My ultimate question to this.... why the HELL would the Fubuki class DD charge an Iowa class BB and use it's guns? Torpedoes would have been launched well before the guns would have been used. With 20 of them idc how strong your bulge is the IJN torpedoes were superior in damage output and range. With that many coming at you the Iowa would have sank due to it's size - it can't avoid them all.
@AnimeFreakCal In real life the Iowa would have detected the destroyers long before they spotted her. The Iowa would have then proceeded to hammer the hell out of the Fubukis with long range gunfire. Alas, games have only progressed so far.
@MadMilitiaMen I never said anything about that aspect. While true the Iowa would have detected them LONG before they could fire anything. Japanese would have attacked at night where they had spotters that could match(or seem to) American radar With 20 of them charging the Iowa probably STILL would have sank because they are fast ships and the Iowa can only fire so fast/accurately. There is a whole LOAD of tactics that will be put out in a good convo.. but this is Youtube so its not gonna happen
@AnimeFreakCal Spotters cannot spot a Battleship sized target at 40,000 yards at night. Radar can however. At nighttime, the Iowa's radar could easily achieve a firing solution and accurately hit Destroyers at 35,000 yards. Its FC could even allow the ship to blindfire while performing highspeed manuevers. The Destroyers would be sunk by a completely unseen enemy. Some might eventually catch on, but by that time, they would likely retreat.
Nice of the Japanese ships to stay out of torpedo range and let the American shoot them all. Whoever designed this game knows very little about naval warfare. The only time an American battleship (USS Washington) faced Japanese destroyers during the war (November 15, 1942) her captain wisely fought a running retreat to avoid torpedo attack and draw the Japanese away from the American battleship (USS South Dakota) they'd already crippled.
And the Japanese got to running away fleeing for their lives in the pacific cause they pissed off a big ass American Ship that was having a bad day hmm i wonder which would have won a kamikaze destroyer or pissed off battleship thumbs up if you think Iowa class Battleship if you don't then your a Jap that didn't like losing. Not really lol!! =)
@Olddog231 Quite ironic you should say "what a dumbass remark", to then follow that up with the incorrect spelling of "countries". I think you will actually find it's the United States who's been the one asking for help recently; Afghanistan and Iraq just to jog your memory.
The destroyers would have closed to launch their torpedoes. As they were traveling in two groups it wouldn't have been that big of a problem to set up the attacks. Remember what happened at Leyte Gulf when the Japanese tried to use their battleships against the US invasion fleet.
This is a game to escape reality just like most games do. I would have designed Iowa to be able to successfully attack and sink 100 Japanese combat ships and show the President taking a bath while it went on.
at that range, the Japanese Long Lance torpedo would destroy the Iowa.. end of game.. (the range of a type 93, Long Lance torpedo is 25 miles at 44 mph, longer than the range of the Iowa's main guns which is 23.6 miles)
Those destroyers should have try to sneak in the torpedo range rather than keep firing small caliber gun. Japanese navy at the time had the best torpedoes (type-93) in the world and they knew this fact very well. Torpedo assault is the only chance a Japanese destroyer can sink an Iowa-class battleship. In fact, type-93 was designed to let IJN destroyers and cruisers disable some US battleships before decisive sea battle. 5-inch gun? You may need 200 destroyers instead of 20.
Fun video, not very realistic but fun all the same. In such a battle the odds are the Iowa would be lost, she would count for a few of the Japanese destroyers but odds are with all things considered that without an escort the Iowa would be lost. Battlefleets included destroyers for a reason, namely for defence against other smaller ships, 1stly torpedo boats, then destroyers then submarines. Fun video all the same though
As stated, this simulation was for fun, but in reality, & especially in broad daylight (like the simulation), 20 IJN destroyers would not stand a chance against the USS Iowa. The crushing blow of a single 16 shell would be enough to sink a DD, not to mention the rapid firing 5 inch secondary armament that could rain in shells. Long Lances were awesome at night when the target steamed nice & straight ahead & torpedo wakes could not be seen, especially in close and set them at the higher speed.
So Admiral Lee completed his mission, turn back the IJN bombard force & resupply convoy. He did not need to risk his BB's to sink every IJN ship. Could he have sunk more? Yes, but IJN ended pursuit & turned back due to the theat of the Cactus AF as daylight approached, Chasing a USS BB with operable rear 16 inch battery was not smart anyway. USS South Dakota took a lot of damage but nothing that threatened her survival. Thankfully for the IJN, she was poorly handled that night.
2nd Naval Battle of Guadalcanal? USS Washingtom sank the IJN Kirishima (BB) & IJN Ayanami (DD) with gunfire that night & damaged several other IJN ships. USS South Dakota had 2 major electrical malfunctions that crippled her radar & fire control systems & she got off only 5 main battery salvos during the whole engagement. The IJN Long Lances only scored a few hits on the screening USS DD's, sinking 2. Several malfunctioned & a whole lot more missed, & they fired the bulk of them at the USS BB's.
just for fun vid, nothing to get riled up about. Though I do believe a destroyer (aside from aircraft carriers) is a battleship's worst enemy, they may be small but they have the firepower to damage or cripple ANY ship in a fleet. That is why they were called the workhorse on any naval fleet.
what people dont understand is that even though the torpedo offers high stoping power against large ships and even battleships. the destroyers couldint GET that close easly due to several factors im not qualifyed to talk about lol! but basicaly it would half to be a ballsy destroyer to want to get in range of a battleships main guns. thats a oneshot kill nomater where it strikes. that ship is going down.
I think the Japanese Destroyers orders were " Sail in a nice tight circle, keep speed down, do not engage enemy ship with your torpedoes, and make it easy for the enemy to hit you"!!
20 Japanese destroyers each firing 6 or so torpedoes in a properly coordinated attack probably could have scored some dozens of torpedo hits( especially at night) on the Iowa, its difficult to see how she could have stayed afloat after that many hits..thats why battleships are escorted by destroyers and cruisers to prevent a massed attack by that many torpedo carrying enemy ships
@wildwindsca "long lance???" the excellent IJN (Imperial Japanese Navy) torpedo that while had its flaws, was powerful, fast and exploded when it hit
USN Torps sucked, especially in the beginning of the war
Nice of the Japanese ships to stay out of torpedo range and let the American shoot them all. Whoever designed this game knows very little about naval warfare. @QuietThought "her captain wisely fought a running retreat to avoid torpedo attack and draw the Japanese away from the American battleship (USS South Dakota) they'd already crippled" SoDak was not crippled by IJN DD or torps. She was "criplled" by electrical issues
She was hit over 26 times (backlit by a burning destroyer at night is not good) but was not seriously damaged and sailed on her own power
Check battle off Samar when Yamato and the other IJN BBs ran from USN DD torps
@paintballKid545 dont have no idea what your talking about but if you pulled your head out of your ass hole you coud actually talk above a smart ass and dumb ass
@paintballKid545 really ass thats all you got to say wow my ten year old nephew says the same hes probably as dumb as you are, you have opportunity to talk to some one twice your iq and three time wiser than you . and you usa to talk like a ten year . dont have time to make you wiser idiot . must be a trolling ass hole
@onlythewise1 If even your 10 year old nephew can notice your shit grammar then you must be even more retarded then i thought. "and usa to talk like a ten year old" What the fuck!
@paintballKid545 cant you pull your head out of your ass hole and at least talk above a ten year old try to reach a 16 year old . other wise dont talk to me until you pull your hed out of your ass hole
@paintballKid545 look in the mirror there is somehting so ingonrant and dumb about you it must be your head is stuck up your ass hole i bet it been in there so long it feels normal now pull it out and then you can talk above a shit head.
@QuietThought well when the iowas came out the japan did not win much, at the begining japan had better fleet but not after the three iowas came out . my dad was there and they didnt run .. even our planes soon became the best wiping out japan .
@onlythewise1 -- The Iowas were fine ships, the best of the dreadnoughts, but they were an obsolete concept. The only reason we needed them was because the Japanese had dreadnoughts of their own and there was the odd chance they might get close enough to our ships to use their guns. Beyond that, no one's dreadnoughts were cost effective, as you build a few hundred bombers and train pilots and crew for a lot less money and in a lot less time.
@QuietThought in fact this game is actually a submarine game which to me is pretty accurate. but this is actually a mod for this game which is made by a modder. As in sense modder made mod because for fun not accuracies.
@dafrandle . . . Apparently not in this game. The Japanese gutted whole squadrons of Allied cruisers with destroyers in several battles. The Americans and Australians never quite caught on that the Japanese Long Lances had twice the range of their torpedoes.
@dafrandle . . . Scholar Richard Frank, trying to figure out how an American ship was sunk during a confused engagement off Guadalcanal, concluded that the ship could not have been struck by a Long Lance. This was because, in all his research, no one who had ever been on a ship struck by one ever had the least doubt about what had hit them. There was nothing else that hit remotely as hard.
@QuietThought Yeah, my grandfather served on the USS South Dakota, his job was to help load and clean the guns, and he was in a place in the ship where you wouldn't want to be hit by a torpedo at.
@QuietThought In that engagement USS Washington not just drew Japanese away from the American battleship (USS South Dakota) they'd already crippled, but also sunk IJN Battleship Kirishima.
@QuietThought If he wanted a good example of a real Battleship vs. destroyers he should look at the desperate tactics of the battle of Leyte Gulf. When about 8 destroyers, 10 Destroyer escorts and 4 small escort Carriers fought to protect landing beaches against a desperate Japanese attack. If not he can look at the battle of the Jutland for even more organized destroyer torpedo attacks.
@QuietThought Are you you sure you've got the right battle? The Sodak was crippled after it fought the Japanese battleship Kirishima. The Washington came and sank the Kirishima. My grandfather was a gunnery officer on board the Washington and he told me all about it. I think you may be getting your battles mixed up. The one with the destroyers took place later.
@QuietThought the Iowa class battleships can accurately engage 9 targets at ranges of over 20 miles, even the longest ranging japanese torpedo doesnt even have 1/10 that range, so there would be no way for the Fubuki to even get in torpedo range before being utterly decimated.
lol that shows the power of the Iowas and just amagin if we had finished the Montanas when we were fighting the japanes they would be insta owned by one of thoughs
a japanese marine is equal to an sas commando so a japanese commando would shit on the sas without breaking a sweat, same with the navy america has no skill they only have strenghth in numbers and cause they have huge weapons, if it comes down to a fight one on one the japanese would win every time
In no way are Japanese marines better than the SAS and the SAS's record speaks for itself.
Japanese marines performed well against prisoners with their hands tied behind their backs and that is all, they got beaten every time they came up against even odds.
They behaved with no honour, they tortured and murdered their way across the pacific untill they ran into real sodiers.
@thebeeteam1gamercast Wrong mate, during the battle of Leyte Gulf, a few destroyers and destroyer escorts fought off the main Japanese fleet which included Yamato and three other Battleships. The Japs were completely outclassed by a much inferior enemy. Your insulting comments just show a total lack of knowledge about naval history.
@TheBByamashiro Why were they, they both had the same gun armament, (6 x 5" guns) and Fubuki had an extra Torpedo tube (3 x Triple mount versus 2 x Quadruple mount for Asashio). All of the IJN destroyers after Fubuki were just slight refinements on her and had identical fighting qualities, except for the Akizuki class which were AA Destroyers.
Iowa had a radar fire control system when it went into action in 43'.With those 16 guns they could have easily stood off beyond the 5 inch gun rang of the destroyers and laid waste. If any had made it close enough to engage line of sight,Iowa had enough gunnery capabilities to handle it.
20 destroyers vs a single battleship, the destroyers would likely win in the end. They'd take some heavy losses, but its not their guns that are the issue, its their torpedoes.
Once they got close they could bracket the BB with enough torps to put it out of action if not sink it outright. Thats assuming 50% losses just getting in close.
As depicted in this video, the iowa could deploy the 40 mm anti-aircraft batteries. Imagine being on the receiving end of each four gun AA firing 110 rounds per minute per gun. These weapons would sweep the decks clean of any IJN personnel.
For anyone who thinks Iowa could survive this. Google "Taffy 3" and realize how much threat a small group of destroyers can have on many big gun ships.
Taffy 3 at the Battle of Samar had plenty of air support. And that's what fooled Admiral Kurita and made him turn around and run. He thought those destroyers are trying to lure him into a trap in Layte Gulf and main force attack about to come.
@ssmusic214 He ran because in the confusion of battle he thought he was fighting cruisers, and his guns couldn't hit those destroyers at close range. Superior torpdeo tactics and smokescreening forced his ships to turn away from battle to avoid being hit.
@CommandoDude Japs couldn't tell Cruiser from Destroyer at lose range? Lol...
Kurita suffered big losses 2 days before at the Battle of Sibuyan Sea, and Hours before entire Jap S Force walked into US trap in Surigao Strait and was completely wiped out. When he saw suicidal attack of US destroyers and ferocious air attacks, he thought that entire US Carrier fleet was nearby and he was about to walk into another US trap.
@ssmusic214 He didn't THINK the US Carrier fleet was nearby, he thought the US carrier fleet was right there and UNDER his guns. He mistook several escort carriers for fleet carriers and pursued. The aggressive attacks of the destroyers broke up his formation and seriously damaged his cruisers, in conjunction with air attacks, making him think the enemy was stronger than it was. It had nothing to do with running from a trap, he did damage, he got a lot of damage, he withdrew.
Kurita himself reported SINKING of at least 2 carriers. If he thought those were fleet carriers, did he ran away from the carriers HE ALREADY SUNK? (while he still had 4 battleships including Yamato)?
@ssmusic214 He wasn't running away from the carriers. He thought he was fighting a much bigger force. The torp attacks split up his formation and damaged his cruisers so he withdrew before he though he'd get destroyed.
@CommandoDude Hallooo... Kurita still had 4 Battleships (including Yamato), 5 cruisers, 10 destroyers. More than enough to decimate transport, supply and landing ships sitting in Leyte Gulf (which was his mission in the first place). It was Fleet Carriers he had to worry about (after what they did to him at Sibuyan Sea). He new the 2 Carriers he sunk were NOT FLEET CARRIERS.
Escort Carrier - 7800 tonns Fleet Carrier - 35 000 tonns. Not too hard to tell the difference for Admiral.
@ssmusic214 Yes, it is hard to tell the difference, in the confusion of battle and with enemy destroyers laying down smokescreens. That's what he reported, two carriers sunk, not two escort carriers. And he couldn't risk approaching Leyte Gulf because he thought it was being guarded by Task Force 34, comprised of more battleships than he had. He didn't know that TF34 left.
His MISSION was to destroy supply and support ships IN LEYTE GULF and stop stop land invasion of Philippines. Task Force 34 was to be lured away North by Ozawa's Northern (decoy) force. It was the Japanese plan from VERY BEGINNING.
If he believed that Leyte Gulf was being guarded by Task Force 34, which he can not face, why would continue with the mission? To risk loss of entire fleet just to destroy Taffy 3 (of very little significance).
@ssmusic214 Kurita was not aware however, that the 3rd fleet BS and CVs were out of range, and Ozawa signaled Kurita that he did not believe he was engaging the whole 3rd fleet. The severe damage to his cruisers made him believe the ships he was engaging were bigger than they were. Rather than risky taking even further loses he scrubbed the mission after he learned the units he was to link up with were sunk. So my point stands, a few destroyers rebuffed battleships and cruisers.
@CommandoDude Lol! Where in the world you got the info that "Ozawa signaled Kurita" anything? His flagship was sunk on 25 October. Same time Kurita was fighting at Samar. How he could possibly reliably estimate the strength of US fleet?
And your point doesn't stand AT ALL! Destroyers at Samar had PLENTY OF AIR SUPPORT.
@ssmusic214 Not before Kurita engaged Taffy 3. And Ozawa's force wasn't even eliminated until after the Battle off Samar. So he could have. Also, they did not have plenty of air support, most of the planes launched during the battle were badly ill equip to engage surface targets, only some of the planes were equip with torpedoes and bombs, many simply strafed the decks of the Jap ships or tried to distract them. The real damage came from superior destroyer gunnery and torpedo attacks
@CommandoDude And how in the world Ozawa supposed to estimate strength of US fleet? By clairvoyance?
And After all the heroic action all that's left afloat of Taffy 3 was 1 damaged destroyer 2 destroyer escorts and 1 damaged Escort Carrier. To suggest that Kurita's 4 Battleships (including Yamato), 5 cruisers, 10 destroyers ran away because of that is totally preposterous. His concern was aircraft, not destroyers.
@ssmusic214 Intuition. Educated guess. He judges by what he's got. That's what he said, and Kurita believed him. It doesn't matter if you think it was a dumb call. In anycase, TF34 turned south after Taffy 3 radioed for help, and that was why Kurita withdrew, because if he lingered to rebuild his formation and finish off the Americans, TF34 could have intercepted him. It was the destroyers that delayed and harried him, and if it hadn't been for them, he would have reached Leyte.
@CommandoDude Lol!!! And where is the source of info? Any Admiral relaying his "Intuition" or "Educated guess" as reliable information would be dismissed and court martialed.
And Kurita had plenty of time to "rebuild formation" long before TF34 arrived from 100s of miles away.
Kurita ran because his fleet low on fuel was about to cut off from his only remaining escape rout of San Bernardino Strait and his remaining fire power wasn't enough to stop land invasion. Mission failed.
@ssmusic214 I'm sure they would, since you're SUCH an expert on naval admirality. You must OBVIOUSLY have been an officer aboard a warship before. (not). That's what he though, that's what he relayed. Late in the war, with a shortage of officers, they couldn't court martial someone, if he though he screwed up he'd have commited suicide. Kurita on the other hand, didn't know how much time he had. And frankly, where is the source of any of YOUR info? In anycase, you still haven't rebuffed my point
Where is YOUR source of Qzawa EVER sending such message?
All Kurita knew that after total loss of South force and his own heavy losses MISSION to stop land invasion FAILED.
Staying at Samar low on fuel with no chances of refueling his escape routes about to be cut off surrounded by OUTNUMBERING enemy on all sides meant TOTAL 100% LOSS of his ENTIRE FLEET.
Even if he could do lots damage in Lyete Gulf, it wouldn't stop US land invasion.
@ssmusic214 Which still. DOES NOT REBUFF MY POINT. Also, L, Klemen (1999-2000). "Rear-Admiral Takeo Kurita". Forgotten Campaign: The Dutch East Indies Campaign 1941-1942.

SMTERRY1960 1 month ago
the USS IOWA would of chewed them up and spit them out. and she would make lunch out of them
dfoster824 1 month ago
at that range, the Japanese Long Lance torpedo would destroy the Iowa.. end of game.. (the range of a type 93, Long Lance torpedo is 25 miles at 44 mph, longer than the range of the Iowa's main guns which is 23.6 miles)
dundonrl 1 month ago

Long Lances were awesome at night when the target steamed nice & straight ahead & torpedo wakes could not be seen, especially in close and set them at the higher speed.
uio890138 1 month ago
So Admiral Lee completed his mission, turn back the IJN bombard force & resupply convoy. He did not need to risk his BB's to sink every IJN ship. Could he have sunk more? Yes, but IJN ended pursuit & turned back due to the theat of the Cactus AF as daylight approached, Chasing a USS BB with operable rear 16 inch battery was not smart anyway. USS South Dakota took a lot of damage but nothing that threatened her survival. Thankfully for the IJN, she was poorly handled that night.
uio890138 1 month ago
2nd Naval Battle of Guadalcanal? USS Washingtom sank the IJN Kirishima (BB) & IJN Ayanami (DD) with gunfire that night & damaged several other IJN ships. USS South Dakota had 2 major electrical malfunctions that crippled her radar & fire control systems & she got off only 5 main battery salvos during the whole engagement. The IJN Long Lances only scored a few hits on the screening USS DD's, sinking 2. Several malfunctioned & a whole lot more missed, & they fired the bulk of them at the USS BB's.
uio890138 1 month ago
just for fun vid, nothing to get riled up about. Though I do believe a destroyer (aside from aircraft carriers) is a battleship's worst enemy, they may be small but they have the firepower to damage or cripple ANY ship in a fleet. That is why they were called the workhorse on any naval fleet.
ZinXlX 1 month ago
what people dont understand is that even though the torpedo offers high stoping power against large ships and even battleships. the destroyers couldint GET that close easly due to several factors im not qualifyed to talk about lol! but basicaly it would half to be a ballsy destroyer to want to get in range of a battleships main guns. thats a oneshot kill nomater where it strikes. that ship is going down.

admiraldma 1 month ago
20 Japanese destroyers each firing 6 or so torpedoes in a properly coordinated attack probably could have scored some dozens of torpedo hits( especially at night) on the Iowa, its difficult to see how she could have stayed afloat after that many hits..thats why battleships are escorted by destroyers and cruisers to prevent a massed attack by that many torpedo carrying enemy ships

@QuietThought "her captain wisely fought a running retreat to avoid torpedo attack and draw the Japanese away from the American battleship (USS South Dakota) they'd already crippled" SoDak was not crippled by IJN DD or torps. She was "criplled" by electrical issues
She was hit over 26 times (backlit by a burning destroyer at night is not good) but was not seriously damaged and sailed on her own power

onlythewise1 2 months ago
@onlythewise1 -- The Iowas were fine ships, the best of the dreadnoughts, but they were an obsolete concept. The only reason we needed them was because the Japanese had dreadnoughts of their own and there was the odd chance they might get close enough to our ships to use their guns. Beyond that, no one's dreadnoughts were cost effective, as you build a few hundred bombers and train pilots and crew for a lot less money and in a lot less time.

dafrandle 1 month ago
@dafrandle . . . Apparently not in this game. The Japanese gutted whole squadrons of Allied cruisers with destroyers in several battles. The Americans and Australians never quite caught on that the Japanese Long Lances had twice the range of their torpedoes.
QuietThought 1 month ago
@dafrandle . . . Scholar Richard Frank, trying to figure out how an American ship was sunk during a confused engagement off Guadalcanal, concluded that the ship could not have been struck by a Long Lance. This was because, in all his research, no one who had ever been on a ship struck by one ever had the least doubt about what had hit them. There was nothing else that hit remotely as hard.
QuietThought 1 month ago
@QuietThought Yeah, my grandfather served on the USS South Dakota, his job was to help load and clean the guns, and he was in a place in the ship where you wouldn't want to be hit by a torpedo at.

@QuietThought In that engagement USS Washington not just drew Japanese away from the American battleship (USS South Dakota) they'd already crippled, but also sunk IJN Battleship Kirishima.
ssmusic214 1 month ago
@QuietThought If he wanted a good example of a real Battleship vs. destroyers he should look at the desperate tactics of the battle of Leyte Gulf. When about 8 destroyers, 10 Destroyer escorts and 4 small escort Carriers fought to protect landing beaches against a desperate Japanese attack. If not he can look at the battle of the Jutland for even more organized destroyer torpedo attacks.
Vortex21x 1 month ago
@QuietThought Are you you sure you've got the right battle? The Sodak was crippled after it fought the Japanese battleship Kirishima. The Washington came and sank the Kirishima. My grandfather was a gunnery officer on board the Washington and he told me all about it. I think you may be getting your battles mixed up. The one with the destroyers took place later.
dreadnoughtjh 1 month ago
@QuietThought the Iowa class battleships can accurately engage 9 targets at ranges of over 20 miles, even the longest ranging japanese torpedo doesnt even have 1/10 that range, so there would be no way for the Fubuki to even get in torpedo range before being utterly decimated.

thebeeteam1gamercast 3 months ago
@thebeeteam1gamercast That is an extremely dillusional point of view.
They dishonoured Japan.

@TheBByamashiro Why were they, they both had the same gun armament, (6 x 5" guns) and Fubuki had an extra Torpedo tube (3 x Triple mount versus 2 x Quadruple mount for Asashio). Iowa had a radar fire control system when it went into action in 43'.With those 16 guns they could have easily stood off beyond the 5 inch gun rang of the destroyers and laid waste. If any had made it close enough to engage line of sight,Iowa had enough gunnery capabilities to handle it.

az90000100 3 months ago
20 destroyers vs a single battleship, the destroyers would likely win in the end. They'd take some heavy losses, but its not their guns that are the issue, its their torpedoes.
Once they got close they could bracket the BB with enough torps to put it out of action if not sink it outright. Thats assuming 50% losses just getting in close.
Saxxonknight 3 months ago
Japanese had the long lances torpedoes which could score hits at over 10 miles... it could be nasty
ewok40k 3 months ago
As depicted in this video, the iowa could deploy the 40 mm anti-aircraft batteries. Imagine being on the receiving end of each four gun AA firing 110 rounds per minute per gun. These weapons would sweep the decks clean of any IJN personnel.
MaxCruise73 3 months ago
For anyone who thinks Iowa could survive this. Google "Taffy 3" and realize how much threat a small group of destroyers can have on many big gun ships.
CommandoDude 3 months ago
@CommandoDude Hallooooo.......
Taffy 3 at the Battle of Samar had plenty of air support. And that's what fooled Admiral Kurita and made him turn around and run. He thought those destroyers are trying to lure him into a trap in Layte Gulf and main force attack about to come.
ssmusic214 3 months ago
@ssmusic214 He ran because in the confusion of battle he thought he was fighting cruisers, and his guns couldn't hit those destroyers at close range. Superior torpdeo tactics and smokescreening forced his ships to turn away from battle to avoid being hit.
CommandoDude 3 months ago
@CommandoDude Japs couldn't tell Cruiser from Destroyer at lose range? Lol...
Kurita suffered big losses 2 days before at the Battle of Sibuyan Sea, and Hours before entire Jap S Force walked into US trap in Surigao Strait and was completely wiped out. When he saw suicidal attack of US destroyers and ferocious air attacks, he thought that entire US Carrier fleet was nearby and he was about to walk into another US trap.
ssmusic214 3 months ago
@ssmusic214 He didn't THINK the US Carrier fleet was nearby, he thought the US carrier fleet was right there and UNDER his guns. He mistook several escort carriers for fleet carriers and pursued. The aggressive attacks of the destroyers broke up his formation and seriously damaged his cruisers, in conjunction with air attacks, making him think the enemy was stronger than it was. It had nothing to do with running from a trap, he did damage, he got a lot of damage, he withdrew.
CommandoDude 3 months ago
@CommandoDude You're not making any sense!
Kurita himself reported SINKING of at least 2 carriers. If he thought those were fleet carriers, did he ran away from the carriers HE ALREADY SUNK? (while he still had 4 battleships including Yamato)?
ssmusic214 3 months ago
@ssmusic214 He wasn't running away from the carriers. He thought he was fighting a much bigger force. The torp attacks split up his formation and damaged his cruisers so he withdrew before he though he'd get destroyed.
CommandoDude 3 months ago
@CommandoDude Hallooo... Kurita still had 4 Battleships (including Yamato), 5 cruisers, 10 destroyers. More than enough to decimate transport, supply and landing ships sitting in Leyte Gulf (which was his mission in the first place). It was Fleet Carriers he had to worry about (after what they did to him at Sibuyan Sea). He new the 2 Carriers he sunk were NOT FLEET CARRIERS.
Escort Carrier - 7800 tonns Fleet Carrier - 35 000 tonns. Not too hard to tell the difference for Admiral.
ssmusic214 3 months ago
@ssmusic214 Yes, it is hard to tell the difference, in the confusion of battle and with enemy destroyers laying down smokescreens. That's what he reported, two carriers sunk, not two escort carriers. And he couldn't risk approaching Leyte Gulf because he thought it was being guarded by Task Force 34, comprised of more battleships than he had. He didn't know that TF34 left.
CommandoDude 3 months ago
@CommandoDude You are not making ANY SENSE again!
To risk loss of entire fleet just to destroy Taffy 3 (of very little significance).
ssmusic214 3 months ago
@ssmusic214 Kurita was not aware however, that the 3rd fleet BS and CVs were out of range, and Ozawa signaled Kurita that he did not believe he was engaging the whole 3rd fleet. The severe damage to his cruisers made him believe the ships he was engaging were bigger than they were. Rather than risky taking even further loses he scrubbed the mission after he learned the units he was to link up with were sunk. So my point stands, a few destroyers rebuffed battleships and cruisers.
CommandoDude 3 months ago
@CommandoDude Lol! Where in the world you got the info that "Ozawa signaled Kurita" anything? His flagship was sunk on 25 October. Same time Kurita was fighting at Samar. How he could possibly reliably estimate the strength of US fleet?
And your point doesn't stand AT ALL! Destroyers at Samar had PLENTY OF AIR SUPPORT.
ssmusic214 3 months ago
@ssmusic214 Not before Kurita engaged Taffy 3. And Ozawa's force wasn't even eliminated until after the Battle off Samar. So he could have. Also, they did not have plenty of air support, most of the planes launched during the battle were badly ill equip to engage surface targets, only some of the planes were equip with torpedoes and bombs, many simply strafed the decks of the Jap ships or tried to distract them. The real damage came from superior destroyer gunnery and torpedo attacks
CommandoDude 3 months ago
@CommandoDude And how in the world Ozawa supposed to estimate strength of US fleet? By clairvoyance?
And After all the heroic action all that's left afloat of Taffy 3 was 1 damaged destroyer 2 destroyer escorts and 1 damaged Escort Carrier. To suggest that Kurita's 4 Battleships (including Yamato), 5 cruisers, 10 destroyers ran away because of that is totally preposterous. His concern was aircraft, not destroyers.
ssmusic214 3 months ago
@ssmusic214 Intuition. Educated guess. He judges by what he's got. That's what he said, and Kurita believed him. It doesn't matter if you think it was a dumb call. In anycase, TF34 turned south after Taffy 3 radioed for help, and that was why Kurita withdrew, because if he lingered to rebuild his formation and finish off the Americans, TF34 could have intercepted him. It was the destroyers that delayed and harried him, and if it hadn't been for them, he would have reached Leyte.
CommandoDude 3 months ago
@CommandoDude Lol!!! And where is the source of info? Any Admiral relaying his "Intuition" or "Educated guess" as reliable information would be dismissed and court martialed.
And Kurita had plenty of time to "rebuild formation" long before TF34 arrived from 100s of miles away.
Kurita ran because his fleet low on fuel was about to cut off from his only remaining escape rout of San Bernardino Strait and his remaining fire power wasn't enough to stop land invasion. Mission failed.
ssmusic214 3 months ago
@ssmusic214 I'm sure they would, since you're SUCH an expert on naval admirality. You must OBVIOUSLY have been an officer aboard a warship before. (not). That's what he though, that's what he relayed. Late in the war, with a shortage of officers, they couldn't court martial someone, if he though he screwed up he'd have commited suicide. Kurita on the other hand, didn't know how much time he had. And frankly, where is the source of any of YOUR info? In anycase, you still haven't rebuffed my point
CommandoDude 3 months ago
@CommandoDude Hallooo....
