That's not entirely true. Archduke Charles was not allowed to proceed with the battle, because the emperor feared he would become too popular (Napoleon had already offered Charles the crown, which he had declined). And the Austrian army was not destroyed, it was only forced to retreat and fought its way back to Znojmo where the peace treaty was signed. Napoleon was decisively weakened which was of cosequence on the way to Moscow.

Ur right lets count the wars : middle age : mostly french victories : Franco-Normans conquered England in 1066, Bouvines in 1214 was like winning a war, so u had to sign the Magna Carta, then the 100 years wars, first half on ur advantage mostly because burguignons were on ur side, second is ours so we trashed u out of France in 1450 = french win.

7 years wars (also called french and indian war) = english win.

American Revolutionnary war = french win. (remember USA isn't ur country !!! guess who's to thank)

Napoleonic wars = mostly english wins even those were France against all Europe (u would have done nothing without Prussiens at Waterloo).

Then both country fought side by side. So I'd say it's a draw. with French taking advantage for the middle ages wars.

@townsley2 the one clear advantage that the english has over france is that the countries that used to be in the english empire are still loyal to them, countries such as australia, new zealand, canada, naples, south africa, and india to a cirtain point, for example if england were to go top war with somene most of these countries would come to its aid, and you have to give the english credit, because after all they did have the biggest empire in the world at one point,(continued)

This is a fine movie of what was apparently an excellent series. The Austrian troops in white here are grenadiers with their bearskins. The regular "Austrian infantry wore Roman-style helmets, but the Hungarian already had shakos like the French.

tbh archduke charles is one hell of an underrated commander....he beat napoleon at aspern esseling and gave him a damn good fight at wagram .. i reckon he is the best commander napoleon faced even better than Arthur wellesley coz lets not forget that wellingtons center at waterloo was on the verge of collapse when the prussians arrived and intervened with their huge force and had blucher been held off by grouchy as napoleon had ordered wellington would have lost

Karl was one of the greatest generals in European history, but Habsburg generals are ignored by most English-speaking military historians. At Wagram, a little over a month later Karl and 120,000 Austrians held of the immortal Napoleon and his magnificent Grande Armee for two whole days, winning the admiration of the great genius thereafter. It actually took a good few days for Lanees to die. It was gangrene that took him as a result of his leg being shattered. Napoleon cried openly for some time after that. They had been close for many years.

@sk8nmetalpsycho Actually the battle was between the villages of Aspern and Essling. Both armies fought heroically under their great commanders, Napoleon and Archduke Karl von Habsburg. You, mein freund, are from sacred ground, consacrated by those many dead heroes. I wrote the Austrian Kanzler's office in 2008 urging a commemoration on European level of the 200th anniversary, but those mediocres only wanted talk of peace! What about honoring all those European heroes? Shame on them !!
