not hear it? Or any other alternatives. Or I have to find a "special" word. do you click all the time all day long? does the dog lose the connection if you dont?
for any training, how long should you do it everyday ? how often ? or you don't stop until the dog gets it ?? btw i just got a 10month old rott .. i wonder if age will make the training harder .
Hi tab I love your videos. I have a 12 wk old puppy. She is very smart. I'm clicker training her. I was wondering how I can teach her to sit from a down position. She can sit and down well, but once she is already down, she doesn't know how to sit. I've been moving her with my hands from a down to a sit, but she doesn't understand bc she can't repeat it. Any ideas? Thx
Question: how can I stop puppy from laying on the ground when he knows its time to go home or when he see's a patch of tall grass. Basically he just lays on the floor like a little kid throwing a tantrum and its very hard to get him to move since he is a large breed. Plus I want to know how to make him know that this is a bad behavior and to not do it.

hey everyone who's looking for a clicker u can get a clicker app on the app store if u have an apple product ( itouch, iphone). im not sure if it's on android market but i hope this helps.
I know I'm not tab289, but I think in my opinion, GSD's are not very good beginner dogs, but maybe a second or third dog. Since they are large dogs and sometimes aggressive if trained by an inexperienced owner, they may be stubborn and do how they please, I think maybe starting with a slightly easier dog to handle will be better as a beginner dog. But this is just my opinion. If you want to get one as a beginner it's perfectly fine:) just go with what you think. Also, do some research.
@tab289 I was wondering if you could help me with something, I'm looking to get my first dog, always wanted one and from what i understand german shepherds are great dogs and easily trainable but still there are mixed responses as to weather or not a GSD is suitable for a first timer?
What would you say, and out of interest what was your first dog?
First I love your channel, and your approach to teaching. My question is, how would you use positive reinforcement to curb a negative behavior? Such as excessive barking? Further more I would love to see a video on how to teach a dog to roll over and also speak/bark. Thanks for what you do!!!!!! :)
I am just about to get a puppy and have been looking around for the best training videos, methods, collars to use etc. Your vids with positive clicker training are just awesome, the best on youtube and on the internet! i just wanted to say thanks as I cant wait to start training using your methods.
@tab289 Hi Tab: Do you have any advice about an old behavior issue: counter surfing. We have a one and a half year old Irish Setter who, in this regard, is incorrigible. While telling him "off" will always compel him to stop his counter surfing the moment we catch him in the act, it does nothing to discourage it from continuing.. A popular distraction involving soda cans tied together that fall to the floor strikes us as silly, ineffective, and possibly dangerous. What do you suggest?
Your training are ok. the best thing is you don't use force and I like it, may be in some way you are somekind of leader ship and you don't notice, hopefully she don't eat you thinking you are a filet milon or barbecue chiken, I hope you don't hate me
Do you have any advice for positive training on a dog who is fearful defensive/aggressive and barks/growls at guests? I feel like if I build up an assosiation that is posititive with treats, it will reward the behavior.
@Makoce When it comes to aggression, there are a LOT of variables to consider before devising a plan to help resolve the issue. If you feel like the dog is actually aggressive & posing a threat to anyone, I would strongly recommend seeking out a professional dog trainer that uses clicker training and positive reinforcement only to assess the situation further.
@tab289 At this stage in the 'aggression' is it strickly defensive. She will growl and bark, hide under desks or tables, but never goes for a bite. If I leave it as it is, she may feel more confident in her fear, and thats then it would turn to real aggression where she could possibly harm someone. So since it isnt yet at that point, what can do I do change the reaction to guests & strangers?
Hi, Tab289! I have a question reguarding your videos. When I reward my dog after he did an action Im trying to reenforce, or when teaching him anything , really ,do I give my dog the treat in my hand or do I just put the treat on the floor? Thanks!
Hey Tab awesome advice, i think these video's are just as good as your other training videos, i like the idea of using his dry-food as a low rank treat, currently trying to teach him how to ring a bell near the door, and once he knows how il'll try teach him that when he rings it i will open the door, for him to go outside (to pee etc), hope it works wish i could video it for ya
For example, you're walking with her, she see another animal (cat, rabbit, etc...) and runs after. Then you call her back but you don't have treat. How does she react ?
Is there a way to make a transition to reward with a "hug" or a kind word instead of food ?
@Conflup I too would like to know the answer to this! When is it time to wain off the treats, and still have her understand that the behavior is expected and appreciated?!
thanx for answering questions! i got one.....how do i stop my girl 7month old pup from piddling around the house?! she goes potty outside so shes knows but sometimes she gets too excited (like wen we invite her to be on the couch) and pees a little. how do i stop it!
It's great that you're tackling some of the FAQs... you should put something up about the importance of early socialization, especially since you have a german shepherd!
Zooey has to "work" for a good portion of her daily food, on an average day I'd say that 1/3 of her meal comes from training! I use meat for our 'stay' and 'leave it' with distractions but for everything else she's more than happy to preform for her kibble! I try to make sure to always have some kibble near me so I can reward for any good behavior, like staying out of the kitchen while I'm cooking, or not barking at a friend/stranger walking by the yard.
Hand feeding as training! YES! We do however use higher value rewards when teaching some complicated behaviors OR those that might stand in conflict with other interests. Convincing a retriever to give up a toy can be done more enthusiastically using a higher value treat than just kibble. Vela's gold standard is croissant. So doing anything that requires her to release something from her mouth gets her a piece of croissant while TEACHING, but while training, we lower the value to kibble. ;-)
OK! How would you use positive training to keep a dog within the perimeter of it's yard? We have a fenced in area for my 2 shepherd girls (about 20' by 60') but when I'm out with them in our backyard (they're never left there unsupervised) I want them to know they can't leave, even if there's a distraction beyond the yard. We live at the end of a dead end street in a small rural village, but still get the occasional car, dog, or walker going by. Any ideas?
@AppleCore360 I was taught by a police dog trainer from a nearby town to just walk the dog around the property and say NO! firmly every time we hit the perimeter. It seemed to work for my first shepherd who was also obedience trained by him. (He also told me that "the most important word she knew was NO!" ) But now that I'm in the positive training mode, I'm wondering how else to handle it!
@fuddyduds thank you for sharing! :D It seems like an effective method. But to have your dogs best known word be "NO" seems so negative... I hope that there are more positive way's for a dog to learn this...
