I always heard that Ray took 'I Got A Savior' and changed the lyrics for this song. Caused a huge stir in the gospel music community and an exodus from gospel vocal groups to secular singers like Sam Cooke and Johnny Taylor, etc, who wanted hit songs too.
Does anyone know if Ray Charles actually wrote this before the bluesmen performed it? Or did Ray Charles just put his name on it because no one had claimed it prior to his recordings? I have sought an answer to this question, and haven't come up with anything concrete.
