@profkinyon Nope he reads there vocal and temple movements, if you ask someone to think of a word or keep saying it in there head eventually you will be able to see what there thinking. This is how he can guess a mass of information asking them to think of there pets name or whatever and when he has got it he goes further explaining what kind of breed it is. He is magnificent if you ask me

The obvious explanation is that Derren's explanation is an illusion. The Daily Mail was the most centrally located person and so a natural choice. The page number '14' may have been on every page of the paper that he read from, and he cued her by making it the 3rd advert he read. He seems to have time to add some of his own news scraps to the pile before she chooses. How he gets her to choose influential off that scrap, I don't know.
@jplmedley Several times already in the show he emphasized the number 14 and Mail/Male. So how he got her to stop on the page and the other lady with the Daily Mail, I don't know, but he seems to have been setting up that situation well in advance.
