This almost sounds like a Beatles cover, with Paul and John slightly tipsy and slurring their words (lol). Still, sounds very Beatley to me, which makes a pretty good cover.
I'm more familiar with Aerosmith's version of this song from their debut album. The Sonics are legendary, they influenced a lot of 70s and 80s rock bands.
My dad used to see these guys, The Fabulous Wailers, The Kingsman, and Paul Revere in Portland, when he was in high school. He used to show me the old car club places and dance halls around the Willamette River. I will have to do the same thing with my kids, they'll grow up thinking grunge is for old people!! : (
You my friend are a geezer like me. I'm 56. I've got a lot of that old stuff on vinyl myself. These guys sound a lot like those old stones. I'll need to hear more of their music but what I hear here is Pretty good.
I don't know about better. For vintage sound like this 1964 Stones google "Mona", and "Little Red Rooster", A really good collection is Rolling Stones Hot Rocks Vol. I
I discovered the sonics about two months ago, maybe less. I'm amazed, that's rock n roll.. fuckin great, any garage bands like this you guys could show me?
@bernardobrj - awesome dude these boys used to put ice picks through there amps to get max distortion.....in the sixties - the King Beez for a start, try and get your hands on a compilation series called Garage Punk Unknowns, particularly vol. 1 and 2. I discovered this music trailing back the roots of tunes I love about 15 years ago and was super stoked. Hope you enjoy!
@jaqua524 I'd had a few at the time of writing. Can't really say if they covered it before the Stones, they didn't record it before the Stones. Rufus Thomas released the original in December 63, Stones 64, Sonics 65. Peace out
This song seems to be popping up everywhere for me. I first heard it by Green Day, then I decided to give the original Seattle band a listen, and they did it. I like this more...
I recall hearing some of these old Seattle bands in large Eagles clubs and places with excessive natural echo....Most all the songs were basic 1 4 5 chord progessions much like this song.
It sounded more like a train coming through the building. I just could not connect with it. These STUDIO recordings are a plus today. Too bad you missed the big echo halls of the era, Girls were pretty back then but, they passed me by. I was too young for em or too ugly? I caught on with em later..
You had to be there at the places they played. That was when the audience (boys and girls) was actually dancing on the gym floor or in the ballroom. It was a gas listening to their songs in those big halls. Big amps, electrovoice PA system with horns, drummer up on a platform wailing on the bass and pounding the snare. It was AWESOME!
His vocal sounds very Jagger influenced on this song. The Stones had done Walking the Dog on thier debut album the year before. Cracking stuff tho. Love that dirty garage sound!

The Sonics and The Kinks, I would survive emotional angst through this alone.

that's right, Dai! All of the various aesthetic and muscial styles called "punk" come from one single not-so-esoteric garage band!
A+

The Sonics were a great band and their music stands the test of time. Some of the purest rock & roll ever recorded.
