Utterly beautiful, magic song. Haven't heard it for so long - just seen the brilliant Eg White on the TV and it jolted my memory. Tears in my eyes listening to this - the man is a genius.
I've must have listened to this song for a million times, I bought the single cd back then. Best spend money ever :) Brilliant song even after all those years I still don't get about what they are singing... Makes it even more beautiful. It can be anything I want...
Their album bombed woefully when it should have been a winner and become a classic. This is such a striking, honest lyric and such a strong tune - and all the more powerful because it doesn't spell out just what she means with "If you tell me I'm an indian, then you're an Indian too". I'd hazard she means that you cannnot brand someone a loonie, a stupid or an outcast without demeaning yourself too, but that's all left to us.
I havn't heard this track for years, had the album so many times and gave it away to friends who 'needed' to hear it and now i don't own a copy. Does anyone know where i could find it? Their voices make me melt still! Please, i need it for myself this time.
The album 24 years of hunger was so unappreciated at the time. I think I picked up on it via Bob Harris's late night show on Radio in 1991. Much of it was recorded in Eg's kitchen apparently. I have since bought copies of it for friends because I rate it so highly. Eg's album 'Turn me on I'm a rocket man' had some great tracks on it too. Sadly all I have is aold cassette tape of it.
I've had this song popping up in myhead every so often for probably around 15 years, since it was playlisted on Cool Fm in Belfast. I thought actually at one point it may have been a figment of my imagination, but here it is!! coolio. I did actually search google for it 2 years ago and turned up nothing. Its Gold, theres just something about it. Anyone who can give me more backround on the band etc, then please click on me and post on my profile! And cheers euesperides 4 sharing
Eg and Alice had as far as i know only 1 album "24 years of hunger" - excellent album - eg went on to make an album "turn me on i'm a rocket man" which was equally brilliant, and as someone has already said he's now writing for will young
Brilliant album. They never did another but Eg went on to write 'Leave Right Now' for Will Young and 'Chasing Pavements' for Adelle. So not too shabby!
check out lyrics on..."It doesn't mean that much to me"

They performed this song live on prime-time chat show 'Wogan' on BBC TV around the song's release. I would so love to find that clip.

I love the back story to this.
Eg leaves Brother Beyond just as they become big, then in 90s releases songs "that might as well have never existed".
But finally talent always makes itself known as he is now the no1 songwtriter in the UK, maybe the world.
