    This is real music!

  • JOHN MOTHERFUCKING HENRY

  • too much music muddles the lyrics. C+

  • @909830 It sounds much better on the original CD, this is not the best as far as balance.

  • amazing !!

  • @Koureas... shame your Dad wasn't one!

  • The guy is a wanker. God and all the blues men in this world and the next, they all know, this guy is a wanker.

  • awesome!!! Does anyone know who the red haired gal is playing and singing next to him?

  • @oaklandfla2

Thart's Patti Scialfa. She's now the ex Mrs. Bruce Springsteen

  • now thats music

  • isnt this just fantastic????

  • Mighty stuff!

  • holy cow. that was amazing.

  • A wonderful and powerful presentation of a song that, in my opinion, is one of the most important in our American cultural heritage. Bruce Springsteen is more than a great musician. He is great in an area that I believe is lacking in America today... the art of storytelling. Warmest regards to all...Joseph

  • @SabrinasUSAfan I totally agree, I'm from England and this has been my favourite folk song since I first heard it from the playing of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee.

    Long live John Henry!

  • W O N D E R F U L. I love it.

  • Great version about a great american by a great group of americans

  • Bruce come to Gloucester UK like this please.

  • the man is a pure genius wow

  • bring him on back to his roots..... yyeeee haaaaa! excellent stuff!

  • Good stuff.

  • Center

  • Wonderful..........

  • Saw the Seeger Sessions set at Wolftrap in VA, good times. At 23 I'm not a typical fan of this music, but it's really good.

  • its from the seger sessioans

  • This song, is my favorite song. With Jacob McKnight on the banjo and Serena Williams hitting the background vocals.

  • 28 people who don't like this?!

How can you not like this?

    Bruce is the best!

  • check Big Bill Broonzy's version out, it rocks

  • @drfunkenstein251 good call. way less corny than this!

  • check out Big Bill Broonzy's version, that really rocks.

  • check out Big Bill Broonzys version that really rocks.

  • fantastic. my mothers older sister came to visit and somehow we got in to music and she told about a fantastic consert on tv. Ive just got my hands of this cd and played it for her. it often takes 3-4 years between visits so it was really fun that she liked the same music as i. she is nearlly 80. sorry for my spelling

  • Not that great, sorry.

  • this recording on the seeger sessions cd,a dvd came with this.gotta be the best work from this dude. You could never describe pete seeger as a redneck he's one of the good americans, live on pete:?

  • Saw him twice on this tour in Ohio, and while this recording/crowd is good, it doesn't come close to touching the energy at those shows. Everyone there grew up singing/hearing John Henry, Old Dan Tucker, Erie Canal, etc. in school and at fairs and knew the songs by heart.

  • love this song

  • This reminds me of Tom T. Hall's "More About John Henry" Bruce.

  • I'm probably wrong, but when that first fiddle solo is took, the lovely lady's fingers don't seem to be doing what I'm hearing. Did the cameraperson focus on the wrong fiddler? Was it the guy playing that in fact? You can see after "Come on!" that the guy begins a solo...

  • looks like he's having a whole lot of fun here

  • @glenneveaux FINALLY! Someone who has written more songs in more diverse styles and has been held in a higher regard by peers and critics alike is telling it how it is! I am hoping you will repeat this for your grammy award speech, pure poetry!

  • @glenneveaux You've got to be kidding....because if you're serious then you are a serious clown.

  • rednecks

  • He is incredible, can't wait to see him in concert again. He has been my favorite for over 30 years.

  • @htmiser5 how can you worship that red neck for such a long time??

  • WILD SOUND~

  • Bruce,Bruce,Bruce,Bruce, Bruce, gotta love him.

  • the boss rules!

  • Lmao these sessions are incredible. Check out my page if you dig stuff like this - lots o bootlegs.

  • @MegaPianoplayer1 You can go to hell, I mean how many times can you get Happy about causing people to get pissed off?, I hope one day you realize that, but your soul is too empty to care.

  • they screened this show on bbc3 recently, the whole concert is wonderful :)

  • just when u think BRUUUCCEE has done it all !!!..YEEEHHAAWW!!!!!!!!!!!

  • just when u think BRUUUCCEE has done it all !!!..YEEEHHAAWW!!!!!!!!!!!

  • To GOFI,

That's not booing you're hearing. It's been a long time tradition at any of Bruce's performances to chant "Bruce" whenever you can.

  • How can we not love this guy? Bruce forever in our hearts :)

  • simplemente buenasso

  • awesome!

  • its great to see the boss go bluegrass

  • What was with the booing and catcalls from waaay at the back of the audience at the end?

  • yeah i heard the same from his Old Dan Tucker in italy

  • nothing comparable to woody´s version

  • agreed

Bruce does a good job in whipping up a pommie crowd into a frenzy but listenenig to Woody sing this accompanied by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee is incomparable.

  • @cop out 7,

pommy`s appreciate good music! not any kylie / jason "piss soaked tunes"

  • You can see how impassioned the Boss and the whole band is and how the audience is going crazy! When music can move you out of your seat and make you clap like you were in a tent revival....now, that's music!!

  • was at that show in dublin, easily one of the best experiences of my life, what a man, pure genius...........

  • i was baptised in this Church

St Lukes in the City of London

    May 1950..

  • i think this is bruces best work to date...

  • Kings and queens princes and princesses will come and go.

Bruce will always be the boss.

  • Its from the Cd called Bruce Springsteen the seeger sessions . We Shall Overcome the title.

  • truly fine work it is

  • the boss!...still the king of 'em all, y'all.

  • Amen! and to the african american community for bringing us such men as John Henry!!!

  • Incredible!

    What DVD is this from?

  • I don't think it's ever gone out on disc - this was a TV special in the UK.

  • @philcrawley

No it was only on TV but if you look very closely Mr. Azureus will help you out ;)

  • @philcrawley You may know by now that this is indeed on disc, "the Seeger Sessions", all songs originally performed by Pete Seeger. (Not this performance, but all his Seeger songs.)

  • @philcrawley You got the Dvd when you bought the cd. Don't know whether it's this full film though

  • It might not be that particular performance of the song but he has release a CD and DVD from that tour. It's called "Live in Dublin. Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions Band".

  • @usaalways

It's on the american version of the cd Bruce Springsteen and the Seeger Sessions!

  • @usaalways It also was a tv special here some years ago. There IS a CD+DVD edition of the Seeger Sessions, but you only see them recording 6 songs in the studio: John Henry, Pay me my money down, Buffalo Gals, Erie Canal, Oh Mary don't you weep, Shenandoah, and on the cd are 13 audio tracks... Of course, it's great also.

  • @usaalways A very nice DVD accompanied the Seeger Sessions album

  • I have the dvd. It is double sided. one of it is the cd, and the other is the dvd.

    It's worth to buy!!

    JJ from Hungary

  • @usaalways we shall overcome bob seeger sesion

  • I don't think this song can be assigned to any particular person. It is an old, old song.

  • johnny cash did a cover...this song was written and performed by woody guthrie

  • Written by woody guthrie?

No, this is an anonymous old african american tune.

  • Have you ever seen anyone who looks so natural on stage and looks like he is really enjoying himself. Absolutely fantastic!!!!

  • This man just gets better with age. He's amazing.

  • This is originally a Johnny cash song. Off of the folsom prison blues album.

  • Great!!

  • I'm the dude playing the toilet plunger.......lol

  • I like the more raw older versions of this song.

  • I am john henry

  • ...frisch ,begeisternd...md

  • No booing involved here ... just the old schoolers yelling " BROOOOOOCE " ... The MAN just loves to make music. I'm amazed how he evolves from one musical genre to the next. Rod Stewart take notes.

  • is it just me or does bruce look like an older cris cornell? (just a thought)

  • Awesome!!!

    Grandma Mary

  • I want this band to tour again I want..PAY ME MONEY DOWN !!!! LOVE IT BABY

  • America needs John Henry now.

  • It's a joy to see that so many of us still appreciate music like this... especially these days.

  • IT'S LA BAMBA

  • (8) John henry was a litlle baby...(8)

  • Love it!

  • Cool as fuck

  • You can hear the fun they have together when they playing.

Micheal is maybe the King of pop, Bruce is the King of music and the Boss......

  • Yah like he has time in his boring little schedule!!!!!Get real

  • geil geil geil!!

  • Bruce ist ein toller Musiker!!

  • This is just pure Springsteenmagic! Pure rock! Keep on rockin' man! :P

  • I like this version a lot, but the late Johnny Cash did "John Henry" a little better. His version can be heard on: Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison

  • While they are singing about the same legend, the two songs are not the same. The Boss is singing a different song: "John Henry" JC's is "Legend of John Henry's Hammer"

  • it IS the same song ;) with different titles maybe, like happens for so many folk songs.

  • Phenomenal

  • Curious comment peehole. Is that your real name?

  • Think about a jam session with goran bregovic....!...

  • Was listening to the record the other day, when something odd stroke me, why is it called the Seeger sessions, when no of the songs were written by Pete Seeger???

  • Comment removed

  • Just heard a rumour that Bruce Springsteen is about to realease an album called THE BEATLES SESSIONS, it will include song as: Please Mr Postman, Twist & Shout, Rock & Roll Music, Honey Dont, A Taste of Honey...

  • Do not get me wrong, I am a big Springsteen fan, but I think he should stick to play rock music!!!

  • totaly agree!!

    but........this good too :O

  • I am not saying it is not good, but the political side of Seeger is totally missing. Remember Pete Seeger was called for the McCarthy commitee in the 50s, he was one of the few that took the first ammendment, most other people that came for the commitee took the fifth ammendment. And if you shoul make a tribute to american folkmusic it should be called the Lomax collection, he was the guy who collected all the songs...

  • Johnny did it better.

  • John Henry was a steel driving man!!!!!

  • first time i hear this song.

    My feet is still rocking

  • Seems like they had great fun :-) This song makes me wanna dance!

  • i can see your point smallshot597, but I sure love that raspy or crispy voice. And you can't deny that he has a great music ear, and plays a lot of different melodies, from "Born In he U.S.A." to "John Henry" Rock to folk music. and I certainly don't think this is depressing music, but great Jazz/folk.

  • shut up u stupid hater

  • hes one of my favorite artists

  • daamn this is rock at it's very best! :P

  • arkred & rockyracune why are u on this site and listenig to this song if u don't like bruce or the song! sounds like u both have nouthing else to do but go on sites and criticize talented singers like bruce! fans don't give a f--k what u think! so go to the boy bands sites and post your stupid comments there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • grande grande grande da decenni

  • I miss the Seeger session tour, it was fun!

  • he just tells it how it is

  • My my my :)... There noone like Bruce The Boss Springsteen :) He's the best!

  • very cool! thanks for posting it!

  • WOW! All in the audience seems to have such a nice time! This rocks - it makes me wanna dance around! Thanks for posting! Bruce is great!

  • Haha, I'm a big boss fan, don't get me wrong, but EzrinJem2 kinda has a point. I've heard that Clarence called her Yoko around the time Springsteen broke up the band in the 80's. My ears also hurt when I heard her sing vocals in 10th avenue freeze out on his live in new york album.

That being said, I've come to respect the whole band, and I think each member of the band has a unique and well balanced relationship in the band, which makes seeing them live all the better.

  • His "guitar action" reminds me of Johnny Cash. Nice to see... Great songs. Bruce is the Boss! 5 stars for this.

  • seems you know what that is like????

  • He's the goddamn boss. You got a problem with his choice of companionship, why not say so to his face?

  • S.T.F.U., you big baby!

  • what a guy i wish hed come to llandudno like nils did that was the best gig iv ever been to, unfortunatley i dont think hed make money here.

  • Bruce is the best ever. He truly is THE BOSS.

  • TG there are still Americans like Pete and Bruce!! Never beat us down!!

  • This is PURE BRUCE if you ask me. This is his calling. He clearly loves this. I love the BOSS singing this music!!

  • GREAT BRUCE VIDEO!! I have a teen-oriented, hockey themed book coming out in October which has over 25 Bruce song and characters from Bruce songs, references (the hockey team is named the Magic Rats, the lead character plays hockey "undeneath Abrams Bridge" etc)!!

I did a promo video for the book and you can see the video by just clicking on my name.

  • i'll drink to bruce! he's always makin me dance :)

  • When you think about it, this is really just classic Bruce singing in a small venue. Sure the band is bigger, but this is a style that would have fit just perfectly into a venue like the Stone Pony!

  • Insane stuff

  • I think Bruce has gotten waaaay too much crap for this record and the tour that followed it. Sure, it's not with the ESB, but that doesn't mean it isn't good. I mean, c'mon, people. When's the last time Mick Jagger had the guts to do something that was "outisde the box"?

There are many reasons they call Bruce "The Boss". One of them is that he does what he wants with his music... Screw the Billboard Chsrts and screw the radio-stations. The Boss is gonna he what he wants to do!

  • Excuse me... I meant "Billboard Charts". Sorry for the typo.

  • Any Civilization IV fans will recognize the line he says at 2:20, quoted by Leonard Nimoy when you discover Steel.
