Portes is not responsible for the cross-cutting, since this version is the cut Lewis Jacobs made in the 1930s. He cut scenes he thought to be unncessary for the understanding of the plot. In the original edit of 1903 the action is shown from the inside and then again from the outside and was meant to be shown with commentary in the nickelodeons of that time.
