They are not kept in natural conditions, but are happy, healthy, extremely playful, and very well loved by the staff who try very hard to keep them mentally stimulated. Until zoos started teaching people about them, not many Americans even knew what they were or cared about the fate of bonobos in the wild. Now zoos host fund raisers and large donations are made to bonobo conservation in the Congo where babies whose moms were killed for bushmeat can be rehabilitated and re-released.

@LTstudios - not sure what the "right" answer is as the congo goes in & out of civil war so their not safe there from hunting & being sold as bushmeat . But it is another example how humans totally disrespect their planet by over fishing tuna or whales or just about everything on this planet .

Bonobos are otherwise known as Pygmy, Dwarf or Gracile Chimpanzees. Their high level of intelligence has been noted at London Zoo, where the bonobos there were given a colour TV to keep them entertained, as where their chimpanzee relatives. It was noted that the bonobos seemed to be trying to work out what the shapes on-screen were doing, rather than just being distracted by the movement like the chimps.
