did anyone else had find the way to load casete games with almost x2 speed ? , well in xe models and in simple games ( like golf / swat etc) i u were pressing the ff button on the casste player genlty it spined the rotor faster , the xe was capable to read the program that way ( if u had a way to keep the button pressed with the same force all time )
This was quite an addictive game, trying to acquire the necessary amount of diamonds while trying to beat the timer and not getting done in at the same time. It's a good example of taking a concept from another game (e.g., Dig Dug), but making something quite original out of it.
It had a cool title screen, and its kinetic musical theme is one of my all-time favorites. Back then, I'd usually let it play in the background incessantly. It sounded especially grand connected to a stereo system.
Really great game. I played Boulder Dash in my childhood for hours and hours. Emerald Mine was a nice clone, too. If you like this type of games, you might want to check out GET THE GEMS, my homage to Boulder Dash. Just search youtube for "get the gems walkthrough" !
Back in 1993/1995 I made a Boulder Dash clone twice, one for the Atari ST and one for the Atari Falcon, called "Boulder Smash". The latest one is my clone for the Apple Macintosh called "Crystal Gems 3.0". :-)
I remember spending hours and hours and hours plus many more playing this awesome game. I definitely feel it should be ported to the PC, and all consoles. Hell, this would make an awesome game for the Nintendo DS line, too. They don't make em' this way anymore.
Wow! Thanks for sharing this...like many others here, I played this awesome game for hours at a time back in high school. Still have a working 800XL and am tempted to see if I can play this for real...
OMG, I remember coming home from school, getting off the bus and just playing this game until dinner time. WOW, so many hours of my life devoted to this. HAHA, seems pathetic now, but that was FUN back then.
I played this so long ago, back on an Atari, along with the tape cassette in the tapedeck, that had to be played from start to finish before the game was loaded...and that 'new level' tingle thingy! That is so memorable! Makes me feel old thinking back to then...tho' it was all my dad's, not actually miiine...
ive still got my atari 800xl and was just thinking about trying to make some videos with it but im sure my tape deck is knackerd :( might just use an emulator.
Boulder Dash was released by First Star for both the CBM and Atari machines. Electronic Arts got involved for Boulder Dash 2, distributing it for First Star. Electronic Arts only had the moniker EOA in Great Britain as a company in Wales had the same name, and it wasn't until the late 80's, (when it ceased trading) that EA were able to buy the rights to use that name in the UK. Interestingly, BD 3 only came out on the C64 in Europe. But then it was horrible, and bug ridden lol
I didn't watch the whole clip yesterday because of slow access, but I did just now and the extra sounds only happen on the first cave, then they disappear for the rest of the clip. There's a hiss sound about the same time Rockford appears, a second "ding" sound around the time he collects a diamond, and a "metallic" distortion sound just before he exits, but nothing else, and nothing in the following caves either.
I don't have nothing against emulation but I think that playing the game with the original home computer with original tape or disk is a lot better ;) Here in YouTube a lot of games videos are recorded using an emulator, not me ;) I don't know about the sound, maybe is my tv! Anyway thanks for your comment!
i hated waiting for the game to load from casette ;> now i would love to go back and wait again ;)

The slow PAL version of BD's title music always sounds so sad.

You guys ever play Miner Dig Deep on Xbox Live Marketplace indie channel? It's an amazing game and only $1, a total homage to Boulder Dash.

Loved this different colours on each level. The Atari had more colours than most of its rivals, especially the ZX Spectrum!

well EA also got the copyright from firststar to use the game for the Commadore 64 and 128 systems. BTW EA used to be called back then EOA.
