If anyone knows what artist was playing the music in the scene when she walks into the room with him, to put him in the coffin. Could you let me know? Thank you in advance : )
To all the people that aren't sure about what happened to Mr. Bowie, here's the explanation. Miriam was a "pure vampire," so to speak, and the last of her kind. All her other companions were once humans that were later converted to vampire, thus making them hybrids. Since they weren't true vampires, they would live for about 200 - 300 years, then rapidly age.
After the vampire hybrids' bodies were too old to function, they would fall into a permanent vegetive state. Their bodies would continue to wither and decompose, but they would still be aware of what was going on around them. This is how Miriam's existence is described in the book, and the movie followed suit, but they didn't really take the time to explain it. That's basically what happened to poor Mr. Bowie. I hope I could help!
@Notzi1981 I adore this film, I've seen it so many times and never tire of it..is the book it's based on called 'The Hunger'? I've only just learned from your post that there is a book,I want to read it now! I always felt for the past lovers of Miriam..not being able to die, stuck in a coffin but still having the hunger for blood..like being perpetually strung out for eternity. Catherine Denueve is so beautiful, and Bowie is underrated I think. Great post you wrote.
WHAT?!?!? He's not dead and she's putting him in a coffin! Can they die? Or will they remain aged like John and just lay there in coffins? I don't understand this and I don't like it. Bowie- aged and in a coffin... *weeps*
The only thing I didn't like about this film overall was the fact that David Bowie wasn't in it the entire time! Understandable, but yeah..other than that, I love it!
@Sergiooutside. In fact she once described herself as one chienne. Along with 300 other French women who committed abortion. Perhaps this movie is to remind that even the consummate star Bowie at the height of the serious moonlight, still wasn't quite in Marianne's league.
@PepsiGurl93 I don't think that's ever explained in the film, but it goes into detail in the novel...if I remember correctly, she's the last of her kind as a 'true vampire' and anyone she turns, while they'll have the chracteristics, are not actual vampires, and that's why they start to age rapidly afer a couple of centuries...sorry if that doesn't answer everything, but if you're really interested, you should read the novel, it might answer some things! :)
@sergioutside Actually, she didnt know why this was happening, nor does she expect it to happen to everyone of her lovers. So......there is no need to call Catherine Deneuve a bitch >.>
@IceAngel262: This film *is* sad... it plays on all of life's cruelties: Aging, loss of love, narcissism (i.e. feeding from others) and adds the twist of the damnation of being immortal. Immortality is great, as long as you're healthy! ; )
The criticism of this film, when it came out in the 80s, said it was just an empty collection of images, kind of like a music video. But it really is much better.
Unlike so many of the films of the 80s, the Flashdance and the Footloose, this one appeals to more than teenagers.
I was shocked of his getting old... super fast!

without a doubt this is one of the best flicks I've seen. Made in the 80's but its a timeless movie. Brilliant acting.
