With refernece to your : Yes, it sounds callous (NICE, not allowing treatment because its expensive). Isnt the word CALLOUS used to describe the american healthcare system by the NHS faithful, talk about hypocrite.
Sean Hannity completely represents the issue with NICE and the new breast cancer medicine - It decided that people were not going to get the medicine subsidised (Which is more than ANY medicine in the US gets) because it was not deemed to be of enough medical benefit and we'd be giving hundreds of millions of pounds to the pharma companies for a drug that might make life better for 6 months max. Yes, it sounds callous, but at least people who would otherwise not afford it get cancer treatment...
What a load of bollocks this guy speaks - The NHS has made people ILLER in 60 years? People in 1948 were in better health than 2008?
That part about the new GP contract introduce completely contradicts his claim about doctors leaving the NHS - the GPs got higher pay and didnt 'decide' to work less hours but the government offered that to them. This was because no one wanted to work as an NHS GP for the money as it wasnt worth it!
chill out is the only advice I can give you...you worry too much. Stop getting so irate. You are sadly mistaken if you think the actions of you will change a thing.

Daniel Hannan is fast becoming an icon within the Conservative party, lets hope that we will see him in office next year when David Cameron will inevitably be elected.
I think Mr Make Do must want all of us to make do with this soviet health care system we have...maybe he's talking about some other country because I can think of many names to call this system but "Amazing" wouldn't be one of them...and I'm sure I am not alone(by far...)
This is such a pile of bullcrap. The NHS is an amazing instituton. It's not perfect and it needs to be run more effectively, true but it's an essesential part of the healthcare system in this country. I've only ever had great service from the NHS.
Wow, you've had great service in the number of unnamed cases you've required service? Well then, the system must be perfect... Removing the NHS won't stop us from introducing better private healthcare systems which will be more efficient, and of a higher quality.
Well I've been many times and although some of the doctors and nurses are nice well meaning people I have been consistently (and one occasion appalled) disappointed by the waiting, the run down nature of the buildings and the evident bludgeoning bureaucracy. As for "it needs to be run more effectively" this is what every socialist always says about everything. It never ever works. ever.
If Dan Hannan were to make those comments about the NHS on TV in the UK he would be shot to pieces. Nearly everyone in the UK has relied/will rely upon the NHS in their lifetime. It's not been a '60 year failure' in the slighest. Socialised healthcare in the UK has been a model the world has followed and one which puts the needs of the people first. Not the greed of investors.
Hannan's up for election again in June. I doubt he'd make a comment like this in the run up...
I certainly hope we dont adopt your NHS here in the U.S. every study I've read, and the people I've spoken too says how horrible it is. How can a country like the UK be ranked so low in quality of health care on cases like heart disease? I will move the hell out of here before I have to subsidize that shitty system.
Very different to what I've seen, heard and experienced. The NHS does an oustanding job in caring for millions of people every year and I for one wouldn't have it carved up and destroyed by privatisation.
Your missing the point. The NHS is the 2nd biggest employer in the world, yet people have to wait months for operations. There are too many beaucrats telling doctors who to operate on. Also, spending has tripled on the NHS in the last ten years, yet for the first time in its history, its in debt. Privatisation would make alot more efficient and there woulnt be such an explosion of MRSA.
People said the same things when the NHS was first created. Stop doom-mongering. It's better than the alternative. What's preferable: that there are people who have to wait a few months, or that there are people who can't afford it/quality of healthcare is solely dependent on your ability to pay? It would become more efficient, but the current problems are vastly overstated. Hopefully the Conservatives will divert funds back from bureaucracy, and towards healthcare.
Do you even pay attention to your own news? I've read where health clinics are closing down, and that the people who work at some of these places are over-whelmed by the work load. California has hospitals closing too. When the money runs out, you can NOT get people to work for you. Have you noticed that your hospital has many more foreigners as doctors and nurses? It is happening in the USA... because the price of being a doctor is NOT worth it anymore! American Doctors are quitting here!
And they shall quit at an exponential rate should all of our checks come from the US government.
Lets see how many of the yea-sayers to nationalized healthcare would feel the same should their boss come in and tell them that they only pay half-wage for the same piece they make but for a different company. Or charge them to certify that they are who they are, OR to certify that they are 'up to date'. This list goes on. I forsee US doctors becoming unionized. You will all be screwed then.
Personally, I would like to see a minimum on the NHS's budget, so that ministers cannot cut the budget (and thus cut taxes) in order to gain political capital.
Well, really, you're the only rich country which dosen't have nationalized healthcare, so, you might have trouble trying to find a good place to go. I say, just don't let it happen in the first place.
Hey Daniel, conservatives here aren't the same as the Brit's. They thru away the last 8 years, and put our country 5 trillion further in debt. They deregulated banking and caused this worldwide meltdown. You knocked your socialized healthcare on Sean Hannity, but 50 million Americans without it will die if they get cancer or any other life threatening decease. I agree with a lot you say and we appreciate your love of our constitution, but conservatism here means abandoning the common man.
clearly you need to figure out why were are in this meltdown to begin with.
look up "easescredit snopes" and read the NYtimes article from 1999. Of course we were assured that it was all fine and dandy while Mr. Frank was getting his loving on with his boyfriend.
Bullshit - Your president Clinton , deregulated the banking industry in '99 with the repeal of the Glass/Steagall act which in turn allowed banks to venture into any risk. President Bush fought hard in 2003 and 2004 to reform the banking industry and Barney Frank and Chris Dodd fought Bush tooth and nail to protect their gravy train. I bet the common man really appreciates Obama's new 62 cent a pack tax on cigarettes, get a clue uc2it, uhavelostit.
No it was the republicans who forced Clinton to repeal Glass Stegall. Look at the votes in the congress and senate it was republicans who forced clinton to do the deal. It was the democrats who broughy in the Glass Stegall in the first place. President Bush wanted to makes the banking industry even less regulated.
zzxzqwq, Clinton didn't veto it. And in a recent interview, he said signing Gramm-Leach-Bliley (the bill that repealed parts of Glass-Steagall) into law was a good thing.
Gramm and Leach were both republicans. The first voted on the bill saw 53 republicans and 1 democrat voted for it. It was the republicans who forced it through they controlled both houses. Plus it is a right wing idea to have lax regulation, regardless of if it is Clinton or the Gingrich types did it. Plus reagan brought back derivatives.
zzxzqwq, Are we talking about the same bill? In a previous comment, I posted the 'Yes' votes of Democrats on the bill. 38 out of 45 Democrats voted yes in the Senate, and 155 out of 206 in the House voted yes. By no means did the Republicans "force it through" Congress.
Taken from wikipedia. "On May 6, 1999, the Senate passed the bills by a 54-44 vote along party lines (53 Republicans and one Democrat in favor; 44 Democrats opposed)."
whether you've been helped by the NHS (most everybody has but we've paid for it, and the service would have been better if we'd had the chance to spend our taxes ourselves on the healthcare we wanted) is irrelevant. If you're a libertarian you can't support a healthcare system founded on violence.

I cannot believe that after everything that has happened this guy is still calling for less regulation...
His portrayal of British health care is so obviously motivated by politics. He doesn't even know how it started... it started during the blitz. It was decided that civilians injured in the war should be treated under similar conditions to soldiers.
Is he really saying that Britain is a socialist country??? This guy is a moron.

Hannan should be a paid lobbyist for the insurance companies where he can pedal his distortionist free market jargon. He beleives in social welfare for financial institutions via loose monetary policy and starts screaming socialism the moment fiscal policy attempts to address this non-free marjket imbalance.
If hannan beleives in the gold standard and 100% reserve banking, then i will take him seriously. Until then, he is just a paid propagandist for the financial industry,

from state funded scientific councils. Tax payers foot the bill of medical innovation and hannan expects the fruits of these research to be privatized. Typical. Risk is socialized while profits are privatized under the perfidious guise of the free markets. Improved medical trestment will not result from a competition between providers leading to deflationary pressures hence cheaper health. That will not occur with the central bank cutting rates so that all sectors avoid deflation.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Privatizing healthcare and expecting market forces to determine the price of medical treatment is foolish in an inflationary enviroment of fiat currency and fractional reserve banking. Like in all other sectors, the invisible inflation tax will gravitate all of the profits to the equity holders, stock holders and high powered money bags. Hannan doesnt beleive in the free markets. He tactfully ingnores the fact that all of the advances and innovation in science, medicine and technology have been
The NHS (National Health Service) here in Britain is not the disaster being painted here. It has survived so long because it is system that works.I admire Mr. Hannan for his refreshing stance, but that's hardly a compliment given the state of politics these days. #His party was in power the vast majority of those 60 years, and they not only supported it, they made it into the beast it is today. Besides it's not the NHS that's the problem - this crisis was caused by mismanagement from all gov's.
Could you ever have a better example than these two of the "I,m alright Jack Brigade?

Hannan said nothing out of line in the interview.
Yes, Hannity is a douche, but don't hate on Hannan based on association. He got invited to go on a show, and he accepted it.

Versus every other channel who lied Obama into power? Bush and Obama are on different sides of the same statist coin.

Hah. Awesome.

You can tell Hannity was uncomfortable saying that during the intro. He didn't even finish saying "order."

PM Hannan

Hannity is not an ally of conservatism. By saying that he is a conservative he has done actual conservatism lots of harm.

Hannan must not start playing sycophant to Hannity because he has him on the show.
I am a British libertarian, however, the NHS has, in the past and present, helped me and my family on many occasions.
We have the system and being the smallish state we can just about maintain it. The US cannot.
andrepp1701 2 years ago
whether you've been helped by the NHS (most everybody has but we've paid for it, and the service would have been better if we'd had the chance to spend our taxes ourselves on the healthcare we wanted) is irrelevant.

Without a gold standard (100 percent reserve) private health doesn't work.

You have hit the nail on head here with your criticisms of a nationalised healthcare system.
