ustad zakir hussain is just great !!

  • two masterminds together

  • God's hands. Now you know what they look like.

  • Oh this is GLORIOUS! Such articulation! And the older gentlemen, Ravi Shankar?, he just seems so proud as he looks on. Did Mr. Shankar train him? For it almost seemed like a master watching his aprentice come into his own. Very entertaining. I wonder if I could see a performance live? Does anyone know? Could you tell me please?!

  • It is Ravi Shankar. I've got a Ravi album with this track on it. So awesome that they could collaborate. Wonderful isn't it!

  • No...Pandit Ji did not train him. But, Pandit Ravi Ji, did see Zakir blossom into Ustad Zakir Hussain.

  • @Blackthorne369

u r right. so entertaining. ravi played with his father and now with his son. but still a bond of passions. :)

  • It's not Aashish Khan. His name is Partho Sarathi, a student of Shankarji himself.

  • who is the guy at 0:09??

  • that is Ashish Khan the Sarod Player

  • this is amazing!

  • how can u even compare the two? rimpa shiv is absolutely no where near knowledge of rhythm, and musicality that zakir hussain. Zakir hussain is on a totally different level than rimpa shiv.

  • Comment removed

  • I did NOT compare Zakir and Rimpa did I?

  • I just saw him perform this LIVE and this honestly does no justice to it. Seeing it in person is the only way to see how truly unbelievable this is.

  • I have this on DVD and the whole thing is MAGICAL!!!

  • He is truely a magician.

  • awesome..

  • 139th time of listening to this clip - that's >16 hours of bliss!

How was the concert? Would have loved to be there but now live the opposite side of country. Saw Shankar perform at the Barbican 5 years or so ago.

Still wish I knew where this recording was made and how to get hold of the whole concert.

    Peace and love.

  • it's ravi shankar : the concert for world peace. it's out on dvd

  • The concert was amazing worth every penny. This was recorded at the royal albert hall in London in 1993 i think.

  • This is by far my favourite ever recording by any artist.

It sounds modern - like an intelligent drum & bass track played by hand than a classical performance.

The backing seems western & reminds of a grandfather clock, counting down four quick seconds at a time. The tabla accentuates, with a discernable undulation even at the fastest speeds that emphasises each pendulum swing!

Lol at 5:45 when he casually chalks his hand in a fraction of a second in the midst of drumming chaos ; )

  • nice vidio an so queit zakir sir nice laykaari

  • Absolutely just brilliant!!

  • Ditto!

  • Amazing sound. Does anyone know what a phyta thekha is? I'm not sure that's how you spell it. Amazing performance. He has such a light and beautiful style of playing.

  • excellent

  • no. he's still alive and healthy...he just doesn't travel very long distances...he's in his 80's...

  • what's the difference between "ustad" and "pandit." are these ranks or just random titles or what?

  • Ustad or Pandit is a name given to a perfomer who has mastered that particular art. Ustad is giving to a muslim or sikh performer and pandit is given to hindu or bengali performers.

  • Well they are pretty much the same.

if the guru is Hindu, he is a "Pandit" but if he i a Muslim, he's a "Ustad".

These titles are named after a person has spent almost his entire life practicing, learning and performing - however it is the experience which is important. These are not official names, but names which spread around.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Also, just would like to add at 2:26 he touches his left ear, this is to show respect to Ut. Ahmed Jan Thirakwa, whose teka ZakirJi is playing.

    How humble is that? Very!

  • not theka but qaida.

  • truly amazing

  • This just excellent. No words can really match this performance...but as we are no gods we have to use the words lol

  • omg. wow

  • oh wow --applause--

  • wah ustad...one of the greatest musicians of all times...thank you for posting this..god bless u.!!

  • thank you for posting this i appreciate it alot

  • wah
